  1. I think you should reserve judgement until after the Combine. Cobbs has ability as a special teams player, which many running backs do not. Although Cobbs is not particularly large, he has a way of running through defenders that I think NFL scouts and coaches will be able to appreciate.

In addition, Cobbs's National Rushing Title does carry a bit of weight, as well as his solid performance despite playing on a bad team this past year. It will also depend on how many teams need running backs and special teams players. Of course, after the kicking year this year, I think Bazaldua has an excellent shot.

Don't thiink Cobb was invited to the combine. I think he will make an NFL roster however.

  2. Here's the breakdown of the recruiting class so far. Including mid-term JUCO's:

    QB 1

    RB 1

    OL 3

    TE 3

    DE 2

    DT 5

    Ath 1

    Saftey 2

    18 total commits

I'm guessing that there are around 4 more offers that are out there.

You can note the atheticism of some TE/DE recruits as they played both postions.

With DD siging so many DT prospects you would have to hope that some would be able to step up and contribute as true freshman. Several of them already have the size that is so desperately needed up front.

Remember the four Mid-term JC signees count on last years scholarship count not this years. So really ony 14 committments would count toward the 2006 limit.

  3. Plum, I did not know Wayne's father. If you did meet Wayne you would more than likely remember him, while in high school, he and a couple of buddies went out hunting and while crossing a barbed wire fence his gun discharged and blew off most of his nose. His wife's name was Alice and his kids are Scarlett and J. Rhett.Wayne was Quanah's great grandson.

buff64, thanks for that most interesting (at least to me) info on the late Wayne J. Parker.  Do you know by chance what his dad's name was?  I've met one of Quanah's great-great grandsons on a couple occasions over near the Fort Worth Stockyards at an Indian pow-wow and found him to be very cordial.  We had some most interesting discussions to say the least.

    ..................................................................................................

COWBOYS VS INDIANS @ FORT PARKER IN THE EARLY 1950's.............

My late mother told me this story for years since I was about 3 years old when this event took place but we always sorta' got a little laugh out of it thru the years.

Anyway, all families who were direct descendents of those inside Fort Parker when it was attacked by about 500 Commanches and Kiowa Indians were going to have a "first ever"  reunion/covered dish picnic (to be held) inside the fort back in the early 1950's.  In fact, the Indian Parkers (since there were also the Caucasian Parkers in the original story) had also been (graciously) invited to this reunion although none of their descendents (of Chief Peta Nocona and his white wife, Cynthia Ann Parker) would have been inside the fort at the May 19, 1836, massacre since it was their ancestors who were doing all the massacre-ing. sad.gif

Anyway, for all those who would be able to come inside the fort for this historic reunion/picnic there were special name tags sent in advance to all elgible families.  Well, long story short, one of our Plummer relatives forgot to bring all our name tags on the day of the reunion so when our group enterered the old restored fort (w/o name tags on) and put our dishes on the tables and got in line to fill our plates, many of the Indian Parkers became most visibly miffed thinking we were breaking in on "their" party!  LOL!  (Nevermind that their group had not only kidnapped Cynthia Ann but also my great-great grandpa's wife, Rachel Plummer and their son (& my namesake) James, back on May 19, 1836).

Well, some of our good white Parker friends assured the Indian Parkers that we were (indeed) a part of the original 1836 event and were eventually able to settle the Indian Parkers down over all this (who I presume were almost ready to go on the warpath all over again over some more blue eyed devils being on "their" land).wink.gif

So (yes in deedy) there was almost a 2'nd Massacre at Fort Parker back in the early 1950's.smile.gif  My late mother could tell this story much better than I have posted it, but some of you bothering to read this at all are probably just glad that you have actually read one of my post in less than 5 minutes!

    gmg!

  4. shaft, we finally agree on something, my posts are ridiculously long epistles.  I think the last one (now on page 2 of GMG.com on MG61's  thread titled " Should Cajun official fly to Denton" ) was my longest post ever on GMG.com. Took me 3 days to correct all the spelling.  It has from my understanding also pissed off a few (what else is new with that?) that I do seem to express my gut feelings about a 4 decade long passion of mine--mainly Mean Green football.  Guess they'll get over all that----I always do.

And MG11/MG61/Deep Green/SilverE, thanks for the concern.

AND................Ol' Chief Quanah Parker's ghost has been seen at the Stockyards Hotel vicinity located at Fort Worths Main & Exchange where he actually stayed one night while helping Burkburnett and gang dedicate the Cowtown Coliseum early last century; but the old chief's ghost has pretty well left this Texas blue eyed devil and the part my ancestors played in the Fort Parker/Cynthia Ann Parker/Rachel Plummer/The Seachers part of this story pretty well alone.  After all, ex U.S.  President T.R. even recongnized that Quanah was one smart Indian! smile.gif

    gmg!

