  1. Right now Applewhite would be 5th on my list behind Fritz, Withers, Babers, and Thomsen.  The only knock is that he has no HC experience.  He should be really interested considering his familiarity with Texas and desire to be a HC.

Fritz (7-2 at GS) is making just over 500,000 and so is Babers (8-2 at BG).  They are longshots at best but both have strong Texas ties.

Withers (8-2 at JM) is making about 350,000.  He might be a possiblity.

Thomsen as an OC should be interested since he has strong Texas ties and has been an HC in Texas.

  2. Between Fritz, Withers, Barbers, or Thomsen, Thomsen should be the easiest to get here.

The first 3 might bring half their staff with them and hit the ground running.

However, Thomsen has also been a very successful head coach and knows what to do in short order.

  3. Hayden Fry had a losing record at SMU before having a winning record here. One example of how you should factor in special circumstances in a coaches record.

I will concede there is an exception to every rule.

Fry went 5-5-1  his 1st season and 2-7-2 his second in the Missouri Valley Conference with loses to UT Arlington, Lamar, West Texas A&M, Long Beach State and ties with Drake and Wichita State.

I'm not sure in today's climate that he would be given the chance for a 3rd season.  After UNT got out of the MVC, he did have 4 really good years.

Hire a coach with a losing record who stumbles out of the gate like that today and see what happens.

After McCarney, try and sell another coach with a losing record to UNT fans and see how well that goes down.

  4. It's impressive to me because they were, essentially, in the same boat as us:  the little fish in a big pond where bigger fish.  And, the bigger fish were gobbling up the best recruits - FSU, Florida, Miami, and every SEC and ACC school you can name.  Yet, he got them bowl eligible twice, with a from scratch program and whatever table scrap recruits he could muster.

Miami could do much worse than hiring Cristobal.  Far worse.  Also, if he didn't have coaching talent, he would not be on Nick Saban's coaching staff.  He's an excellent coach, well respected among his peer, and grad of The U.  They'll do well to hire him - before UCF, Auburn, South Carolina, or someone else does.

Cristobal  led  FIU  to an overall record of 27-47,  and 3-9  in his  last year.after an 8-5 bowl season.

McCarney led UNT to an overall record of 22-32, and 4-13 in his last  year+ after a 9-4 bowl season.

By that standard Miami should hire McCarney.

I think either would be an excellent acquisition for Miami.

    I hate Miami.

  5. Gary Patterson was a coordinator before he took over TCU, Mike Leach was a coordinator before he went to tech. all 128 d1 head coaches were once Coordinators before someone took a chance on them.

Hire a young DC or OC if you must, but never hire a former HC with a losing record.

I promise you, if he can lose somewhere else he can and will lose here.

  6. I would like to see UNT hire a guy who has won everywhere he's been.

One who has a consistent track record as HC of winning regardless of the locale, the level, or the resources.

Dino Babers          34-15      0 losing seasons

Everett Withers     23-12      0 losing seasons

Willie Fritz             152-67    2 losing seasons (both 5-6 and both a number of years back)

Chris Tomsen       52-21      2 losing seasons (4-6 his 1st season & 10-3 his 3rd season but the NCAA vacated 10 wins)

  7. It's far more than just experience at winning. And it's not an exact science. There's a reason Notre Dame is paying people around $18 million NOT to coach their team.

And being about to recruit to a FCS school no more an accurate predictor of G5 success than experience at a P5. Every single situation is unique with it's very own set of positives and negatives for recruiting.

Current Notre Dame HC is Brian Kelly he went 118-35-2 with  2 titles in Divison 2 and went 53-22 as a G5 HC.

He now has ND at 8-1 and ranked 5th.  He's now 224-78-2 as a HC.  He has won at every level as HC.

Before him they hired Charlie Weis who was an OC but never a HC. He was 16-21 his last 3 seasons.   He;s now 41-49 as A HC.

Before him they hired Tyrone Williams who was 44-36-1 as HC of Stanford with 3 losing seasons and no other HC experience.

         He was 11-12 in his 2nd & 3rd seasons at ND.  He's now 76-88-1 as a HC.

Before him they hired Bob Davie who was an DC but never a HC.  He was fired after his 2nd losing season.  He's now 51-55 as a HC.

