  1. Last word was that we have no clue about any of it yet, but we dont usually hear anything until the season is close. As it turns out, a new QB has emerged in summer workouts.

    Yes, EMMITT JACKSON has stepped into the starting role as QB for the Mean Green offense. Here are some of the Q&A's from the press conferrence;

    Opening statement:

DD: "This is a great day for North Texas Football. I'm proud to announce that Emmitt Jackson has agreed to walk on to the Mean Green program as a quarterback, and will play a significant role this season. He will continue to work his shift at the Dallas Police Department, at least for a couple of weeks. I expect him to be game ready by LSU.

Reporter: Coach Dickey, The scouts and coaches for your upcoming opponents were expecting to see Joey Byerly or Daniel Meager under center. How does this change their approach so close to the season, and will this affect the defenses other teams have been working on?

DD: Well this will really throw some of them off. Preparation is the key to success. EJ will run out there to take the snap, and the LSU defensive coordinator will yell something like..."24 snap...blitz, uh?, who the hell is that guy?"

Reporter: Coach, there are rumors that Emmitt has been seen drinking before games the past few seasons...does this worry you?

DD: I think Emmitt Jackson is a good fit for this team, but I'm a little concerend about his alcohol consumption levels..of course. He is an active-duty police officer, which makes him a great guy and that says a lot about him. I havent seen him with alcohol, but all those stories must have some truth. I've talked to him, and feel he can control the amount of beer he drinks... I'm not so sure about the Jack Daniels.

Reporter: Do you think signing Emmitt could be considerred a distraction to the progress of the other, younger QB's?

DD: I dont think his play could be considerred a distraction, but his drinking habits could be a negative influence on some of the other players? I just got the team over getting hammered in New Orleans once a year, and now they will want to go drink with Emmitt on weekends. His leadership is unquestioned, and his ability to make plays is a neccessity..but I really dont want the team to see him dry-heaving at practice.

Reporter: What changes would you have to make in this offense to work with Emmitt's strengths and weaknesses?

DD: I guess I will ask the center to direct-snap the ball to Cobbs or Jamario when EJ feels sick, which would take the burden of calling cadances off his shoulders. I might have done that anyway this year, so no real concern there... Emmitt will never volutarily come out of a game...we know that. I would rather have Emmitt tell us when he needs a break, but we have a system worked out for that. When he doubles over, or starts talking about the greatness of Barry Manillow, he's either hurt or dilusional...we snap to Jamario.

Reporter: You've expressed concerns about the team not taking practices as seriously as they have in the past. Do you think that is the case with Emmitt in there?

DD:Well, I dont know if that's the case?..The atmosphere is better with Emmitt in there...no question. But, his drinking does leave him open to some extra ribbing from the team. I hear players laughing in the huddle when Emmitt yells "who's ringing the cowbell?" I dont usually allow laughing in the huddle...I mean not usually. For summer workouts...it's not such a bad thing.

Reporter:Emmitt looks to have real ability..and is impressive in the two minute drill. How do you think he is coming along?

DD: These are just summer workouts with no pads.. My coaches are working with him everyday, and he shows a natural ability to move this offense. I cant say I like hearing him yell "Not so loud coach"..and put his hands over his ear holes when we send plays in from the sidelines? I'm not sure how we handle that one yet..maybe hand signals.

Reporter: We all know Emmitt is a competitor and winner. Will he play only QB, or do you have other positions in mind for him?

DD: Emmitt is a natural leader, and has some speed. I may also use him as a punt returner. We asked Muzzy to work with him on that one, but Zach kept saying something about how much easier this would be if the guy was sober? I dont think Emmitt was at full speed yet. We will continue to work on it...

Reporter: Some of the media following this story have heard Emmitt talking smack to a few defensive players.. Do you think this is a part of his competitive nature, or is he just getting the team fired up?

DD: I'm not really sure yet. The good side is the respect he gets from his offensive teammates. The bad side is the defensive players are asking if he has life insurance before each workout? Emmitt is going to trash talk.. and I have talked to him about rememberring how big TJ Raymond really is. It is not smart to pick on some guys.

