  1. UNT had the opportunnity to get the current A&M and UTEP coaches but selected JJ!! Those schools currently had the talent where JJ did not.  Take a look what Trilli did for the team.  (1) he let go everyone that Jankovich had and brought in a whole new squad!! (2) caused disention on the team where players left UNT to go to other schools.

What did JJ have when he got here??? well.....not much!!

What did the A&M coach and UTEP coaches have when they got to their new venues????  come on man, think.  I really do not think that any coach in JJ's position can come into a program that has been decimated and begin a winning program with a reputation of not having a winning program for years.

First of all, it is the current A & M coach, who was once at UTEP......that we had the chance to get. (Not the current A & M and UTEP coaches).

Secondly, A & M and UTEP weren't stacked with talented players when Gillespie got to either place.

Thirdly, do you honestly think SBC basketball and Big 12 are comparable? I mean, it would seem to me, that it would be a heckuva lot easier to win in the SBC, than in the Big 12. Gillespie has done more in his first year in Aggieland, than JJ has done in four years at UNT.

And one more time....so maybe it will sink through....if the program was so decimated when Trilli left......how come JJ's best record was his first year at UNT? Explain that one.

And when you've got time, you and GK Smith need to get together. Y'all have a lot in common.

  2. I voted for Other. And, I mean this in all seriousness.....

My MVPs for the 2004-2005 season: The guys who founded The Pit Crew.

I think they have started a great, new spirit group.....which hopefully will be around for many years.

If I had to pick a player, I'd go with Oh! J. Simpson.

  3. There are a lot of great b-ball players who leave the state.....but there are also a lot of great ones who stay.

Just proof that it's not that bad of a year for college basketball in Texas.....these are some of the records of some of our other Texas universities:

    Texas Tech 18-9

    Texas 20-9

    A & M 19-8

    TCU 19-12

    Houston 18-13

    Sam Houston State 18-11

    Lamar 18-10

    Rice 18-10

    UTEP 24-7

And many of those schools have conference tournament games left.....thus increasing their chances of getting to 20-win seasons.

So, Texas will be well represented in both the NCAA and NIT.........

  4. Truth hurts. I made my point.

All Majors. The only 2 Texas teams you listed are the only ones that can recruit well in basketball and football (for UT, include baseball).

Correct. All mid-majors, only one from Texas and not a school that gets national attention week in and week out in football, basketball or baseball.

NT fights a big uphill battle in recruiting in football and (more so) basketball. Football recruiting has improved a lot over the last several years. NT was lucky to recruit in the DFW area only. Dickey has been able to expand it to state wide and include JUCO recruits from surrounding states.

Basketball recruiting in Texas is much harder. A top flight BB recruit will look at primere out of state schools to play on TV, expand their game, play for an National Championship, and if good enough, make it to the next level.

Maybe Baylor Women are better than I thought. Overall, still a #3 behind Texas and Tech.

GK.....has anyone talked to you about "assisted living"?

    It's time.

  5. You know what thunder sticks are, IMHO?

They're the new "Wave". Something for fans who aren't really into the game to amuse themselves with. (kind of like morons who still start the "Wave" at sporting events.

I guess we never have enough students for this.......but I love when student sections do that thing where they all bounce up and down at the same time. (Is that called anything?)

  6. I posted this on another thread also.

The sad truth about basketball in Texas.

Unfortunately, Texas is a FOOTBALL state. Basketball gets very little attention by comparison. If you are a quality basketball player in Texas and you want to play on a top flight college team, you have 3 choices:

    Texas

    Texas Tech

    going out of state

This goes for Women also. Baylor is a fluk this year.

i.e. Last year UNT played Indiana here. Indiana has a freshman (at the time) from The Colony. He kicked out butts.

This season, I forget which team from out of state, but there was another Colony product that came in here and stuck it to UNT.

I am not suggesting that we throw up our hands and give up. Very few colleges, especially mid majors, can have quality programs in 2 major sports.

Trust me on this, that post wasn't worth being posted ONCE, much less TWICE.

  7. How many non-Division 1 programs has North Texas played in each of those 4 seasons?

What is the record against Divison 1 programs? Those are the only games that are factored into the NCAA equation for determining team strength.

Jeff....I looked that up the other day. When you take away his 8 wins over NAIA and Division II schools, JJ"s record is a sparkling:

    41-64

And if you break down those 41 wins......not a lot of Division I "big names" on that list either.

  8. JONESBORO, Ark. — For one program, it was a first. For another, it marked the first time in a while.

The University of North Texas women’s track and field squad won its first Sun Belt Conference Indoor title on Monday, as the Mean Green took top honors at the Aéropostale Sun Belt Championships at Arkansas State’s Convocation Center.

South Alabama, meanwhile, took first place on the men’s side, marking the Jaguars’ first indoor title since 1994.

