  1. I'm an old Childress Bobcat......Class of 1960

I am trying to think of anything noteworthy to mention.  I guess the closest any other Bobcat came to fame was David Seals.  David did a little time in the big house for rustling cattle.  The third night in a row that he backed his cattle truck up the the same spot in the same rancher's pasture to "borrow" a few head of cattle he was captured.  Now that takes guts - or no brain.

I think David also played a little BB at WT.

  2. Nathan Mann. the all everything LB for Pflugerville Connally, playing for the South team has not signed with anyone either.

I don't understand our not offering Hurley.  He was highly rated, attended our camp and I believe that we were the only Texas school that he showed interest.  The other schools were quality academic universities such as Stanford so I don't think that grades were the problem.  If he has decided to quit football then why would he go to summer camps or accept an offer to play in an all-star game?  Did he decide to go out of state?

Stoffels got into the mix later so I can understand to some degree why he might not have been offered.  But, in my opinion, some of those signed had lesser ability.

BTW, what happened to the old philosophy of loading up on tight ends?

  3. Do really feel like the SBC could have two teams with at least 6 wins ?

This is not about the condition of Legion Field.  There are some standards that have to be met.  Neither the NCAA or ESPN want a lawsuit because part of the stands fell.

This is about the SIXTH bowl for Conference USA, vs. one for the SBC,  With eight teams, we should have two bowl-worthy teams each year.

If these new bowls are approved, here is my count on the conferences and their bowl tie-ins:

    ACC - 6, plus a BCS bowl

Big East - 5, plus a BCS bowl

Big Ten - 6, plus a BCS bowl

    Big 12 - 8, plus a BCS bowl

    CUSA - 6

MAC - 3, plus a possiblility on the Birmingham Bowl

    MWC - 4

    PAC-10 - 5, plus a BCS bowl

    SBC - 1

    SEC - 8, plus a BCS bowl

WAC - 3, plus a possibility at GMAC bowl

There are three bowls that I don't know is the opponent has been decided.  The Poinsettia Bowl features the MWC against an undecided opponent.  The MWC pulled out of the Liberty Bowl and I don't know who'll be the replacement for them against CUSA's #1 team.  I believe that the Big 12 pulled out of the Fort Worth Bowl and I don't know who CUSA's opponent will be.

Wright Waters needs to be negotiating with one of these bowl committees or another bowl that might lose a tie-in as a result of accepting one of the above.  We need one more bowl.

  4. Glenn Ray, Midland High graduate, was the QB for NT.  North Texas has had a lot of Midland/Odessa players on winning teams.  We need to recruit West Texas more. The last Midland player was Andy Brewster who started for 4 years.  West Texas kids don't like losing and don't accept it well.  Every bowl team had several Midland kids and even the game when we defeat Tech had the Pertile brothers plus another one. I think Ray did attend Nebraska one year.

Glenn Ray was a Stanton High School grad. Stanton is just outside of Midland . smile.gif I coached him there in 1969.

  5. Evan is a scary, scary man. Sitting the stands, watching him rumble in for that TD was fantastic, then seeing him force the safety was awesome as he's pointing to the fans and I'm assuming members of his family, too. A lot of his plays saw Evan getting very, very close to that QB...not really for a sack, but a lot of pressure. He's putting his hands up to try to block passes, making smart moves to get the QB.

And on offense, he makes some very nice blocks, many buying Dolezel time in the pocket. And of course- taking the ball in was just as awesome.

I think he's proving his worth to the 'Rados.

Nothing like a mad Hippo on the prowl.

  6. Was talking to Brett Vito yesterday while watching our softball team drop a double-header to Texas Tech and he told me something that I thought was of note.  Apparently Justin Willis will be SMU's signal caller when they visit Fouts this fall.  For those that don't know he just graduated from Denton Ryan.  A little hometown flair for everyone and I'd think it might bring in a few more of the "casual" fans.

Article on this was in the newspaper yesterday, but you know how SMU quarterbacks are, he may start his on band anyday.

  7. Off the MAC board

MAC may have more Bowl Games in 2006

For the past five years, the MAC has had two bowl options, the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, and the Motor City Bowl in Detroit. For 2006, that may change for the better. Three new applications will be presented for bowl certification approval later this month

We need to defeat Akron to establish UNT as a viable bowl opponent for the MAC.

