  1. Maybe he is playing down by the school yard?

    /horrible and trying too hard/

I doubt we have many on the board who remember that tune? (Age a factor in this one) I loved it! Paul Simon also married Edie Brickell, so I have another reason to worship him.

  2. There's nothing wrong with being realistic. It's nice to be able to say this team is "realistically" better than we have been in years. Who cares about what used to be??? The Gary DeLoach defense seems to be making it's presence felt... Yes, Tune threw a pick that turned the Ohio game around... it happens. But at least we were in the game until the end. I'll take a dozen of those games over the Rice games of the past. Count me in for a few wins this year. Not Alabama (I'm a realist, not crazy...Alanbama 35/UNT-17), but we will compete in most games.

As the DCB has prognosticated... "Cam Montgomery running the ball is good for 5 wins."

It's early int he season, but so far I think he's right...

  3. why isn't he in the middle of the line when it comes to blocking field goals?

That would be a good spot for a 6-9 lineman. Good question. How about one more... Why is Eddie Gilmore still playing DT instead of DE??? Akpunku is fast, but is he really better at DE than a guy who's played there and played well? Lots of strange things going on. We'll have some answers Thursday night.

  4. I think this is the third time we've done this... what the hell, I'll change it up a bit on this one. NT kicks an extra field goal. I hope our secondary is much improved from last year's version, but I'm thinking the boys in Muncie have watched a little game film. We'll know for sure in two days...

    Ball State - 44

    North Texas - 17

  5. Ball State is a good test of how far the defense has come. It is not a disaster if we lose, but it wont help much if we get blown out.... again. We need positive signs that the "new and improved Titanic" wont sink. We've seen enough bad football to have paid our dues, plus interest. I want to see Riley be Riley, and this offense control the clock a little. The defense needs play-makers on the line. I'm not sure Gilmore at DT is a good example of the changes we need? I'm hoping there are reasons for some of those things.

I feel like we are a 3-9 team... I hope for better.

  6. Good article.. I liked the part where he suggests the coaches need to win now to "return for a fourth year". I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that these coaches will be back even if we have another bad year. Technically, we are AGAIN rebuilding... (new Freshman QB, new WR's, JUCO DL's, young secondary...yada yada yada) I think RV has Todd Dodge on a short leash, but the leash is probably four years long. I would love to see some improvement...ANY improvement. I hope this is a better year.

  7. My son and I go to a couple of SMU games each year, so we are probably going to opening day. This is Manny Sanders last year, and he will be drafted. I dont know a thing about Stephen F.'s team, but SMU Ex-QB Justin Willis will be playing WR for his final season. This could be interesting... Bo Mitchell and Willis on the field at the same time? JJ loves offensive options. We had the same thing at times last year with The Godfather and Riley on the field at the same time. Riley got knocked out for the year, so we didnt get as much time to see the WR pass option. I know, why do we care? In Denton we really dont, but it's college football... and bad college football is still better than no college football.

    That's what I think...

  8. I have to say the "Baylor in the Big-XII" thing has little merit with me. SMU has tried that in several conferences now, and moving out does not mean moving up? Being the door-mat of a BCS conference doesnt equate at all with winning a conference title...in ANY conference. Thanks to all the BCS loyalists, but keep your money. I'll take my trip to New Orleans when we earn it in the SBC.

  9. The GMG Bowl has been a great event for the past few years, and a great way for everyone to get together for a good cause. As many know, the economy has taken a down-turn and many of our Mean Green family have either lost their jobs, cannot find work, or are struggling to make ends meet. The costs of putting on the GMG Bowl rises each year, and vendors who have managed to stay in business can no longer be as generous with us. Their expenses also continue to rise. After some discussions with vendors (who are also struggling or already out of business), and due considerrations to our own Mean Green Family... the GoMeanGreen.Com bowl for the 2009 season will be suspended for this year. I realize some will be dissapointed by missing the game, but please understand how difficult it would be for many to play this year. We normally have between five and ten shirts that are requested, then go unpaid each year as those players cannot pay their fees. That number would certainly go up this year, and game/shirt fees would be close to $50.00 a person. I pay those fees ahead of time each year, and could not justify pressuring so many people to pay who may need the money for other things? I understand the money could be much better spent in economic times like these. We will resume the game for the 2010 season, in hopes that the economy has rebounded somewhat. In the meantime, if we all want to get together and play a flag football game wearing our old GMG shirts... then put your ideas on the board and see where it goes.

In it's place, we (GMG.com board members) have adopted a 2nd Grade Class at T.J. Lee Elementary School in Irving Texas. We are participating in the "Adopt a College" program, intended to help kids understand the neccessity of education. The goal is to stress the importance of school early, and possibly reduce the older-student drop-out rate in Texas schools. We have donated $300.00 dollars in shirts (Univeristy of North Texas official shirts) already, and have spent time with that class and teacher. The students are made aware of the need for an education by visits from NT Alums, and wear their North Texas shirts as a class uniform every Monday. It should also be noted that the Teacher (Mrs. Foster) is a North Texas Alum, and her husband was the High School Football Coach for our North Texas All-American...WR-Casey Fitzgerald. The class will take pictures for us throughout the year in their NT shirts, and I will post those pictures on the board. I may also ask more of you to go to the class with me and talk about your jobs and how your college education has helped you succeed. The kids really respond to these appearances.

Thanks again to those I have either emailed or spoken with. For everyone else, be patient and know the GMG.com Bowl will be back in 2010.

  10. I watched Riley play a few games at SLC. There is a reason he was the number three QB in the state. If we even get half of what that kid can do in the pocket, we'll be fine. His knowledge of the offense, quick reads, and good foot speed when the pocket collapses make him the best option for us. The only real question is durability. I have faith in Riley. Honestly, can this team get any worse than last year? The kid deserves a chance to make a difference. Emmitt and I watched him play the best HS team Florida had to offer, and Riley played very well. (Okay, yes... he also got knocked out of that game?) Remember there is a risk with ANY QB. I'll put my faith in #11.

  11. For Vizza, it was clear that Dodge was not going to make any change necessary to better this program, not in the coaching staff or scheme. And, thus, he did the wise thing and left. He'll now go somewhere where he can get better coaching and, perhaps, be able to get into bowl game and experience some of the good times in college football in the three years he has remaining.

Good luck, Giovanni. The vast majority of us, as you and your family know, wish you well.

Well said... and right on the money.

    GMG!!!
