  1. Hey guys, this is the actual GB here...

My tool of a roommate got a hold of my computer earlier and messed with a bunch of stuff. Facebook, my background, the post above...needless to say I've deleted the offending post. While I'm not an Ohio Douche, the guy I live with most definitely is, and shows it off to anyone and everyone that isn't affiliated with OSU (which makes road games we go to kind of hairy sometimes). He knows I still follow UNT sports (went there my freshman year) so I guess he thought this would be funny.

Either way, hope you guys don't hold any harsh feelings for me because of that. There's douches in the OSU fanbase but I'd like to think that there's not that many. Here's to both teams kicking some tail in the Dance!

  2. Have you seen the plans for the new business building? :(

I've seen them. IMHO, they could have done worse. Could have done better, like whatever replaced Masters Hall, but overall I'd chalk this one up to a win. It'll be more than adequate for the COB with modern amenities, and help create buzz with prospective business students. I like the location, too...though I'd have rather seen Kendall Hall renovated if possible.

NT's got the right idea...just keep replacing those vast, hideous parking lots near the center of campus and everything will work out, haha.

  3. I just hope that whatever happens there, the developer retains a classic feel. I used to be all about the splashy and new looking, but have come to appreciate the charm and beauty of old school architecture. Unlike what NT is doing these days on campus. I wish the school would have kept that in mind when designing the new buildings.

Agreed, though I think the university has done a fantastic job combining traditional collegiate elements with modern styles in the newer buildings. Very clean and refined-looking without going too crazy. I'd still like to see some of the 1960's-70's buildings replaced though.

Either way, anything that can move the neighborhoods around NT to more of a walking district is great in my opinion. Pedestrian friendliness is a hallmark of most established universities with close-by off campus student populations.

  4. When it's all said and done, I think this is a win-win situation. A new facility with modern amenities for the COB is vital to the university, especially with the way they've been trying to cultivate the business programs the past few years. Whether or not the building is 'ugly' or not is pretty much a moot point, IMO. It'll look cool for at least the next few years, and 40 years from now will STILL look and function better than places like the GAB or Language Building (and waaay too many other outdated buildings on campus).

Besides, it's essentially replacing a massive, ugly parking lot. It's good to see the university phasing those out...they're everywhere and make the campus look horrible. I'd have liked to have seen Kendall Hall renovated, but since I'm guessing that wasn't possible or efficient, this is a great alternative.

  5. Having attended NT and OSU, I feel like I've got a little perspective on this. The DFW area is such a different type of beast than a lot of the "college towns" y'all are talking about. Most of those towns have the type of fervent support for the local colleges and universities because it's literally all they've got besides the high schools. With the metroplex expanding up I-35E and Denton being literally absorbed into it, the city lacks that aspect. The commuters really don't help, either, but that's for later. Let me put it this way: Columbus, OH has 1.) Ohio State, 2.) the Blue Jackets, and 3.) the Columbus Crew. The Crew and CBJ have loyal fan bases and are respectable teams in their leagues, but neither come close to rivaling OSU's, which has been around for 130 years, with the hockey and soccer teams existing for a combined 25-30 years.

Columbus is a decent sized city, but it's not part of a sprawling metro area like Denton. Any local college (see TCU) has to compete with the Cowboys, Mavs, Rangers, Stars, UT, A&M, OU, TT, and LSU sports to an extent due to the nature of the population. Since most people aren't familiar with NT having traditions of ANY kind (and I mean WINNING traditions, or anything really consistent...shades of green anyone?), then there's less opportunity for people to identify with even the largest of public universities in the area...which NT is. NT isn't a branch campus of a larger university but it gets treated that way because nobody has a reason to care besides those associated with it.

My final point is that Denton and the campus area aren't built for the type of "college town" atmosphere that we all crave. The main business district for students - Fry St. - was razed. It's a shell of its former self, which is sad, and what's worse is that nobody's doing anything about it. There's next to nothing across the street from the dorms on Eagle Drive, except for the shopping center and Save-A-Lot. There's hardly anything to the east of campus, and to the west are neighborhoods and highway. To me, to have the type of feeling you want, there needs to be a reason for pedestrian traffic. Living in the DFW area, nobody really ever walks around, which in itself is vital to your "college towns". The new stadium will help significantly, but Denton HAS to develop the campus area with businesses for there to be any kind of progress.

  6. Like Smitty said, Montgomery and the defense as a unit because that's exactly what they played as - a unit.

Cam ran all over the BSU defense and looked incredibly strong for a Sun Belt running back (understand this is the perception that most will have - I've seen Jamario Thomas play in person), dragging defenders on multiple occasions. I'm predicting a great year for Cam and the running backs. Hope Micah Mosley can earn some more playing time, that dude's a fighter.

