  1. Here's my two cents and why Chico did what he did.

We had nothing to play for.  Everyone can say we'll win for the seniors, blah blah blah.  Chico is a players coach.  In result, he'd going to let the players play, especially the qb's who he works with everyday.  If they win, well, thats just adds to the experience to them.  Utimatley, they didn't, Chico was probably most upset because one of his leaders got a major pentilty and another 15 yarder on top of it.  He's thinking, man, I'm putting the players in position to have a game winning drive but they just f'd it up like they've been doing all season.

Do I agree with my opinion about his decision... Eh.

Football players parents need to take after the Buyers, they get it.  We tailgate with them every game and we can talk about good Kenny and bad Kenny.

  2. I think LSU needs to make the tournament or JJ will have some serious issues.  He may survive anyway given his connections there (plus he somewhat satiated folks with last year's team), but he has a lot of talent this season.

Whats funny is that none of these players would have gone to LSU if it werent for JJ.

  3. According to reports- Meacham is RV's guy and Littrell is Prez guy

Prez had his own consulting firm do the work.. Looks like RV had a different plan.  They've never been on the same page from Day 1.  There's gotta be some sort of change with RV too, this all doesn't make sense.

Prez just made RV act like he was doing his job when he was just really keeping him busy.

  4. We aren't the University of Houston, for gripes sake. And we surely aren't UT or Alabama. He has no clue about what awaits him at UNT.

I would have rather seen Lincoln Reilly over these 3 or 4, to tell you the truth. At least he had a good couple of years at ECU before going to a P5.

Chris Tomasen is a much better candidate for what we need than any of these 3.

What makes you think Hermann would have been successful at UNT?

Stat for you. In 2011, a bad UNT team beat IU.  Their offense was ranked 91st in the nation.

Littell comes in 2012- Jumps to 51st, 2013 jumps to 25th and in 2014 (left) 81st.

Common factor- Wilson never left and he's considered one of the best OC's under Stoops.

If he can do that in Bloomington, I'm sure Littell could do the same in Denton

What UNT90 is omitting is the fact that we don't have a clear vision for the athletics program that lives up to what UNT is as 25 largest university in the country in a very large media market, with 237,000 local, and 29,000 undergraduate students.  Someone asked how money would it take to hire one those candidates UNT90 or I would want.  My answer is: if we can get $1,000 from just 15,000 (or just $500 from the same number of alumni) of the local alumni, I think we could afford just about anyone dare not hope to get right now.  If you didn't do the math we are talking about 7.5 million to 15 million.  With that kind of money you can hire coach at 2.5-5.0 million and hire some top notch assistants to come with him.  Like it or not when RV said we are minority he was right but he was talking about UNT fans in general. UNT fans are in the minority of population of people who have a connection with he school.  We can't even get 15% of those huge population numbers to sellout Apogee just once.  Those numbers don't mean nothing without leadership to unite them and set the vision.  The most valuable American sports franchise in the world has .500 record and 2 post season victories in 20 years and if you don't know what franchise I am referring to do a little research because it is very close to home.  Oh, by the way, how many post season wins does the Mean Green have in that same time period?... 2.  But I would bet my life  that of these 237,000 local alumni 90% have more of this pro teams merchandise than UNT's.

    How much are you donating?

  5. Because any of us know anything about that?

We aren't personal friends with Chico. We don't know him. We only know the very little he allows us to see.

What I do know is that his evaluation and development of QBs put this team in a huge hole the last 2 years. Not one FBS QB on the roster after the man responsible has been here for 6 years.

Yet some would still give him the head coaching job today...

    Well, we are UNT fans.

During Mac's first year, I was helping out the offense during spring practice.  I was working with Chico quite a bit.  So, yes, I do know him.  I know/friends with about 75% of the players that played for Chico.

  6. I don't have any idea which players Wilson is personally responsible for recruiting, but recruiting takes on a completely different challenge when you are calling on a player wearing LSU colors, vs calling on a player wearing North Texas colors. I also perceive it as a situation where you are being "called" by coaches vs "calling on" coaches.

Wilson may have a lot of "national" contacts, but those contacts were established for the purpose of a High School coach getting his player(s) into a SEC school. How many of those same coaches are trying to get their players into North Texas? I guarantee that if Wilson were to make contact with all the same coaches that he's made contact with as a SEC recruiting coordinator, the conversation will go much differently when he's contacting them as the North Texas head coach.

Jinks is young, energetic, positive, a hard worker, and I don't think it would be much of an exaggeration to say that he's made a ton of contacts amongst Texas coaches.

With McCarney we've already seen how well a coach has done who's experience has mostly been out of Texas.....even with all his "skins". Obviously not enough coaches and players were impressed.

In fact North Texas got their first lesson about that when they hired Rod Rust back in 67. His only experience in Texas, both before and after, was his tenure as the North Texas coach. The knock on him was that he was a great X and O's coach, but he couldn't recruit. In fact his longest tenure ANYWHERE was here at North Texas. Another tribute to the competency of our administrators.

Anyway,  I don't see how we could go wrong with a highly motivated, hard working, Texas born coach who's gotten the same amount of college coaching experience in as Art Briles before his first gig as a head coach.

