  1. Game announcer at SMU was terrible. Names were wrong all night? (Brock Strickler and Toby Nawigay) I'm sure Josh Maldonado was happy though... he apparently made about 5 tackles at linebacker. Not bad for a RB who doesnt play defense? It's all good... next game is at home. I could care less about the SMU announcer.

Bring on Schnelly and the Owls... let's see if Danny Meager can throw for 700.

  2. Some of you guys are pathetic. You should win a ballgame you score 31 points in. How about giving DM a little credit? The guy played his ass off.

There it is...the voice of reason. THANK YOU. Danny played one of the best games I have ever seen by a NT QB. I dont know what we do about the panic at the end of the game, but he showed me he has talent and heart... I admit I am also a Vizza backer, but you cant lay last night on Danny Meager. He played his ass off and laid everything he had on that SMU defense.

I'll take that QB ANY day!

Banks, Green and UNT's situation heading to SMU

The North Texas fan you would most like to come to your rescue in a burning building -- FirefightinRick -- posed a pretty good question today.

What the heck happened to Ajani Banks?

Banks, a mountain of an offensive lineman, is still with the team. Unfortunately, he is one of a few players who have taken a freefall down the Mean Green's depth chart.

Banks is with the scout team and isn't on the travel roster for this weekend's game against SMU. UNT defensive back Dominique Green is another player in the same situation. Both could be impact players, but have dropped off the depth chart after not being at their best at the beginning of fall practice.Needless to say, it's not good news for the Mean Green, which could really use some help at cornerback and offensive line.

UNT appeared as if it would be stronger at cornerback with Green, Latif Nurudeen, Antoine Bush and Evyn Roman this season. Nurudeen, Bush and Roman all struggled against OU. Nurudeen appears to have the most potential of the bunch, but was pulled early against the Sooners after making a few key mistakes. Don’t be surprised if freshman Kevin Ealey gets more of an opportunity this week.

That's great...just great. I know there are young offensive linemen who will eventually step up and play well, but what about the corner? Defense will make or break this team until the new offense starts to click. You wont find a nicer guy than Evan Roman, but fact is fact. ER at corner makes for a noticeable mis-match. SMU would be crazy not to exploite it. (since they will have looked at the OU game-film, you can bet they are already practicing the quick-outs and fly routes to ER's side) I'm not trying to pick on the kid... he has quickness that will be great on return teams. I just dont want us to get beat up by those SMU receivers. I'll never hear the end of it...

I think it's time to face reality and just say it... "Come back Woody!..we need ya!!! Yes, you're going to play defensive back, but have a good year and you could get drafted!!". Think of the NFL money you could make!!! (for the record, I dont know how DB's are rated, but this year a DB from BUFFALO went in the 6th round? ANYTHING is possible?)

    Help us Woody, Help us!!!

  4. Wow, lots of interesting opinions... I simply see that game for what it was. (those of us who were there discussed some good signs from the game as well)

OU is a National Championship contender, and we have a BRAND NEW offensive and defensive scheme. As RV mentioned in the tailgate party, this will take time. ANY knee-jerk reaction based on what we saw at OU is pre-mature. The way to judge a team is to wait until you have seen them jell, then compare them to their oponents. How long will that take with these guys?, I'm not sure... but I do know we match up with SMU a HELL of a lot better than a National Champ contender. Give these guys a chance to prove Todd Dodge right. As we watch each game we will see improvement, and the spread offense will work. As for the argument for who is in the saddle at QB?, I have to admit there is a point to be made for Vizza. Still, I will back whoever gets the job because I have to trust that Dodge knows what he is doing. As for the Evan Roman question... I was as surprised as anyone he was left out there? I think he is probably going to make his mark here as a kick-returner. But, we will know more on Saturday at SMU.

It's only one loss, guys...We went 0-5 once and still made it to New Orleans. Stay on the band-wagon people. Please dont use this loss as a reason to jump off. The biggest change for me from what we had last year is potential. After a 79-10 blowout, I still have faith in this season. Bring on the Ponies and their 20,000 fans who showed up for the OPENING DAY game AT HOME? I couldnt believe how many empty seats there were in that place. Let's not become that because of a loss at OU?

