  1. Have any Dentonites received a copy with their paper this morning? I don't have a subscription, but I've been to several different newsstands, and  the football magazine has been mysteriously missing from each and every issue. I even called the newspaper to inquire, and they informed me that it is scheduled to be released tomorrow. Can anyone provide further information?

  2. The Denton Sam's Club at Rayzor Ranch has a large table full of North Texas merchandise for sale. I saw several different styles of golf shirts, zip-up jackets, and hooded sweatshirts that were all very reasonably priced. The entire display is set up near the front entrance. Right next to all the checkout lanes. You can't miss it.

  3. I went by the stadium store again today to get another helmet for a friend, and they were already sold out! That makes 40 mini and 10 full-size replica helmets sold in only a day and-a-half!! Maybe that's sufficient enough evidence to show university administration that there's demand enough for a worm to fly again in North Texas. Here's hoping that we see the "Flying Worm" on the field again very soon!

P.S. The supervisor at the stadium store assured me that they've already ordered plenty more helmets, and that they should be arriving back on shelves as soon as next week.

  4. Just stopped by the stadium store to pick up my own. I also inquired how many of each they had in stock. They ordered 10 of the full-size and 40 of the mini helmets. But, they've already sold a few and they were taking phone orders while I was there. I was told that they'd order more as needed, but you'd better hurry on in if you'd like to get one from the first batch!

  5. Great post @SilverEagle! I think your point about traditional rivalries also relates to another common element of college football rivalries, which is the geographical relationship between schools. In the earliest days of college football, the logistical difficulties associated with long distance travel confined most schools to play within a limited geographical region. During that time (and mostly prior to World War II), North Texas played East Texas State and Southwest Texas State, twenty-six and twenty-nine times each. It was only natural that we developed grudges against our most familiar opponents of that era. Later, when advancements in technology began to allow easier travel across larger distances, these "regional limitations" on football play naturally began to lessen. Then, one year after the NCAA first created divisions in 1956, North Texas joined the Missouri Valley Conference, began play at the University Division level, and left behind many of the traditional rivalries from their Lone Star Conference and Gulf Coast Conference days. That being said, It is my own personal opinion that there exists more than enough historical precedence for a legitimate in-state rivalry with SMU. And, if you go for the "border war" scenario created between schools in states adjacent to one another, why not rivalries with New Mexico State and Arkansas State? Each school has been our most frequent opponent since we began, and then re-began, play at the Division I level. If familiarity truly breeds contempt, then there's definitely a case for these three schools.

  6. Uhh....

The helmets in the video WERE the La Tech game helmets. We aren't getting new black helmets. Just new green sparkle paint ones to match the new uniform color and a new SOW sticker with a black outline.

You sir, are 100% correct. I didn't see the familiar center stripe at first glance, and thought they might be sporting a slightly different black helmet this year. But, after watching the video even more closely, I completely concur. They are the exact same helmets. Thanks for pointing that out!

  7. So, I've been thinking a lot about this. I believe the one thing that all great sports rivalries have in common is tradition. This is especially true in college football, where all of the best rivalries have been built upon decades-and-decades of history. Army and Navy have played 115 times since 1890. Michigan and Ohio State have played 110 times since 1897. Texas and Oklahoma have played 109 times since 1900. Notre Dame and USC have played 86 times since 1900. Alabama and Auburn have played 79 times since 1893. The list goes on. Following that line of thinking, I started to wonder if there was any basis for determining an historical rival for UNT. To that end I decided to list all of our opponents, from three significant time periods, and put them in order by total number of games played. Please click on the links below to review the results. Is there enough evidence to support any historic rivalries?

  8. I realize that Texas State has only been playing at the Division I-FBS level since 2012, but since then, both programs actually have the exact same number of wins (seventeen). And yes, Coach McCarney and his staff currently earn higher salaries, but it's not unreasonable to suggest that changes if Dennis Franchione continues to guide his team to an improved record each year. I don't know if this comparison has ever been made before, but I was really quite surprised by the results.

