  1. Good article, but reading all of that gave me a headache. Yes, I know I'm shallow, but I left the "Bring Dickey back" thread for "is RV doing it wrong?". I was hoping for a UNT90 response and a firing squad? Guess we are all a little tired of it all.. So, Let's change the subject and lighten things up a little. I think Hal Wasson would  make a GREAT UNT Head Football Coach!

  2. I think Brett understands the match up problem well enough. Driskel is a passing wild man, but let's not waive the white towel just yet. We have seen improvement from Demarcus Smith each week, and that will be the case against Latex. Wilson is a good runner, but Demarcus will keep the Dogs Defense off balance with his legs. When the Bulldogs put 8 in the box..hello Carlos Harris. I don't know that we can beat the dogs, but I think we can keep it close. Regardless of the score, we are in a win-win in this game. If we catch lightning in a bottle and the stars are aligned, we can win. If we are clearly over matched and lose, Demarcus Smith still gets real time practice against a good opponent and learns a little more for next season. This year is now truly about next year, and this is a very useful scrimmage. Keep playing Demarcus, Wilson and Ivery, Coach Chico!

No disappointment from this Alum, regardless of the outcome.

  3. I hope you are right? Chad Morris is a very good recruiter and has already laid the ground work for some top area talent. I know he has a verbal already from a very good LB from Mansfield Timberview. (SMU parent talks about him here at work daily) I love talking college football with him, but I take a black eye almost every conversation? We need for North Texas to have a guy that recruits with the best, if that is possible? Here's to the hope that the right coach gets hired and can deliver some talent to our beloved Mean Green Football. If RV picks another Coach from the Corn States?, here's hoping Apogee sells Valium and beer by the gallon.

  4. Cant say missing out on Fritz would bother me? Good coaching history, but not exactly the barn-burner needed to energize the North Texas Fan Base right now? We need to be excited! We need to be re-involved! We need RV to take a huge dose of speed and just go hire Coach Briles or Coach Cumbie!  Now, if RV should take Mydol by mistake?..June Jones coaches Football and runs the beer concession through 2020.

  5. Didnt realize he was so close to 2K? Is that club for rushing and receiving (total yards) or just rushing? Seems like most of his touchdowns and yardage came from catching the ball? Still, JJ is a great talent and good team player for the Mean Green. Not sure what his future holds, but he would make a very good RB coach.

  6. For those who believe lil' Briles will be anything like Kingsbury as Tech.

Tech has literally run the exact same system since Mike Leach got there in 2000, Kingsbury was a QB in that system. For the past 15 years Tech's main selling point has been their offense. They have recruited to that offense, and know what to expect from their recruits year in and year out. Kingsbury was basically handed the same system he ran when he played, and I would say that gave him a much easier time selling to recruits and finding a staff because A) the recruits have known the system for years, and B) the staff has run it for years. This, in my opinion has made Kingsbury's job infinitely easier, and yet he has been mediocre.

If we hired Briles, it would take him years to implement a system than UNT has never run to my knowledge (Air raid, which is different that a conventional spread attack). As of now we have no identity, and he would have to work his ass off to establish an identity similar to the one Tech has had for years. He will NOT have the luxuries gifted to him that Kingsbury did.

Agreed that "Eye-Candy Cliff" (or so he is called by all the softball moms) was an immediate fit at TTech, but why would it take Briles so long to implement his offense at North Texas? Any head coach we hire will have a learning curve right out of the shoot, but recruiting players to fit his offense is a must before we can win? I'm not so sure. Starting with the skill position players he inherits here is not so tough a road. Briles would already have a QB that is mobile and can throw (Smith), have several returning speedy receivers (Tee Goree, Turner Smiley, Darvin Kidsy, DeAundrey Bradley, etc.), and RB's that can catch out of the backfield (Wilson, Ivery, Rollins). Now picture those weapons plus his first year recruits, which should be significantly better than what we have had in a long time. That is what Briles is known for, right? I think we would see an amazing product on the field in the first year. Can we expect to go 12-0?, not likely.. but I believe we would see a ton of points scored each week and have very exciting football to watch. That gets us out of the ridiculous "Mac-rut" we have been in and turns the heads of future highly-skilled recruits. Instead of endlessly spiraling downward this program could really start an upward trend. That is how other upward moving programs did it? I honestly cant see a scenario where it takes Briles years to make his system work at North Texas? Of course it depends on whether or not our QB's can absorb his offense. We know RG III and Bryce Petty got it.. so I think Demarcus Smith and Connor Means can get it. I'm not comparing them, just saying that offense works with more than one type of QB.