    See everyone at McFarland saturday...

  5. 2010 is also when UNT hosts Kansas State.

I heard the interview live yesterday. Good stuff from TD about the winning attitude. I was also surprised that he expects to open the season in 2010 in a new stadium? I got the impression from RV that we were no-where close to that happening so soon? Still, a good interview. I did think it was a bit of a cheap shot for them to ask Todd Dodge if Southlake Carroll could have beaten NT last year? TD said "Uh?, no..."

  6. Patrick Cobbs (Dolphins), Adrian Awasome (Giants), Cody Spencer (Jets), and Brad Kassell (Jets) are all good through the first wave of cuts. I dont see Brad and Cody being cut as they are both backups at LB, but I think the cut to 53 will be close for AA and PC. I noticed also that Johnny Quinn still does not show on the Saints roster, nor does Dylan Lineberry show on the skins roster? Hopefully all goes well with our guys.

Anyway, good luck to all former NT players on the final cuts. They've made it this far... keep battling!

  7. Nothing like a monsoon in Norman to start the season? I did think it was funny the last two games there that it rained so hard the steps between the seats looked like waterfalls! You dont see that on TV...you have to be there!

Also, Good idea Rick... I'll bring a change of clothes AND A TOWEL this time.

  8. Caddy Shack..

Judge Smails: "I know it's hard for young people, Danny... I see them in my court room everyday. I dont want to sentence them to the gas chamber?... I feel I OWE it to them."

    Airplane 2:

Lawyer: "Doctor, have you had a chance to talk to Mr. Stryker?"

    Doctor: "yes, I have"

Lawyer: "Can you give us your impression of Mr. Stryker?"

Doctor: " I dont do impressions, I'm a Clinical Psychologist"

    Lawyer: "of course..."

  9. Surprised???

This isn't what many board members, including myself, initially believed.

I really though Vizza would take the reins right around conference time.

Here is an HSO...If we don't see Vizza this season, we may never see him.

I was thinking the same thing, Matt. Riley Dodge gets here next year, and Meager will enterring his senior season. So Vizza doesnt play this year, which makes the odds that he beats out Meager (Senior in 08) very slim. I'm glad Danny gets his shot... he's earned it. However, I dont see Vizza sitting the bench for two years here when he could be starting somewhere else? It sure is great to have a back-up with Giovanni's skills, but he said it himself. He didnt come here to be a backup, and Vizza is just too talented to sit for that long. I think we see Danny Meager for the next two years and then we get the Riley Dodge show.

    Just an opinion... fire away.

  10. Kartey Agbottah: Playing his first year of Safety, this ball-hawking DB will control the secondary space like seasoned veteran. The former Irving-MacArthur standout will pair up with Aaron Weathers to become the most feared Mean Green Safety tandem since Craig Jones and Jonus Buckles.

Okay, that's probably expecting too much, but why not? Anyway I have to be right on one of these predictions? I'm still catcing it for the "Isaac Thomas - All-American" thing. (for the record, I have not given up on Isaac Thomas... he still has this year show everyone what he is made of. I've seen it, and I believe this will be the year everyone else sees it)

  11. Section 35, row 15, seats 21 and 22. I hope it does not monsoon on us again this year as it has the last two trips to Norman. As we have a NEW coach, NEW QB, and NEW offense... maybe we can get NEW weather? Then again, I'll happily take the old weather if we can get a NEW final score...

  12. Many teams across the country close practices to fans, so not sure what the big deal is other than we are not used to this. I understand pissing and moaning about the first scrimmage since it was such a clusterfrick, but this time to many fans are pissing and moaning as if someone stole their favorite toy.

I think that is really an accurate look at this. We were certainly spoiled with Darrell Dickey as the head coach. He wanted us attending practices and scrimmages, and considerred that important. Regardless of how DD's tenure ended, I liked being on the field with the players during practices and scrimages. Of course Todd Dodge brings several changes with him, and they will all probably all pay off. I think going from having total access to no-access is my beef. If everyone really thinks this is okay, then I'll buy it too. I wont like it, and I cant share practices and scrimmages with my son... but we have another team to go watch until the season starts? All will be okay... I just have to adjust.