The two programs took home a lot of hardware. NT’s Rhonda Williams was one of three standouts selected as Outstanding Field Performers. Florida International’s Elisa Dieme-Erlich and Western Kentucky’s Courtney Wood joined Williams in the field honors.

Mean Green head coach Rick Watkins, meanwhile, was named the Women’s Coach of the Year.

North Texas narrowly defeated Western Kentucky. The Mean Green tallied 111 points, compared to 108 ½ by the Hilltoppers. Middle Tennessee, the four-time defending champion, finished third.

On the men’s side, USA head coach Lee Evans was named Coach of the Year, while Tonny Okello was named Outstanding Track Performer after he earned top scoring honors.

The Jaguars recorded 138 points, 14 ahead of second-place Arkansas State. Four-time defending indoor champion Middle Tennessee finished third.

Complete results from Sunday action can be found on the Sun Belt Conference website at http://indoortrack.sunbeltsports.org/x/article/3652.

  9. I have to side with our younger fans on this one. All they are trying to do, is to encourage fans to attend home basketball games. Is that such a sin? I do realize that on this board, any encouragement of fans to get involved (attend games of different sports, join the Mean Green Club) is looked upon as being judgemental. Only at North Texas, would that be judgemental.

If you don't like basketball.....that's fine. But then, don't post your thoughts on a basketball board discussing basketball issues. You should leave those discussions to those who do love the game.

Man cannot live on bread alone. And this particular man, needs more than football.

  10. The basketball support at this school is a joke, and it is no wonder that CUSA passed us by.  We CANNOT blame SMU or politics for this, all we can do is look in the mirror as a collective fan base and know the real reason.  We have a long way to go in football, and longer in basketball.  The shame of it is, everyone thinks a stadium that has not been built or funded will answer the former and nobody gives a crap about the latter.

    Great post.

  11. Actually, they called timeout before inbounding the ball. As far as a double-team goes, I'm not sure, but Isaac Hines was in his face when he shot the ball.

What I meant Gang Green....is that they were out of timeouts (after having called that one before the inbounds play). And because of that, if we had guarded their players well, to where he didn't have anyone open to throw to......the player inbounding the ball couldn't call a timeout.

Sorry if I wasn't clear what I meant there.

  12. One other thing about the inbounds situation.....they had to get it in....because they were out of timeouts.

Also, if you're not going to guard the inbounds....you would think two guys would have been on Winchester (who had 33 before hitting the winning 3 pointer). Their other best scorer had fouled out (Lee--that great freshman of theirs).

Did we have two guys on Winchester....when he hit that shot???

  13. The trouble is....since it looks like we'll finish 4th or worse in the Western Division....we won't get a bye in the first round of the SBC tournament.

    That's a killer.

We'd have to win four games to win the tournament instead of three. That extra game can kill you when you've played one more than your opponent in the semi-finals or finals of the tournament. Your guys are just too tired to win at that point.

  14. The final was 93-92, btw.

I listened to the game...I guess maybe you got it on televison back in Bowling Green...right GE &H?

I had no idea that we didn't guard the inbounds pass. For those who don't know, we go up 92-90 with 3 seconds left.....and let them get the ball in (unguarded I now gather).....to a point guard who gets the ball to their hottest player (the guy had 33 b-4 the final three).

You are definitely right....that inbounds pass needed to be guarded.

  15. Unbelievable. Our team played great tonight, but just couldn't hang on, losing on a three point shot at the buzzer....93-92.

We lead throughout the contest.....were up by 25 in the 1st half.....lead 43-36 at the half. Our guys extended the lead to double digits in the 2nd half.....but WKU came back and won by 1.

Mean Green now 11-11, 4-7 in conference.

  16. This really looks like the same argument I hear in the football forums:

    Why is the attendance low?

Guys, it all takes time, and usually much more of it than we'd prefer.  Some of you older folks will recognize that sometimes, in life, the only way you can make something happen is 1) do what you can do, and 2) wait.  Some of us younger guys are understandably a bit confused and frustrated when, in the 'quick fix' world that has been presented to us, nothing we do seems to have any bit of effect.

To get where we all want to go is not something that can be accomplished overnight.  You have to realize that, in the perfect situation, with flawless seasons filled with memorable moments, low ticket prices, ubiquitous and creative advertising, the time it takes for us to get to packed Super Pits will still be measured in years, not in months or weeks.

One of the most frustrating things I've learned in life so far is that sometimes you can do everything right, with all the right intentions, and still not end up getting what you want.

So what happens when, as humans, we screw something up?  Let's say we drop a "gimme" game at home.  Let's say we lose our star player.  Let's say that we end up with a losing record.  That "best case" timeframe of a couple of years might tack on a few more.

    But there is hope here.