Food for thought.. call me an optimist.

  7. Briles is my clear #1, with Sonny Cumbie being my #2, and Applewhite a distant #3. I understand the issues with age and experience and the supposed parallel to our former Southlake Savior. I think we should be realists now and think outside the box. Yes, Todd Dodge was a "shock value" hire considering his resume. We needed attention and good press, and for a short time we got that. Dodge was just in over his head, and not a successful Big XII Offensive Coordinator. Briles has not only learned from a true class act in his father Art, but he was the Big-XII recruiter of the year, runs an EXPLOSIVE "Guns-Blazing" offense, and has personally coached or mentored some of the better QB's and WR's now playing in the NFL. He could get the best out of Demarcus Smith and knows how to open up an offense at the FBS level. Briles can also get into living rooms and tell success stories that recruits and parents would love to hear. Maybe we land a three or four star WR or QB that we would not have a chance at otherwise? Briles is very well known in Texas and has credibility already among most high school coaches. Recruits who come from high scoring offenses might actually consider a career at North Texas with Briles as a head coach? Recruits will hear about bowl games, NFL players, and possible invitations to the annual NFL scouting combine which is something we haven't done much of around here. There are so many other possibilities with a coach like that. I know most of this is speculation and my opinion may be a bit tainted. I remember all of those years when Baylor was the doormat of the Big XII, but they are no longer that. I want North Texas to have the same shot at success and moving forward. I say if Briles can do that, then why not North Texas?

I hear weekly here at work how bad North Texas is right now, mostly from graduates of other Texas schools. I am tired of having to defend a University that has thirty seven thousand students, a nice campus,  and a damn nice football stadium. The only things holding North Texas back are bad coaching and an Athletic Director who has apparently thrown in the towel. It's time to hire the right man for the job. I believe Briles is that man, and if I am wrong then hire someone like him please. We are at a turning point now and have the opportunity to make things right. Please no more old recycled coaches who have skins on the wall from a decade ago. Young, guns-blazing offensive minds who have had success at an FBS school and appeal to the high school stud players. If RV hires one more worthless or washed out coach, I'm going to take my old UNT Jerseys and throw them on the Athletic Center lawn! (Disclaimer: not giving up my 2000's Bowl Team Jerseys. We were allowed participants in that era, and had not been banished from practices or scrimmages yet. I get to keep those.)

  8. Sorry Brett.. but I must disagree. I am extremely happy Chico is letting D. Smitty drive the car for the remaining 100 laps. He deserves the time to learn as much as he can this season. However, let's be honest about our defense. First, SMU is horrid, and they hung 30 plus on us. Second, Portland State (a good FCS Team, but still a FCS Team) hung 60 plus on us. Third, UTSA lost to Arizona by 10 points (42-32) and lost to both Colorado State and La. Tech by 3 points or less in each game? That team should have a better record than 1-6. I know the North Texas Defense is working out the kinks, but I think this game will be more of a defensive challenge than is being advertised. For the record, I have the score 38 - 21 MOPAR, which is respectable. I am also on record as saying I don't care if we win another game THIS year, as long as our younger players get the bulk of the playing time. Chico seems to be doing just that, so I say well done Coach Canales! I hope the next Head Coach benefits from your efforts.

Get the kinks out now Demarcus. Improve each week and be even better next year! Also a small request for our young CB's.. Please get closer to the line of scrimmage? A receiver shouldn't be yelling "I'm open" before the ball is snapped..

  9. I wouldn't worry about the Marshall game, no matter what the point spread is? Demarcus Smith gets better each week and at least the team is fun to watch again. This season is basically extended training camp for next year anyway. Now, If Portland State offers us $450K to play them at their homecoming game next season?.. we have a big problem.

  10. What most of us seem to agree on is that list doesn't do much for us. If RV is going to be the hiring manager..AGAIN, then he must not repeat the last mistake. Get Sonny Cumbie or another "Pass Happy-Guns Blazing" offensive guru in here to get people excited again. It's time to make a real change, and the same ole hum-drum coaching candidates should be out the window. Those guys are out there, but you still have to sell them on what can be accomplished at North Texas. By the end of this season we will know what D. Smith has to offer next season. That may be enough to peak a coach's interest? As I am also trying to accept what appears to be a forgone conclusion, here is a quick note to our continuing AD...