Reporter: When do you draw a line and pull back on the trash talk during workouts?

DD: When T.J. Covington looks over at me and says "I cant believe he freakin said that?"....We may need to back things off a bit. Emmitt understands that we are all on one team out there. He just gets caught up in the moment.

Reporter: How is the QB battle and lineup looking for the start of fall practices?

DD: We will go into the fall practices with Emmitt as the starter, and let the others battle it out. Should "Big Show" Byerly or Meager step up, then I'm sure Emmitt would want what is best for the team.

Cobbs left, Jamario right, post to Quinn. I think

Reporter: What did Emmitt say when you approached him to play this year?

DD: Emmitt actually came to us. He has been weighing the options each year, and every year he got closer to doing it. He did ask me if he could have a DVD player in his locker to watch "Dave Chappelle" episodes. I'm still not sure what that is all about, so I'm reluctant to go with it. We'll see when the season if off and running.

Disclaimer: the preceeding post was brought to you by an exceedingly long off-season. If this had been an actual press conference..most of us would be panicking.

  2. Thanks Deb... Fireworks at Fouts was really good! Nice also to see highlights of both J-Mo and Patrick Cobbs on the scoreboard. Hank MC'd, and gave another plug for NT football.

Not quite time for kickoff, but felt good to be back in the stands and have Mean Green Football up on the tron...

  3. Arrogance, or ignorance? I think WKU may have to re-think their bargaining power a bit. Last I checked, they didnt storm the NCAA's in basketball, and they are not much of a powerhouse in any other arena? I wonder what genius made Wood Selig the AD, and he doesnt seemed concerend about ANYTHING? If the move was important enough to the university to consider a consultant. then the AD should take it a bit more seriously. Selig has to be the "Forrest Gump" of AD's...

For the few out there who have not yet jumped on the Rick Villareal band wagon... this is why we love the guy.

  4. North Texas is always down there in rankngs. Winning doesnt seem to be enough nowdays.. you have to be successful against non-sunbelt teams, and be in a BCS conference. It's not like we are unrealistic..we are not expecting to be in the top ten, but #93rd????

This year will be a good one for us... Whe really cares where we are ranked in June?

    (Uh, ok....I do)

  5. Funny stuff... Korona Henderson has my vote for FB. That kid just loves to hit. I think "Big-Mac" could play Free safety, but there is the speed and conditioning thing? He could play receiver, but I think he might end up opposite little Gary Obure in practice...can anyone say "Get up, Gary?". Not worth the loss of another player. I wonder if Big Mac can deep snap? He is a good guy, and needs to find a place to play, at least until he is hurt in week two...

All joking aside...Big Mac just needs to stay healthy. If he could come in around 245-ish...he could contribute. I think Coach Dickey has a plan for him. He just needs to walk around for more than two months without straining or tearing anything?

  6. You sat in the wrong place, Deb.. I have been in lower section E for years, an we scream for most of the game? You should hear FFR? Anyway, the lower section of E is greatness. I didnt see or hear a church section anywhere down there? There was one game last year where a guy asked Emmitt to sit down, but we just kept doing what we were doing.. and that was the only time I have ever heard that.

Come down where we are and I think you get a different look. You'll have to dodge tortillas when we score...but I have had to dodge worse at OU.

  7. Most of us didnt know the helmet-script was coming until the team ran out of the locker room for that first game.. You should have heard the place when the team ran out... We were absolutely shocked. You could hear people yelling "What the HELL...MET?" I figured there was a reason for waiting so long to show us the new helmets... fear for their lives maybe? Regardless...the script did grow on us, as Rick V. predicted.

Maybe this is the same kind of thing.. I just hope the nightmares dont last as long this time.

  8. You guys have a great team, that's for sure. Glad we could help. Now that the pleasant stuff is out of the way... Welcome to the SBC tournament in OUR HOUSE!!! You're going down like a Rosanne Barr centerfold...UGLY, UGLY, UGLY!!!!!