Sorry for the topic hi-jack. Go Mean Green on September 1st!!!..hehe

    GMG!!! :)

  13. This is Coach Dodge's program and if he only wants player's parents at Saturday practice then that is the way it is. As dedicated football freeks that some of you are you will have to get your "high" somewhere else on Saturday before the season begins.

Perhaps you, medpilot, and ffr can take his cannon in the country and shoot squirels for the next two Saturdays. :D

Haha, not much of a hunter... even with a cannon. I guess we're going to Ford to watch SMU scrimmage. Better than no football I guess?

    Okay Emm, I'm in.

    GMG!!!

  14. WR Korey Washington, a starter when spring practice ended, practiced for the first time Monday after finishing required summer school coursework. DE Eddrick Gilmore and WW have yet to practice.

Scrimmage Saturday closed except for family of players.

Okay, new coach... new offense.... new rules. I get it. BUT, I dont think taking the dedicated fans and Alums away from the team completely helps our cause? If we only wanted to see OUR team on game-days... we would all be UT fans or Aggies. The great thing about being a Mean Green Alum is being part of the plan...not seperated from it? Emmitt posted a thread about going to watch SMU play their scrimmage on Sat. SMU???, and he is one of the most dediacted Mean Green Alums we have? I know we are all desperate for football, but this is getting ridiculous. Rick V. said he would right this ship, and hiring Todd Dodge is a huge step in that process. I'm not sure keeping Fans and Alums away from the practices and scrimmages is a good thing? At least give us as much time with them as the SMU fans are getting with their team? (My God this sounds like a custody battle?)

RV, please dont remove the dedicated supporters of this program from being a part of this process? The players love hearing us cheer for them when they make a good play, or get a big hit. I asked Don McGee once if the fans were a distraction to the players in practice?, an he told me they feed off of us and work a little harder. We DO make a difference out there.

No more whining, just please let us support OUR team... yes, they are OURS.

    GMG!!!

  15. I don't undertand how anyone can still criticise our QB's from last year and the year before. DM was thrown to the wolves when Joey Byerly failed out of school in '05. DM missed that entire spring due to a shoulder injury and was forced to learn on the fly that august, and still nursing the shoulder. His postion coach was concerned about ONE thing, himself. When things went bad, it was the players fault, never his or the head coaches. When giving instruction it was cussing, screaming, criticising and finger pointing at the players. When it got even worse, his head coach would walk away yelling to himself that it was the players fault. Still, DM was asked to come in behind a very watered down line and had the hell beat out of him all season long. The next year, in '06 it got even worse with the rediculous three man rotation and a two, entirely different O line rotation.

How is it that any QB, DM, Phillips or WW could be held accountable today with that kind of dysfuntion?

    Rick

EXACTLY...thanks Rick. I've been saying the same things myself. As much as I liked Darrell Dickey, and still do... he was responsible for RF's actions and failures. I believe the retention of Flannigan as OC was one of DD's biggest mistakes / regrets. No one should judge playing ability based on taht offensive fiasco from Flanny's last year. Give all the guys a fair shot under TD. The right guy will win the job...

Now, if we could just attend practices or scrimmages to SEE who is winning the job?????????

    GMG!!! <_<

  16. Seeing as I can't pass up college football if it's being played within 200 miles of my house and I'm able to go I am gonna go scout the ponies at their game against Tech. I don't wanna go into the lion's den alone though, so who's coming with me?

The goldfish is coming with me...who else?

Am I reading the schedule right?... played on Monday the 3rd at 4:00? I would love to go watch Vinny play, but a 4:00 kickoff in that part of Dallas on a Monday? The traffic will be horrific! There is hardly any parking as it is? What were they thinking? This one will be tough to pull off, but we have a growing tradition of watching SMU get beat in their house every year. I dont know if Texas Tech is as good as advertised, but we will get to see Graham Harrell run an offense similar to ours?. I might be interested in that? (It has to be better than the SMU- Baylor game we sufferred through?) It also gives me a chance to worship Ramon Flannigan while standing under his banner. The guy was truly a mis-understood genius!!!!

I'll see what I can do.

    GMG!!!