  7. It's going to sit across the street from 2 buildings.... the "Classic" Matthews and the decidedly "Modern" Wooten.

I'm hoping for a Classic look. The GAB, Wooten, and Union are enough "60's - 70's" architecture for this campus.

Add the Language building to that list...that place is something out of M.C. Escher's nightmare on the inside. The GAB is bad enough...the Union's kind of in a weird place, so I imagine the architects were limited by space (and fashionable architecture at the time as well...)

  8. I wrote about this in my post in the "new renderings" thread. NT has potential for these endzone seats....they could be a really cool and unique student section in a few years when the stadium fills up consistently. Hate to touch on the Buckeyes again, but the student tickets in the Shoe are in the south endzone which is roughly "T"-shaped. Some of the seats up in the top corners are quite literally OUTSIDE the confines of the main stadium structure, yet every seat is filled. I wouldn't worry about the wing-tips in the new stadium. NT is going places and SOON. People will clamor for those seats.

  9. WOW, these renderings provide such a great picture of not only the concepts of the stadium, but the vision that the athletic department has. Very telling about where they want NT to go in the next few years.

For those concerned about the lack of seat backs, a vast majority of college stadiums do without them. Ohio Stadium, for example, is probably 80% bleachers, with the only plastic molded seats being between the 40's under the press boxes. Season ticket holders (besides students) have an option to purchase padded seatbacks for their bleacher seats, which remain there year-round.

In addition, the endzone seats should be really cool to sit in, potential for a student section there. You get such a different angle, and I think the wing seats will be much more appreciated than the Fouts endzones since the new stadium wont be located 15 miles from the field.

  10. Hey, I knew things had passed me by when I was at a Starbucks about 10 years ago talking to a seemingly nice enough young lady, about to graduate from high school in Colleyville. She told me she had already gone through, and quit, a period of drug and alcohol abuse (she was around 17, I guess), and was looking forward to enrolling in school at UNT, in part, to get away from drugs and alcohol. I didn't say anything to contradict that, but it seemed strange, based on the time I spent there in the 70's and 80's. Maybe some school teachers are members of this board and could give us a clue about what's really happening around here with kids of that age. If things seem strange now, maybe we could think what our generation looked like to those who came before.

LOL Colleyville Heritage, my alma mater ceases to amaze (though this doesn't shock me one bit).

  11. Although during the Maurice McAdow days, they would line up (company front style) at the north end zone and play a very impressive fanfare before entering the field. It was better pagentry than what we have now. Of course the GB of those days was about 125 members and they were very up-tempo (marching 8 to 5). Their uni's were very similar to the Ohio State Band's uni's. And like Ohio State, they wore spats. One of Mr. McAdow's favorite words and/or commands to the band was "FLOURISH, FLOURISH".

I would like to see the fanfare that they used to play during those days brought back. I think it must have been written by a North Texas graduate for the Band, because in all the years I've gone to HS and College football games, I've never heard a fanfare like it.

The band's an integral part of the pageantry at any school. Granted, OSU's use of the band is different than most because most people consider the band just as holy as the football team here...but they're all part of the show.

The first time I saw what's in this video in person really opened my eyes to the absolute spectacle that is college football. Still gives me goosebumps every time the team comes out:

  12. Leaving the Las Vegas airport last week...I noticed that UNLV are already promoting their spring game, home opener, and season tickets on their big jumbotron-esque electronic billboard outside The Thomas & Mack Center. Quite honestly, it pissed me off that I already know more about UNLV's spring game than I do about NT's.

OSU has been advertising their spring game since the day after the Fiesta Bowl. And for the second year in a row, they're bundling a men's lacrosse game, vs. Notre Dame with the spring football game. Non-revenue sport gets some face time, the lax players get to play in the stadium and fans get to enjoy two games for the price of one.

  13. There has been all sorts of posts on the gmg boards stating how bad NT football is and how can we recruit quality players with our losing record. Here's the answer:

Anthony Charles 3* LB from Fort Scott is quoted as saying:

"Charles was impressed with UNT's coaches and believes he can help the team to improve. "" The coaches seemed to care more about what I will do after football than the other coaches I talked to. I believe we can be a good team in the future after meeting some of the guys there now and the ones who were on visits. " Translated...he can help the team...(with playing time)

Folks he chose NT over offers from Kansas, Kansas State, Fresno State and South Florida.

Jamaal Jackson WR from SWMiss CC...Style of offense..."they (NT) spread the ball around and I feel I fit with their program. I will have a chance to catch a lot of balls. I have been watching what Casey is doing for them and feel like I can fill the void when he is gone." Translated....playing time. He chose NT over offers from Louisiana Tech and South Alabama.

And a new stadium that's all but guaranteed now.