    Please don't hire Hal Wasson.

    GMG!!!

  11. Get Sonny Cumbie in here to run that Texas Tech - drunken Kung-Fu Master Mike Leach Offense. Several Tech QB's (Seth Doge, BJ Simon, Sonny Cumbie, Graham Harrell) threw for over 4000 plus yards in a season and 2 of them had over 5000 yard passing seasons. Cumbie can add an occasional running play to throw the defense off if he wants? It would be exciting as hell and get us on Sports Center almost weekly. As for the Defense, who cares? Ask Darrell Daniels to come back and run a standard 4-3 Defense. Tell DD he has to have 3 sacks and 1 Interception per game. He'll get it done. Our offense will score 40 or more points each week anyway. At least that is what Texas Tech used to do..

  12. Put me on the record as saying I don't think RV deserves this.  Maybe I am just an ole softy but I think these matters could be handled professionally and with class.

FFR and I had this discussion via text last night, and Rick McKinney is one of the most supportive and dedicated NT Alums I have ever known. He is for the banner, but I am not. I don't think the banner accomplishes much in the way of change, and it only shows any potential recruits how disgruntled everyone is? I realize why the message will be up there, and many have certainly tried other avenues to get their points across. I am also on record as wanting RV gone, and I stand by that. I am just not sure if a negative banner flying around high school kids on game day hurts our recruiting efforts? Maybe the point is our recruiting is so bad now that things cannot get any worse, and if so no harm is possible. Still, what would a potential future RB sitting in the stands think when he sees a message like that flying around at a home game? Let's say he visits UTSA next weekend and gets nothing but positive vibes from the fans and Alums he encounters? What reservations would be going through his mind when our new head coach does get the chance to speak with him and his parents? I know these are "what if's", but our new coach will not be selling North Texas to a kid from Denton Guyer or Allen? Those kids already know the deal here. He will be selling North Texas to a kid who only knows what he saw on his one game day visit to Denton? I agree that a message needs to be sent, but who is that message really intended for? My name is Steve Thomas and most of you know me. I like RV as he is a very good person, but I agree it's time for new blood and a new vision. I'm just of the opinion that the airborne attack may do more harm than good..

  13. I like Oldguy's point here, but I think the problem is bigger than just using incentives to get sales rolling? I like these ideas, and any ideas must certainly be considered at this point. The problem is more about perception. North Texas has had a monkey on it's back for years, and the damage done over the past decade has made the perception of NT worse. Many student athletes in the area would rather go to a smaller FCS school than go to NT? My daughter's softball position coach is a High School Senior in Keller and beast catcher for American Freedom Club Softball. She and her father have already visited Baylor, Texas A&M, and Stephen F. Austin. She didn't even consider North Texas as a contender?. I told her I would take her around campus myself and show her the softball facilities. She said "No offense, but we won't look at UNT". It's painfully obvious that is't all about the perception. Nothing I could say would make a difference, and it would be hypocritical for me to even attempt it.

I had been a loyal season ticket holder since 1997, and I was one of the many passionate in our Alumni Group. (Myself, Emmitt, FFR Rick, Zeke, The entire Hiatt Family, Rudy, Marshall, Lera, Melissa, Erin, and countless others) We spent our time doing anything and everything to give back to this program and we demonstrated our dedication to it. In return, we became involved in it and even had a voice that Darrell Dickey and Rick Villareal heard. It meant a lot to them to have Alums on the practice fields when our teams were going at it. Many of us remember when Brandon Kennedy was knocking OL's into the crowd as we watched close by, or Jamario Thomas skirting around the corner to run right by us at 80 MPH to score a practice touchdown. Harry and I were standing on the Fouts Field sidelines during practice, I walked up to Coach Kelvin Martin and asked "Who's that Johnny Quinn Kid who is running such great routes?" Those were winning years, and we were a part of it. That was more than enough to sell tickets and get people excited about North Texas. Was that going to be enough going forward?, of course not. It was the perception that we and the community mattered, and the Athletic Department understood how important those things were to all of us. Yes, times change, coaches come and go.. I get it. But the magic that was the North Texas Spirit has been lost to apathy and the "Give up" attitude of our Athletic Department. Today North Texas is larger than ever, with more students than ever, and more Alumni than ever. There is also less excitement and involvement than ever. I am no longer a season ticket holder as I lost faith and time for the show, and that is all it is now.. a bad show. Here is a simple idea.. If the NT AD really want to sell tickets, don't make the same mistakes over and over? The Athletic Department needs to hire a coach who needs the Alums, students, and fans to be involved again. Sell tickets after hiring a coach who tells everyone North Texas will be relevant again. Hire a coach who doesn't tell everyone how hard it is to recruit here?, but how important we are to high school athletes while standing in their living rooms. I dont care what ring he won at another school, win a ring at our school. Also, I don't want to go watch SMU practice again in the fall, and I can. Let us watch our own team practice, and not just in the freaking spring. How about we GIVE the damn tail section tickets to high schools and Junior colleges for home games! Make the tickets $5.00 for any other walk-up fans. Trinity and Allen played there last year almost sold the place out for a high school game. High school kids will come out if the tickets are free. That gets bodies in the stands. Those bodies buy food and drinks.. you will make money Mister UNT-AD. Emmitt and I sat in the tail section for that Allen-Trinity game and It wasn't a bad view at all.

