  3. Roderick saw my son and I walking and graciously offered his gloves as a souvenir to my boy. I asked him for a photo op and he seemed happy to do so. I thank this young man for making my son's day and giving him a memory he will never forget.

  5. The crowd of 38,380 seemed sparse in the 92,100-seat Cotton Bowl, and seemingly more than 38,000 of those fans were wearing their North Texas green, filling the stands behind their team’s sideline from end zone to end zone, not surprising with the campus located about 45 minutes from the stadium. Small clumps of Rebel red did their best to buoy UNLV, a near-touchdown underdog. The teams’ honorary captains were announced for the pregame coin toss, the first of many times the Rebels were outclassed on the field that day: UNLV’s representative was former cornerback Kevin Thomas, a decent enough player who had one interception in 24 career games with the Buffalo Bills. North Texas, meanwhile, was honored with the presence of Mean Green legend, Pro Football Hall of Famer and iconic Coca-Cola pitchman “Mean” Joe Greene, who still looked like he could sack someone at the age of 67. UNLV President Neal Smatresk gave Rebel fans the next cheer, though, one month before he takes over as North Texas’ president, when his ceremonial coin toss came up UNLV’s way. The crowd was quiet early, when the Rebels drove 95 yards for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead on their first possession. And when the Mean Green were stopped on their next drive, it seemed like it might be UNLV’s day. But then the Rebels’ Keith Whitely muffed the punt, and North Texas parlayed the gift into a game-tying touchdown. UNLV never did regain its swagger. - See more at: http://vegasseven.com/2014/01/07/rebels-day-among-legends/#sthash.hZopVXWE.dpuf
  6. I got this idea as I fell asleep last night watching this damn thing again for the 5th time!!! My wife is like you are crazy!! Come on guys, they say the first step to overcoming an addiction is being honest with yourself about it ;-) I see this as sort of a "raise your hand if you cried during old yeller" poll...
  7. Former Iowa State football coach Dan McCarney led North Texas to its first bowl win in more than a decade (beating UNLV 36-14 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl). And according to ESPN blogger Richard Durrett, fans weren’t quite sure how to react. “Some of them contemplated rushing the field and in the end, maybe 500 of them decided to join the team in celebration at the 50-yard line, doing so in the most calm and orderly "storming" of a field you'll ever see.” Read more: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20140106/SPORTS/301060083/0/NEWS01/?odyssey=nav|head
  8. UNT fans will be talking about the Mean Green’s win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl for years. The win — and the Mean Green’s breakout season in general — changed the course of the program. We will share our thoughts on how over the next few weeks/months. Before we do, we ought to stop to consider the legacy of UNT’s senior class. We wrote about it quite a bit in the days leading up to the Heart of Dallas Bowl and in the wake of UNT’s win in the paper. What we haven’t done is talk about it much on the blog — a place where we can be a little more opinionated. 10. Championships arrive with regularity in Denton, judging by recent history. Before the calendar flipped to 2013, Ryan had won state titles football and basketball and Guyer in football not all that long ago. North Texas won a bowl game back in 2002 —and that was just for starters. What made 2013 special in Denton-area sports is the string of championships that seemed to come one right after another. 13. HITS: Texas Tech, Houston and Oklahoma State are now joined by the University of North Texas in the growing list of winners of the Heart of Dallas Bowl at the Cotton Bowl stadium at Fair Park. Thats quite a list, and UNT fits right in after its 36-14 demolition of Nevada-Las Vegas on New Years Day. The Mean Green celebrated the 100th year in program history with a 9-4 finish, only five years after going 1-11 in 2008. Congratulations to coach Dan McCarney, his staff and his players. The only imperfect note was the bowl games attendance, a four-year low of 38,380. Dallas, we can do better than this, and please remember that proceeds go to worthy charities. See you next year. 16. What it means: This is a huge win for North Texas. It marks the Mean Green's third bowl win in school history and first since 2002. It had been a while since they've even been to a bowl game (2004 was their last trip) but Dan McCarney and Co. appear to be headed in the right direction. After finishing 4-8 a year ago, finishing 9-4 this season is a nice turnaround for the Mean Green. Read more: http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/92226/instant-analysis-north-texas-36-unlv-14