(man, what an image that leaves ya with?????..........Sorry, no one deserves that)

GMG!!! By the way, we still want your football stadium. How about if we beat you in march, we get it. If we lose, you can have ours....(talk about a win-win for us????)

  9. Smack talk is heating up....about time.

    Predicted soundbite from N.O. 2004:

"2nd and 8 from the 36 yard line...Almond steps in behind center replacing Jeremy Young, who still seems to be loopy from the hit by Awasome. Almond sends Courington in motion right with Moore in the backfield. There's the snap...Almond is rolling right. It looks like a QB keeper up the right sidleing.... Almond at the 40...gets a block and GETS BLASTED at the 44 by Jonus Buckles!!! The BALL IS OUT!!!....and is picked up by T.J. Covington at the 45!!!!...Covington on the move now at the 40....running right at the 35 and gets a MONSTER BLOCK from Mendoza at the 30!!...Covington at the 25...20......15......10........5.....and T.J. will score a MEAN GREEN TOUCHDOWN!!!! A fumble return scores after a huge hit by Buckels, then Covington goes the distance to give the Mean Green a 27-10 lead!!! Covington with the SECOND defensive touchdown of the day! The first, an interception return by Phillip Graves on a batted-ball from Young, and now a fumble return by T.J. Covington after a huge hit by Jonus Buckles on Dustin Almond..It's starting to look like Jamario Thomas will be competing with his own defense for the scoring title in this game... "

  10. DD has always said that the team and the fans are separate, but equal. He knows the team needs us, and is happy when we are at ANY game to support them. He has always been a bit "thin-skinned" after a few losses. Who likes getting that kind of criticism??? I know I dont.

The bottom line is we hear what DD is saying, but as Alums and fans...we also know he is happy that we were there for those seniors last night.

  11. One of the recruits is a LB. I thought his dad said from Arlington. He was wearing an OSU (Ok. State) cap, so Emmitt and I suspected he may already have his mind made up. I also talked to a recruit and his dad downstairs (Keith?), and they are considerring North Texas very seriously. He plays TE/FB now, but thinks he will be a fullback in college. They were very nice and said good things about Darrell Dickey. The tortilla thing really threw them for a loop, but they were warned about it before the game. Keith said he got to meet Mean Joe Green at the tail-gate, and that was a huge deal for him. I have to wonder how a fullback is looking at his place in the offense, while Jamario Thomas is running down the field? Must make you want to block for a runner like that, I would think. Jamario may be a huge talent magnet for us!!!!

  12. [" What exactly about his employment status needs to be evaluated? He claims to be God, slaps students, threatens to kill them, and writes "911 now" on the chalkboard...are they holding out hope that he was just kidding or is it necessary for your head to spin while the bed levitates before they'll fire you?"]...posted by emmitt01.

I cant believe the students waited as long as they did to contact security? At North Texas a Professor can strike a student in class, and will probably get his a$$ whipped. Of course, the profanity thing is not that unusual... I hear unbelievable things at Fouts Field on 3rd and long....

  13. We should go a easy on Kevin Moore. He is a good running back, but not a great running back. Just an opinion, but we dont need him to be great. He does a good job of holding on to the ball and getting yards when called on. He is not going to break 50 and 60 yard runs game after game, but I'm on board with him when we need short yardage and ball control. He is also a decent receiver out of the backfield. Running backs like Jamario Thomas dont just come along everyday. Texas A&M wanted this guy bad, and we can see why. North Texas had another guy with this talent level a couple of years ago (Michael Ruff) and that didnt work out. ( I felt like crying...)

We seem to be getting more and more talented players these days. We have another guy with serious skill coming on next year at DT, and believe it or not Isaac Thomas will be just as impressive on the defensive line. I saw him tear up the best talent that Oklahoma could put out there in the All-Star game, and most of those OL's were going to the Big-XII or the SEC. Thomas went through them like they werent even there....no joke. Imagine Brandon Kennedy with a mean streak???

Bowl game or not this year, I fell very good about our future!!!!

    GMG!!! wink.gif