Moral: Hire a HC with multiple experiences as HC and won big at every level.

  8. Speaking of backup QBs, where is Dajon W?

Ex UNT RB Erick Evans has put together a string of good games. He had another long TD run of 58 yds today and also caught 5 passes..

It will be interesting to see what he does for the next 2 plus years.

  9. He was at Texas from 98-00.....

Yes, I will agree with you that hes won at both levels.

I'm not saying he's a bad coach, you just don't get the hype from the fan base that you would get from the other guys being mentioned.

My point is that this goes back to RV... He said he wants this and that but then and goes hire someone completely different.

He was at Texas from 1998-2000.  They had cars, airplanes, and TVs back then.  Most people even had phones and computers.

It's a moot point anyway because some P5 is going to snatch him up in short order.

  10. Withers is not the same as the other hires mentioned. (Hauck & Mac)

He does have Texas ties with 3 years at UT.

He has won at both the FBS and FCS levels.

He coached 7 years in the NFL, which gives him a lot of street cred with potential recruits and current players.

When he tries to recruit some really good DBs they are going to listen to what he has to say.

  11. If you were the AD who would you pick as the next head coach.    Pick one guy and make your case.

My pick would be Everett Withers.

He has coached in Texas.        3 years at UT

He has coached in the NFL.     6 years with the Tennessee Titans & before that 1 year with the Saints

He was DC for UNC from 2008-2011.

He became interim HC in June 2011 while UNC looked for a new HC.  He went 7-5 and took them to the Independence Bowl.

After UNC hired a permanent HC, he became assistant HC & DC at Ohio St. from 2012 (12-0) to 2013 (12-2).

He took a huge pay cut to become HC of James Madison in 2014.  It's reported that he makes about $325,000 down from the $585,000 he made at Ohio St.

So, he seriously wants to be a HC and at 52 he has another 15 years or so of coaching ahead.

He went 9-4 last year and is 7-2 this year at James Madison..

  12. Does anybody know why Everett Withers has moved around so much? We want somebody with experience but he seems to play hot potato when it comes to where he wants to be. Per Wikipedia:

    1988–1989Austin Peay (DC)
    1990Austin Peay (ST/WR)
    1991Tulane (assistant)
    1992–1993Southern Miss (assistant)
    1994New Orleans Saints (assistant)
    1995–1997Louisville (DC)
    1998–2000Texas (assistant)
    2001–2006Tennessee Titans (assistant)
    2007Minnesota (DC)
    2008–2010North Carolina (DC)
    2011North Carolina
    2012–2013Ohio State (DC)
    2014–presentJames Madison

His longest run somewhere was with the Titans as defensive back coach. Not many of his new jobs have really been promotions from the one(s) held before. For example, he was with the Saints for a year to then go to Louisville as defensive coordinator to then be a defensive backs coach at Texas. Defensive backs coach with the Titans to then be U Minnesota's DC for a year. It's a lot of hopping around.

We want somebody to view us a stepping stone, but it doesn't look like he's ever really used any program as a stepping stone.

In addition, he has a 23-12 HC record. Pretty good! But most of that is in the FCS. I feel like he doesn't have enough HC experience to make that even worth mentioning and this year marks the first time he has been HC at a program for 2 consecutive years...

1988-1997 it looks like he worked his way up to DC at Louisville, but they changed HCs in 1998 and he became an assistant at UT,  From there he coached 6 years in the NFL before he worked his way back up to DC and  then interim HC at UNC when they fired their coach.  He went 7-5 and lost a bowl game while they looked for a repacement.   He then became assistant HC-DC at Ohio St where they went 24-2.  Then HC at James Madison where he went 9-4 last year and 7-2 this year.

This guy should be given a serious look.

  13. I'm betting the TX H.S. coaching changes over the past 15-17 years render those connections near useless.  Now, if he were able to keep up while at UNC or OHSt, then maybe...  but I wouldn't bet on it.

Just because he was out of state coaching in the NFL for 6 years and was/is a winning HC at 2 different out of state schools shouldn't be held against him.

I would bet that some of the young assistant coaches he met while recruiting at UT are now head coaches, some head coaches are now Ads, etc.

I would imagine he can find his way around the state without much help.