  9. Some of you may resent any comparison made to lowly Southwest Tex... er... Texas State, but the below numbers may suggest that we now have an in-state FBS doppelganger as well.

  10. I remember SMU game tickets being listed in the season ticket package. I can't recall if the tailgate was mentioned as well. Does anyone recall this? I would have paid for both at the time if it was listed like that.

I believe that season ticket holders can review purchases online from their "Tickets and Mean Green Club" account. From the home page, click on the "Manage My Tickets" link to see an event calendar displaying all of your current ticket purchases. There should be an entry for "SMU Tailgate Event" on September 12, if you've already made payment for that event.

  11. That's certainly a better deal than the $95 package on the ticket site.  Thanks for the info.  Did they indicate what the tailgate entails?

I don't know for sure, but I think that food and drink will be provided. At least, I believe that was the case last year in Austin. I honestly don't know for certain.

  12. You may but tickets to both the game and the tailgate apart from the packages listed.  I did just that as I am already a Mean Green Club member.  I believe my tailgate ticket was $25.  There is a pre-sale price and an "at the door price".  The at the door price will be higher.  I recommend you contact the UNT ticket office and purchase your game tickets and tailgate tickets in advance.  Saves you some cash that way.

I called the North Texas Ticket Office today, and they confirmed that what Mark said earlier was absolutely correct. You can buy tickets to the game and/or tailgate event directly from them without the need to purchase any special promotional package. These tickets can be bought either together or separately. Current Mean Green Club members will need to pay $20 and $35, for admission to the tailgate and game, respectively. Non-Mean Green Club members will be required to pay an additional $10 for admission to the tailgate event.

  13. Just wondering if anyone on this message board can provide additional details regarding the SMU Tailgate Event that is currently being promoted by the Mean Green Online Ticket Office. The description from the website reads:

$95 Tickets & Tailgate Package, 2 Endzone Tickets, 2 Tailgate Tickets, Spiriki Mean Green Club Membership

$135 Tickets & Tailgate Package, 2 Sideline Tickets, 2 Tailgate Tickets, Spiriki Mean Green Club Membership

I'm trying to find out which sections these tickets are being culled from, and whether or not the Mean Green Club will be hosting the tailgate again this year. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  14. Most fans seem to have forgotten (or not heard of) Ja'Quay, but he was our all time leading rushing (3,120 YDS) when graduated.  Then we run into an incredible run of backs, and first Patrick Cobbs (4,050) and then Jamario Thomas (3,496) and then Lance Dunbar (4,224) passed him.

You won't hear any argument from this fan. If you were to throw in Kevin Galbreath's 2,417 yards from 2001-02, you'd not only have the top five career rushing leaders in program history, but an unbroken line of quality runners, stretching all the way from 1997-2013. That's nearly two straight decades of excellence at the running back position!

  15. What people forget is that LT's record-seeting game against UTEP came a week after TCU beat us and our defense held him to just over 100 yards, which was really saying something. LT was amazing and his TCU teams were damn good. But we had a defense that could play. Unfortunately, our gameplan for that game involved running the ball about 95% of the game and the only time we scored was when we had a fake punt get us into FG territory. Otherwise, the UNT crowd chants of "THROW THE BALL" really showed our frustration with Dickey's offensive gameplan in games against non-SBC opponents, which was just get it over with as soon as possible so we don't lose by 60.

If I'm not mistaken, we did hold Tomlinson to less than one hundred yards during that game. In fact, I think he finished with only 75. It seems like both teams were content to just run it, and run it, and run it that day. The big difference was their ability to make the pass when it really counted. My hat goes off to a defensive unit that ranked near the very bottom of the country against the run, but still played tough enough to get the job done against a player of that caliber. No offense to four year letterwinner Ja'Quay Wilburn, but Ladainian Tomlinson was special. Considering the number of quality lineman that we had throughout those years (Phillip Armour, J.R. Randle, and Nick Zuniga come to mind.), I can't help but wonder what might have been.