I went to school with Wayne J Parker a direct decendant of Quanah Parker at Crosbyton he was a couple of years ahead of Me. During adulthood Wayne ,who was quite a collector of Indian artifacts and things related to Quanah , often spoke to various groups and classes on Indians and Quanah. Wayne passed away several years ago and at that time was a farmer in Ralls.

I also attended college with Wayne at West Texas State, where he was a hell of a football player. He played center and fMLB, we played both ways back then. His son J.Rhett now lives in the Dallas area.

  5. DE - Jeremiah Cahpman: Dependable/Worker

DE - Willie Ransom - Definatley got better

DT - Sky Pruitt: Rotation guy in my opinion

DT - ??? - BIG hole; is the answer currently on the roster?  Have to say no.

OLB - Brandon Monroe: I really like the way he plays-personal opinion

MLB - Derek Mendoza: Capable back-up in my opnion

OLB - Maurice Holman: reminds me a little of Hurd (big shoes I know)

CB - RS Freshman: Should be fast, but scares me

CB - RS Freshman: See above

SS - Steve Warren: Got much better as year went on; I think he is in a tough battle with Ray Loren of CCJC

FS - Aaron Weathers - LOVE this guy;  cannot wait to see him for 2 more years

    Comments/opinions???

It seems that sometime during the season Quinn ws quoted as saying that Antione Bush the RS freshman from Tyler was the best CB on the team.

  6. Same question , what has happened to Brock Stickler ?

QB will be interesting , most recruiting services list Wilson as a DB, what will Phillips look like after a full year in the program ? Will offensive philosophy change to enhance the individual strengths of the skilled players ? Will the change in the color green really make a differnce ? smile.gif

  7. If you'll remember last summers' Dave Campbell's committed a full page to Joey and listed him as the starting QB for '05.  After talking to the editor during halftime of the SL Carrol game he mentioned that it was a bit of an embarrassment for them as well as for NT.  I agree.

Can't recall the last major starter lost to grades by one of the money programs from the Big 12?  Seems OU lost a guy a while back but I can't remember his name.  Maybe it's just that we don't keep up with them as closely as we do NT, but Byerly was a top featured player for us last year  in the media.  NT has lost numerous starters to grades or discipline problems the past 4 years.  It makes the winning streak seem that much more amazing.

    Rick

UT lost P.J. Tucker, their best BB player,to grades last year. A&M lost about 8 football players last year at semester, assume several were because of grades.

  8. Well stupidity, excuse me rationalization, is a common thing when it comes to the recruiting wars.

I look for ASU to do very well in Texas this year because we have done well in the past, and we are playing a lot of Texans. Guys like Myron Anderson, Quinton Thomas, Devertt Wade, Montice Harrison, Reggie Green, Zelos Abby, Brandon Rollins, Josh Williams, Curtis Bonds, Troy White, and Chris Easley , have all played key roles in ASU’s turnaround. Look for red-shirts like L.J. Williams, Travis Jones, Jerrell Norman and Jonathan Hissam to contribute next year.

Hey, if we could not beat you guys with non-Texans, might as well try it with Texans, right?

Not rationalization but fact, not saying all players that go out of state fall in this catagory. There was a discussion of this on Rivals.com not long ago.

  9. Rivals also had UTEP, Bama, SMU, and Tech all listed for him. DMN stated he chose ARK ST. over TCU and SMU

I'm a DD backer, but things like this drive me CRAZY!! When you look in the DMN area 100 and see Ark. St, LA LA, LA Tech, even NM ST listed repeatedly and no NT it really makes you wonder. Why is it that we have starting O-linemen who weigh 270?? Then you see schools come into our ground and just pick up a 330 lbs linemen like their picking cherries. It makes no sense to me. I am impressed by many of the people listed in the MGR recruiting section, but when you get to the O line there is not much there. Both in terms of number of prospects and then their size. For a team that runs the ball as much as we do, big hogs on the line are critical. And when you have 2 starting linemen who weigh under 280 it's not a good sign.

DD AND STAFF BRING ON THE BEEF!!!!!

    end of rant

I might hazard a guess that the kid has not passed the test allowing him to attend a Texas University, hence only out of state schools were available to him. This happens quite often , look at the top 100state recruits and notice how many only consider out of state schools.

  10. Here's what I was able to find at ncca.org, paraphrasing:

"Institutional staff members may not telephone a prospect or a prospect's relatives...[before July 1 after the end of the prospect's Junior year, except for one phone call  during March.]  After July 1, institutional staff members may telephone once per week..."

    Not sure on this one.

Since he is already a high school graduate, he is just like a eligible JC player.
