Explain, then, why all these other games are being televised?  According to you, there is no value to it.  The networks/cable….would not show them if there was not a value to it.  I would venture that in any week during the season, here in the DFW area, I could watch 20-30 games on TV.  Please explain how/why that is possible if there is no value to the networks??

It's filler content. Networks need content to fill out their schedules, especially ESPN+ which can show many games at once. I never once said there in no value, tonnage is a thing in media. What I am saying is we are low value, and would be even lower if we make another drop in perception.

So now I ask you what is the value of your games when you get paid 10x less than other conferences? And that's us who have the best media deal out of the G5s, the MAC, CUSA, and SBC could be looking at something like 60x lower.

What is your guess on how many games are actually shown on TV from Weds - Sat during the season?  I watch games from the Ivy League, MWC, Sunbelt, AAC, C-USA, as well as from the big boys. There is a reason that these games are shown.  People watch them.  Initially, maybe there is a pause…but I will get tired of watching the same 30 teams…I want to see games across all spectrum.

I don't have to guess. Here are the games and here are the ratings: https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/college-football-tv-ratings/

Week 7. UNT vs Temple, 37k viewers. The big names are getting 3/4/7 Million viewers. Our 37k viewers are are a drop in the ocean. Week 12 we did 618k vs SMU on ESPN2. We'd have to triple those numbers to make people notice us.

You may get tired of them, but the general public does not. There's a reason the same few teams are featured on national TV every week, and if people were tired of them they wouldn't be.

There's no way we would have any kind of network interest with decent money if we broke away from the power schools.

If the G5 left, it might take time to get the TV revenue.  I do think people will get tired of watching the same 30 teams on TV like it was in the 70’s and 80’s with only 2-3 channels showing games.

the G5 would get a lot of demand quickly and people are used to being able to watch whatever game they want.  Which may actually give the G5 leverage on a TV contract.

Do you guys listen to yourselves at all? If we had so much TV value why aren't we getting it now? But somehow if we left the system with the most valuable teams we would get more money?  It doesn't have any kind of sense.

The way for this to work is for the super league to get to 20 teams. Then a follow up division with the other 110 programs or possibly there is 3 tiers.

Super league 20 teams they all play each other. Yes a 19 game longer season.

    50 teams league 2

    60 teams league 3

You play with in your league but at the end of season 5 teams switch up down.

Bowls trophies and rivalries somewhat preserved. Yes 4 super league teams drop down each time with risers taking their schedule.

    GMG

    Never going to happen.

Just watched it, and I have to say it was a very good interview.  I may not have liked everything he had to say, but he was frank and insightful.  It's just the current reality.

I too like his frankness and would rather have that then generic coach speak. However the kind of coach I think we need is one the acknowledges those realities, but his goal and messaging is, "We want to win championships, we want to get into the CFP, and we need to build the team to do it." If that's not who you are, move aside and let someone else takeover who is.

So, if we are looked at that way by those guys, which is weird since the AAC doesn't look at us that way, but if they do and can create a level of play that is above G5, but not included in the Power Structure of these 40 behemoth programs, how many teams do they let in? In your view, Boston College, Syracuse, Wake Forest, Northwestern, Purdue. SMU, UCF, Cincy, UH, Mississippi State, Vandy, TCU, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, and Cal are gonna just play in their own setup? They have to have more teams. Even if you added 10 more demoted power schools, you'd find that they would need more programs. Well, that would mean teams from the top two G5 leagues, the MWC and the AAC, as well as anyone else that could compete.

If you are right and we would be relegated to a Sam Houston, SFA, and ULM level, then football at UNT needs to be discontinued. The drain is too much at that point. You wouldn't have bodybag games to pay for the rest of the athletic department anymore. But I just don't see us falling that low. UTEP or La Tech? Yeah, maybe so. But not us or UTSA.

The AAC took us on as a building project. We aren't there, but over the years they were hoping to turn us into a successful program with more media money and exposure. That's the plan for all of the CUSA schools they added.

Let's take a look at your scenario of 40 teams in the top. The Big10 is already at 18 and the SEC is at 16. Let's say The SEC takes UNC, FSU, Clemson, and Virginia. The Big10 takes Notre Dame and Stanford. that still leaves:

NCSU, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Miami, Va Tech, Boston College, Pitt,Syracuse, Louisville, Cal, SMU

Baylor, BYU, UCF, Cincy, Houston, Iowa St., Kansas, Kansas St., Oklahoma St., TCU, Texas Tech, WVU, Arizona, Arizona St. Colorado, Utah.