My mother, who works at a high school in Carrollton, hears more and more non-music kids "thinking about UNT," and not just because they couldn't get into UT or A&M.  Our business school, our Emergency Management program, our Engineering program; all of them are starting to get noticed.  We are starting to get kids here who aren't here for a "community college" experience, who expect an education and college experience commensurate to Tech, A&M, or UT.

I was met with a little shock when I asked a new student from Arkansas what he was studying.  He told me that he had heard about our college of education and wanted to get a degree from here.  Usually, kids from further away than Texas are either here for the music school or are exchange students.  To get non- music undergraduates here from out of state, solely on our University's reputation, is HUGE.

What does this have to do with basketball?  Rhetorically, have any of you been to games in the past five years?  Have you noticed the change in attendance/volume of the crowd?  I'm the who went to as many basketball games in the first week of this year's season than I did in four undergraduate years, and I was shocked to see literally thousands of people in attendance.  I guarantee you, none of the people in the stands are "community college" minded guys.  They aren't here because they couldn't afford someplace else, or because UNT was the only place they could get in.  It is hard to be proud of a place you were more or less FORCED to go.  These people are at UNT because they had a choice, and picked here.

The length of time between now and what we want is contingent upon too many factors for me to follow, much less understand.  Wins, losses, moments, down to individual experiences, there are FAR too many variables.  No one can predict when it will come, but I can tell you when it won't.

It won't happen this year.  It won't happen next year.  It probably won't happen the year after that.  Until we cycle out every person who wants the old UNT paradigm, assuming that's even possible, we'll be stuck with unsatisfactory attendance.  And what happens then, when we actually get the attendance we're looking for?  There will be something else that we want.

If you keep looking at tomorrow, you'll entirely miss today.  Wishing for better things is admirable, normal, and, well, human.  But you might do well to enjoy how far we have come, because we certainly could do worse.

Thanks for the sermon. When is the offering going to be taken up?

  17. If being stuck with Trilli's players is such an awful thing....how come JJ's best year (yet) was his first team? (which had all Trilli players except for Jermaine Green and Lee Green, I think).

This team got me excited early in the year. The wins over Lamar and UNC-W at home....were quality wins. But, in conference we have been abysmal. We are 2-5 in our last 7 games.

Looking ahead....I see us losing to ULL (road game); Denver and WKU (home games).

We'll probably beat S Bama, UNO and UT-Peanut Butter. (all at home)

If that's the case....we'd be 14-13 for the regular season, a season in which we had 15 home games, and a lot of cupcakes on the schedule. Also, if that scenario works out, we'd finish 6-9 in conference. I don't know if 6-9 in the West Division will be enough for us to be the #3 seed or not. If we're not the #3 seed, we'd have to win 4 games to win the SBC tourney, not three.

Anyway, this team can turn it around. Beating ULL, WKU or Denver would be big starts toward that. I hope we can do it.

    GMG!

  18. I wasn't able to listen either..but the box score does appear to tell the tale.  Did the team just look uninspired?

It was an away game, so I can't tell how they looked.

But listening to it....it sure seemed like they were uninspired. I mean, when you have turnovers on 4 of your first 5 possessions........doesn't seem to me like the kids' heads are in the game. Does it to you?

We didn't get a field goal until the 11:20 mark of the first half.

Once we got down 19-1.....we did make a run and brought it back to 19-12......but then they went on another run.......and they toyed with us the rest of the game (lead anywhere from 13-20 or so).

  19. Down 19-1 at the start of the game. Does JJ know how to get a team ready to start a game? It doesn't seem like it.

Tons of turnovers. 4 of our first 5 possessions we had turnovers.

This is a team that isn't going anywhere right now.

    Final: MT 79 UNT 64

And trust me on this....it wasn't as close as the final score indicates.

  20. I love the Astros as much as I do the Rangers (because the Stros were around when I was a kid; Rangers didn't get here 'til I was 15).

So, last year was a blast (finally seeing a Texas team win a baseball playoff series).

Chris Burke will be a key to this team's success. He hit well at AAA (.315, 16 homers; also 37 SBs).

A guy that I would love to see make the Astros team: speedy center fielder Willy Tavares. I'd love to see Tavares, Biggio and Lane in the OF, until Lance comes back. Starting Orlando Palmeiro does nothing for me.

I agree that the Cardinals are the team to beat.

My longshot darkhorse for the NL Central: Milwaukee. Doug Melvin is a genius at finding good talent cheaply (i.e. Doug Davis and Danny Kolb, both of whom should still be with the Rangers). Also, Milwaukee has maybe the most talent ready to blossom out of the minor leagues....of any team in baseball).

  21. Actually, I figured the Blue Raiders might even be bigger favorites than that (12 or so).

It'll be really tough for us to win up there tonight. But, I feel that our team, if they put it together can beat any other team in the league. Conversely though, I feel on nights where we don't have it going on, we could lose to any other team in the league.

A win tonight would be a huge upset.