My apologies to Oldguystudent for this rant. His thread is about selling MGC memberships and making money. I hope I've covered some of that. GMG!!!

  14. The Good - Demarcus Smith is a beast, just needs more time to work with the starters. Timing is everything. Tee Goree also showed us something.

The Bad - I could strain spaghetti with our defense. Forget the secondary issues, who can tackle up front? If Apogee had a muddy field that WKU running back would have had a clean jersey in the 4th quarter. 197 rushing yards in three quarters? "Come on man.."

The ugly - Network commentators giving us the business. Having to hear Rick Neuheisel say "Mean Green?.. they are not mean anymore." and hearing how bad "North Texas State" is playing right now, and yes.. That WKU QB is very good, but you cant put him in the NFL Hall of Fame until he gets drafted Randy Cross!.. Jeesh.

I know the season is not over yet, and the good signs from last night made a huge difference for me. Just win one somewhere Chico.. Oh, and D-Marc sure could use a bye-week right about now?

    GMG!!!

  15. I think the point of what we saw last night was exactly that.. Chico was no longer handcuffed to a QB who doesn't fit his scheme? We saw a QB with little game experience and a lot of athletic ability make Chico's system work. Demarcus Smith made some mistakes of course, but the his play-making ability made an obvious impact. Imagine what can be done next season with that kid at QB, having game experience under his belt and a full summer to learn Chico's offense? Last night suggested to me that Chico's offense can work. I was encouraged by what looked like progress at times and some very good plays were made by D-Marc. If North Texas had a defensive player who could tackle we would have been in that game and been competitive. Now, honestly I am on record as wanting Coach Briles for the next Mean Green Head Coach. I still believe Chico would do well as OC with a talent like Smith at QB. My major concern in regards to Coach Canales has been "dead-horsed" on this board for over a month now. Recruiting deficiencies make running a fast-paced offense very difficult. I think we would need a coach with skins on the wall to sell the Mean Green vision to that level of talented high school kids. Still, we cant overlook the positives from last night. Coach Canales gets a B+ for what I saw. We have a Defensive Coordinator who gets an F, and should get a one-way bus ticket out of town.

    GMG!!!

  16. Agreed.. the mistakes that were made with Dajon (no patience for mistakes, no time to develop, no game plan for his strengths) were obvious to everyone. I believe the Mean Green Nation understands the growing pains of a young QB, even if Coach Mac did not. As much as I want to win now, I am willing to wait until next season for W's if Chico uses THIS season to get "The Decade" ready for 2016. I don't care if he throws 20 int's, let the kid learn his lessons now, and grow him for our future. I think we will see tremendously good AND bad plays this year, but the fans and Alums will again be energized by this program. Show us you are ready to do what some other coaches couldn't do, Chico. Give Demarcus seven full games and a proper game plan to work with. Don't just judge him by his game-day mistakes, but by the positives that will be there now and in the future. You can do that Coach.. you've done it before and we were there.

  17. Haven't felt this disgusted since George Marshall claimed the lights blurred out the freaking ball! Yes, I dug up a dead horse to kick.. We should just use the rest of this season to get D. Smitty pretty for 2016. But since we wont..