  8. I was visiting with a friend this morning and asked if he had gotten caught up in the George Mason hoopla.  He flatly said no and that he never pulls for a basketball team that does not have a football team.  He thinks that basketball only gives a lot of small schools an edge against teams that have football.  As you know, in order to have division one football you have to sponsor about 400 sports, while basketball only schools do not.  Is it fair?  Does it hurt mid majors who have division one football?  Should it be changed?  Curious at to what the green meanies think.

With 30 thousand students it would be hard to classify GM as a small school.

  9. Buff64,

Have they updated Kimbrough Stadium lately?

Have not been back in that area in quite sometime but I remember growing up and hearing the PA from my home.

Renovations are underway now. Replacing old chairbacks, adding several hundred new ones also. Working on restrooms and concession areas, as well as installing jumbotron scoreboard. Installed new carpet last year. Local group, Amarillo Cowboys, completly remolded practice fieldhouse last year.

  10. ----I thought WT joined the conf with Howard Payne,  Hardin Simmons, and McMurry, not the Lone Star with Angelo State, Abilene Christian and that group..  My error.  In any case that is still a big drop in status from playing division I schools. I knew they they were playing Howard Payne for a while which did not  give scholarships any more. I am surprised WT could not stay at the Southland level, I-AA.  We are the only college of the four Texas ones that was removed from Divison I-A to still be playing at a high level.  In any case for a while they had a non-schlorship program, that is what I remember and I knew they started playing Howard Payne which did not give scholarships.

---One advantage of being in West Texas is there is not a lot of competion for the sports dollar and attention (except HS) unlike in Dallas  which is big problem for North Texas..  The only other university in the area is TxTech which is 100 miles away and other than that New Mexico is closest which is much farther and out of state....  Travel costs may have been the big factor in not staying at the Southland Conf. level.  I know they had financial problems for a while in the early 80's so they dropped the scholarhips. I did not realize that WT had switched back.  They even had no football team in 1991 for some reason.

Don't recall ever playing Howard Payne, even when scholarship football was dropped they remained DII/

  11. A. where did they find Coach Carthel?

    B. Was he instrumental in turning around the program in his previous job? Or did he work for someone who did?

    C.  Do you know approximately what Coach Carthel's salary is?

    D. How would you describe his personality? How much does he get out into the community to promote Buffalo Football?

    F. How much does WT A$M charge for season tickets?  How much for walk-up reserved seat tickets?

He had been out of coaching for about 10 years and was farming. His last head college coaching job was at Eastern New Mexico University, while there he won the Lone Star Conference a couple of times ( can you phanthom having to recruit to Portales , New Mexico ?). He returned to coaching as head coach of the Amarillo Arena League team for a little over a year before he was offered the WT job. He won the championship at Amarillo.

Don't know his salary, sure it's public record.

He is very visable to the community and supporters, has weekly luncheons with the public in Amarillo every week. Will respond to calls and emails. Active in fund raising. He was a very sucessful high school coach at one time.

WT charges $90 for chairback, with cupholders, season tickets ( 6 home games next year ) Last year walkup reserved tickets were $12. Gen. Ad. $5. This coming year Buffalo Club members , with a min. $250 donation, get 1/2 priced reserved chairback tickets (2) up to 12 with a $5,000 donation, reserved parking , private entrance into the stadium and personal host that provides concession service to your seat. The seats will also have name plagues on them.

  12. Since when is the Lone Star Conference (West Texas/Div. 2) a non-scholarship conference? Also, we (and others) dropped to 1AA not 1A.

WT did play non-scholarship football for two years after dropping out of DI. They now play DII with a full alotment of 45 scholarships. Last year they were 10-2 after only winning 7 games combined the previous 3 years. They led DII in attendance last year averaging nearly 15,000 per game. This spring they signed twenty high school and 19 transfers includingn five from the Big 12. They have also signed 20 more high school players who will walk on next fall.

Don Carthel, the new coach , was hired last spring , after recruiting season and managed to turn the program completly around.

  13. One thing you can't overlook about Brent Musberger is the fact that he is at least interested in whatever game he is calling. Opposed to MIke Gottfried who always seems to have just been aroused from his nap , or Rod Gilmore, who is sure every team is overated unless it happens to be a California team. Then there are all those extras the networks use that were perfect when they played .

The great Terry Stembridge , before the Spurs there was the Dallas Chaperrals , then the Texas Chaperrals that split time between Dallas, San Antonio and Lubbock.

" there will be another day "

Also don't forget Dick Risenhoover the orginal Texas Rangers announcer.
