This isn't their first rodeo.  They knew what the attendance was projected to be.  This group has been through big games at Apogee before....

Just like every other industry, I’d bet the answer is simple: staffing troubles.

and I’ll bet they’re fixing it by pulling people from other departments to work on game day.

I never know how much faith to put in ranking services.  However, we actually did well in the portal compared to our CUSA mates according to 247Sports.  Apparently they re-evaluate these periodically.  When I posted these in August, we were number 1 in CUSA and Western was ranked 4th.  So between then and now, Western jumped over 3 teams to take over the #1 spot.  In the end, however, it only matters how these transfer player help the team win and that story hasn't been written yet.

I’d be interested to know how the portal is reevaluated over time in these rankings. Could it be as simple as playing time? For example, a team desperate for help would theoretically be higher in the rankings because their transfers are playing more.

  3. I looked over our recruiting rankings for the past 5 seasons, we only have one class that would have been in the top half in the AAC in that particular year. And we have not done well in the portal at all.

This is my biggest complaint about Littrell and his staff. I think they are good football coaches. I think more often than not they do more with less. But the recruiting has been bad with no light at the end of the tunnel.

  4. Gunnell didn’t look good in his snaps either, though.

I wasn’t watching closely enough to know if he was getting time with the 1’s though.

Should be a fun game on Saturday because a ton of young guys get to play.

And as for the theme of the thread in general, I will watch every second of UNT football I can. We’re only guaranteed 12 of these games a year - and the off-season is loooooong. Win, lose or draw, I’ll be interested.

Y’all still aren’t seeing the point of this.

Firing a head coach mid season is not worth it, but if y’all want to see a disaster, let’s have SL fired.

I understand this line of thinking - but what is the difference between a disaster (let’s say 3-4 wins) or 6 wins if the end result means firing the coach regardless?

Fire the coach, standard message board fare after every loss.

There is next to no chance, Littrell is going to get fired during the season.

It solves nothing, but further muddles the season.

I believe most think that it is up to Littrell and team to determine his future.  I think he will have to win 7 games or finish very strong to return next year.

Agreed. The fanbase should take solace in knowing a decision will be made once the season ends - you cannot allow a coach to work on a one year deal (going into 2023).

The more I read and think on it, the more I’m convinced there will be a parting of ways regardless of the win/loss record. But we shall see.

  7. Neal Brown would be near the top of my list if West Virginia fires him at the end of the year.

Alex Golesh, Tennessee’s Offensive Coordinator, would be an interesting candidate. Plenty of experience in the AAC.

Matt Mattox, UTSA’s OC/OL coach would be another under the radar candidate.

    Matt Mumme, Colorado State OC.

    Garrett Riley, SMU OC.

That is a really defeatist take.

UNT has the resources, facilities, and infrastructure to be competitive in the AAC and the top end of the G5.  As previously cited schools like App State, UTSA, San Diego State, etc. have achieved success in football with less advantages than UNT.

SMU is an anomaly and probably shouldn't be the bar but it doesn't mean UNT can't be a 8 plus win program consistently.  There is probably no school in the country better positioned to thrive in the transfer/NIL world than SMU.

It’s not a defeatist take - we’re essentially saying the same thing. SMU is going to be at the top of the new AAC. That should look like 10 wins or so a year.

UNT is not close to that level right now - we should be winning 8 games in the CUSA, no doubt. But the gulf between the middle of CUSA and the middle of the AAC is wiiiide.

We’ve got to hire a coach who can recruit. It’s as simple as that.

But UTSA doesn’t have the funding either not near the facilities and yet they can hang with teams like UofH and win championships.  Give me a break with all that.

They’ve been on a good run, no doubt about it. Traylor is a great recruiter - something we sorely need. We’ll see where they stand once he gets a bigger job.

Again, I’m not taking a pro-Littrell stance. I think it’s very clear he’s on the hot seat and probably needs 7 wins to keep his job. I just think that’s very doable in this conference.

I tweeted this last night, but essentially I think the best case scenario is that we win 7-8 games this season and Littrell parlays that success into a low level P5 job. It’s clear Wren doesn’t think much of him otherwise he’d already have an extension.

Maybe it forced us to look

in the mirror and see where we really are.  Changes are needed.

SMU cannot be the bar for this program. We don’t have their funding. We don’t have their support levels. We don’t recruit the same athletes.

We’ve beaten them 6 times in 100 years.

I’m not suggesting changes don’t need to be made - I’m just saying the rest of the season will have more bearing on a coaching change than losing to a team playing a different sport than us.

  11. As with any coach on the hot seat, the results as they happen probably matter more than in a normal season.

What I mean is you probably can’t start 1-5 and expect to be given the leash to turn it around. And in that scenario, with an interim coach, the roster and fanbase will probably be checked out and we’ll be debating coaching candidates.

So to get to bowl eligibility, whether that means 6 wins or 9 wins, or whether it means Littrell is safe or he isn’t, we probably have to win early instead of winning late.

  12. 6-6

I think the offense will be very good, but I’m afraid the defense might be horrid given what we lost on the defensive line.

In my opinion, the early season schedule sets up pretty favorably even if you pencil in losses to UTEP and SMU.  FAU and LT at home lead me to believe 4-3 seems pretty realistic headed into UTSA. FIU and Rice to finish off the season should mean another year of bowl eligibility.

My guess would be Littrell gets fired and an interim coaches the bowl.

  13. From Richard Johnson at Sports Illustrated:

    ”North Texas

After back-to-back nine-win seasons, North Texas is 14–21 in the past three seasons. Seth Littrell, whose contract runs through the end of 2023, has undoubtedly raised the profile of the program. UNT is a G5 program willing to pay—Littrell’s salary is between $1.3 million and $1.8 million. Its location near the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex also makes it attractive for up-and-coming coaches. Some sources say Litrell missed his window by not selling high and making a jump to the Power 5 after his initial success.”

I can guarantee your that there's not a single person on this board who wouldn't eat crow, and gladly, if SL became the man we needed and started excelling.

But, come on man... Is this the UNT football you really want to watch? Truth and facts are that we we are barely mediocre.

To flip your narrative... Some people have decided to bury their heads and disregard the, very very many, negatives.

Oh, I’m not super positive either. But I think Littrell tenure has been miles better than the two decades before it and any outcome is realistic this season. We’re pretty average but this conference is bad. Anywhere from 5 to 9 wins is a realistic outcome and I would prefer to let it play out instead of assuming the worst.

If we win 8 or 9, Littrell gets an extension and we feel pretty good going into the AAC.

If we win 5 or 6, we’re coach shopping with the biggest wallet we’ve ever had.

I’m just excited to get started.

That assessment is such a huuuuge stretch given our history. You could very well say we have two incapable QBs with our performance in recent years.

At what point have we shown quality and consistent QB play???

I don’t know. I have faith that Bennett has improved the defense - so the top two QBs performing well against them in camp should be seen as a positive development.

I also think the offense found something worth continuing with Aune and the running game to end last season. So while I don’t expect him to be a great passer, I do expect the offense to be somewhat efficient.