And if Jinks is not available, then what ever happened to Coach Thompsen as a possibility?

In 2011, after his first full year at LSU, he recruited Odell Beckham, La'El Collins, Zach Mettenburg and Jarvis Landry in 2011 alone. I think that answers your question if the guy can bring in talent.  Completely agree comparing UNT to LSU.  I'm not saying that we're LSU, I'm just saying what has Tech done lately??  Be an average Big 12 team while LSU is a top 20 program and top recruiting class every year.

Wilson mainly recruits LA, not nationally. I'm actually a big fan of us going back to recruiting guys from MS, AL, LA, KS.  I'm friends with most of the Dodge players, so I'm slightly bias.

I just think that its funny that a guy who's much more qualified, not to mention when they have the same story.....

  7. dodge biggest down fall wasn't texas ties. It was not having college assistants. And he didn't have 3 years experience seeing how a big 12 program was ran

yes since lsu is lighting up score boards with all those 5 star recruits and nunber one running back in the nation. No thanks

I know.. Its not like the guy recruited Odell Beckham, La'El Collins, Zach Mettenburg and Jarvis Landry in 2011 alone....

  8. Still NFL scout aren't going to really dive into a tape of a player playing against the Naval Academy to evaluate their talent level.  Navy has no regional presence here. The only really positive out of conference scheduling contract we have is SMU.

Huh.. Naval Academy and UNT are interchangeable.

AAC is not P5. They are G5 just like us.

With the split of the old Big East, there are now five power conferences: the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten ConferenceBig 12 ConferencePacific-12 Conference (Pac-12), and Southeastern Conference (SEC).

yeah did you know Tennessee-Knoxville has an enrollment of 27K and ours* is 36K?

Facts don't always translate perfectly to perception*. Like when I moved down to SA and someone asked if SA had an airport. I calmly explained that SA is the 7th largest city in the nation and it does, in fact have an airport*. She was surprised. Knoxville folks had a similar* reaction when I told them the enrollment numbers for UNT.

My point is that while Navy is a quality get for some folks, for the average level knowledge of CFB, we maybe could stand to get someone that gets the blood pumping a bit.

*various edits necessary due to Autocorrect.

All very true points but what other G5 school would be better?

  9. MGB: Follow-up thoughts on why winning won't fix everything at UNT, mostly because it never has before

    http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2015/11/follow-up-thoughts-on-a-salesman-as-a-coach-why-winning-wont-fix-everything-at-unt.html/

Understood, but what did UNT's HC have to do to bring 40k fans to the Cottonbowl on Jan. 1? Win.  They didn't have to come up with some strategic marketing strategy to get fans.  I dont know of a coach that will sell to the community more than Mac.  Mac just oversold and under delivered.

The HC did his job by getting to the bowl game.  The Athletic Dept. did not do their job by getting those people to buy season tickets the next year.  That's on the Athletic Dept, not the HC.

  10. Southern Miss is definitely the blueprint here to follow. Give the new guy time. He took over a team that went 0-12 and followed it up with a 1-11 season, winning their last game. But they got better last year, improving to 3 wins, and now sitting at 7-3, with two games left, at home against Old Dominion and at La Tech. Very possible that they are 8-4 and going into a bowl game in his third year.

Its my belief that we will have a season next year very much like this year's, as the new coach gets used to the roster he has and tries to bring in recruits that fit his system, probably winning a game or two. If we can get to 3-4 wins in Year 2 of the next coach, it would be possible to see us getting to 6+ wins in Year 3. That would mimic USM and would signal major improvement.

    Lets reword this:

UNT is definitely the blueprint here to follow. Give the new guy time. He took over a team that went 6-37 and followed it up with a 5-7 season, winning their last game. But they got better last year, but only won 4 games.  Now sitting at 7-3, with two games left, at home against USTA, Conference championship game on the line and at Tulsa. Very possible that they go 9-4 and going into a bowl game in his third year with a championship appearance and their first winning season in 10 years and first bowl game since 2001.

  11. Vito isn't going to get fired from the DRC if he asks those questions. He will get frozen out by the UNT athletic department, which will hurt his access to the programs. Belo won't fire Vito for that, they'll just ask him to cover more Denton County high school stuff and cover UNT almost like a correspondent.

And then we would have nobody to give us any decent coverage of this place.

Then will RV finally get fired?

  12. He absolutely did his research. Scott gave tidbits of the interview on his Twitter account. Sidway specifically called RV out on a statement regarding how basketball attendance as a whole had decreased in the NCAA and that the attendance drop under Benford was on par when the exact opposite was true regarding NCAA BBall attendance. RV was busted.

Yeah, I know.  I follow him and we tweet back and forth.  I say hope; undersell/ over-deliver.  Something UNT should start doing

  13. we are better because we have guards that can actually break down people one on one and get into the lane. Doing that gets open shots for other guys. We also have guys that can knock down open shots this year. That makes us better.

Reese & Brown are the biggest reasons we are better.

Ball movement is much better. Movement without the ball is better.

    What do those guys know?

    check them out. http://meangreennation.com/