Why would these conferences not just join together and form a super conference? They could also pluck the desirable teams left in G5, and the schools always talked about are SDSU, Tulane, Memphis, USF. Sometimes you hear about UNLV, or UTSA/Rice, but not UNT. So how would we fit into that structure?

Ok, that's ridiculous. We aren't keeping a football program if we are going down to a level that is playing SFA and ACU as conference mates. But playing in a setup where the current lower tier Power teams get relegated would actually benefit us greatly.

What he's saying is why would those teams want to be associated with us? The hypothetical TCUs, Houstons, Cincys, Syracuses, etc would band together and form their own division, one that wouldn't include UNT. Why would those schools suddenly want to be associated with us? Would you want to be in a league with Angelo State and Tarleton? That's the same drop Baylor and Tech would view us as.

I agree with what he says, they would grab whatever the best of what's left over and we would be on the outside looking in.

It is truly sad to see many of our best posters come on here and try to pretend that we should be ok with our best players leaving to go to other schools.   This system sucks and will ultimately kill college sports and I refuse to adjust my views on it,

You've got two SMU guy's, working their asses off in this thread, trying to encourage us to quit mopping and get busy. Things must be really bad over here, but, I for one, appreciate your effort.

    No doubt that’s true.

I can’t begrudge someone like Rubin who has been here 4 years, given a lot to the program, and gotten a degree.  Good for him for all of those things.  Plus, I believe he only has this year due to COVID, so there’s that in his favor as well.  My issue is nothing personal, and is admittedly shallow, but going to another school taints his legacy here to some degree.  Kind of like Emmitt Smith playing for the Cardinals or Michael Jordan for the Wizards.  Plus, he’s leaving MY university, so I’m obviously not happy about that.

I don’t wish most of our portal guys well, nor do I wish them ill will, but I do hope things work out for Rubin the way he expects.

Agree on all accounts, sucks for us, but he gave us everything he had. His family were great supporters. I can't blame the young man for going out and trying to elevate himself and get national exposure if he can have a great season.

I don’t completely disagree, but at least they used to have sit out a year if they transferred.  If I’m going to lose a year of eligibility, I’m going to think long and hard before I leave for another school.  Now?  No reason whatsoever to stay.

I can't blame them, the system in place allows them to profit and to move freely. We may not like it, but it's the system.

I'm hoping schools taking over the collectives, it's already happening for reasons I stated above, will usher in contracts and buy outs for players. We've opened Pandora's box so we aren't going back to amateur sports, the best we can get out of it is payment on our investments.

Sure. But not at these monetary levels. It used to be bags of cash as a sign on bonus, if you will. And that was for the elite of the elite players. Then $100 handshakes by boosters for all, but also geared toward the elite players. Now we will legitimately be having bench players at p5 stay bench players at p5 because the money is better. And g5 head coaches are already resiging their posts and taking p5 coordinator jobs. They see the writing on the wall. They see it up close on a daily basis.

Agree, there was some semblance of programs doing the right thing and following the rules even though they were always getting busted for violations, and everyone knew cheating was going on. It's why I was saying the veil is off now, and making everyone play by those rules has supercharged the whole thing.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the schools aren't supposed to work with NIL collectives to get players right? But everyone including UNT is 100% working with these collectives to send out deals to players. Same kind of fake rule following like we used to have, just more of it now.

  13. To add to that Virginia passes law to allow schools to pay players directly.

    https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/39967961/virginia-law-allows-schools-pay-athletes-nil

    Quote

The new law, which is scheduled to take effect July 1, is the first in any state to make it illegal for the NCAA to punish a school for compensating athletes for their NIL rights. Current NCAA rules prohibit schools from signing NIL deals with their own players. The law could either give Virginia schools a significant recruiting advantage or provide a catalyst for similar changes elsewhere.

"If this law gets us closer to a federal or a national solution for college athletics then it will be more than worthwhile," University of Virginia athletic director Carla Williams said. "Until then, we have an obligation to ensure we maintain an elite athletics program at UVA."

What's the rationale behind waiting until after spring to get defensive linemen in the portal vs. going after more in the previous portal window?

Isn't that what Littrell did? We see that worked out well...
