  1. Here's a bit of trivia I'd forgotten: the first game played in Maverick Stadium was UTA vs NTin 1980. It was also the first college football game broadcast by ESPN.

    More information here

Calling Shenanigans on this.....check out the wikipedia article not the Mavericks unofficial website

TBS became the first cable station to nationally broadcast college football live when it began airing games during the 1982 season. The games were aired under a special "supplemental" television contract with the NCAA.[3] ESPN followed later the same year, starting with a simulcast of the Independence Bowl match-up between Kansas State and the University of Wisconsin on December 11, 1982, which was the first college football game shown live on ESPN.

  2. They already have a much nicer football stadium than Fouts. As for a football team ...

If they have an actual basketball court, we should schedule them every couple of years. I still say "no" to games in a place where players can literally fall off of the court!

I am gonna have to disagree with the statement on Maverick Stadium being nicer than Fouts...lets take a look

Yeah...I will take Fouts over that

  3. I think its our duty to spam the hell out of that column.

What I wrote to the Sports Editor of the DMN Garry Leavell @ gleavell@dallasnews.com

    Garry,

I find the lack of coverage of the UNT participation in the SBC Championship Game Tonight very very discomforting to say the least. To add insult to injury your staff has decided that heavily promoting an article about TCU and SMU's lack of a basketball program that performs was more valuable to your readers than reading about UNT's season long accomplishments and potential tournament appearance decided tonight. With over 100,000 Alumni in the DFW area, the 4th largest school in Texas is just up the street and many consider Denton to be as part of DFW as is Rowlett or Grapevine. How could you justify burying the story of UNT over this coulda, woulda, shoulda story of two schools that combined do not have the active enrollment of UNT? I find it very uncouth to have made this decision which has obviously (see the comments on the story) disturbed many of your readers. JJT is already considered by many to be a controversial figure but his article has placed the nail in the coffin for my opinion of him as a true local news writer. Some facts about UNT's season that should be brought to reader attention are as follows:

1.) Second Tourney visit (potentially) in 4 yrs.

2.) Johnny Jones is in his 7th year as a coach and we have now had over 4 yrs in a row of 20+ win seasons

3.) We beat OSU on our turf last year and had a very formidable game against top 25 ranked TAMU this year (outscoring them second half)

4.) We set a school record in most games won in a season

5.) Most of our talent returns next year for another round of a great season

Please ensure that tomorrow's headlines incorporate a least a little bit of enthusiasm for DFW's largest school and their hard-earned and triumphant season of basketball.

    Thanks so much,

    Jozef Foerch

  4. Unfortunately, Lucky's tossed us out on our ear to celebrate our win on the empty Sunday night streets of Hot Springs. But I heard the Irish pub is an experience. I can picture some bikers walking in there and some fat Irishman locking the door and saying "Now yous can't leave."

But here is an interesting picture that reflects the quality of the motels up the road where I am staying:

Damn....rent is expensive up there! I wonder if that includes all the movie channels?

  5. ESPN 360 shows that tonight will have WKU and our game against Denver on. It does state subject to blackout next to the game details but I looked it up and I don't think that will affect the DFW area. Guess the laptop is getting plugged into the bigscreen tonight!

  6. I think we have a good shot at this tourney, but for some reason or another, I think MTSU has the best shot to knock us out, we might be poised to play them in the semi's

    What are yall thoughts

I picked NT to win the entire tourney and they really do have the makings for an upset if we reach the big dance.

Devry.....cause they are serious about success! Kidding...hopefully we don't see FIU or ASU...otherwise I say bring it!

  7. I should have known as soon as it was obvious that we could end up tied with Troy and MTSU (the kings of the Sun Belt Co-Championship) that this wasn't going to end well for us.

    So angry. So, so angry...

Please explain to me how we are in a bad spot? We are up against the winner of ULL or ULM (both we have just beat) and MTU is against FIU or Denver (beaten by FIU).

With Troy they play FAU (Who kicked the crap outta them) or USA (which also beat them). If anyone should be nervous it shouldn't be us. If Troy wins that game...WKU will likely play Troy and they last time they met if didn't work out for them (Troy).

So.....the way I see it....we still have a strong chance of winning the East and WKU winning the West (as the pre-season predicted) Only Time and Faith will tell.

Lets Go Mean Green...Bring it Home!

  8. Attendance - Another reason the Belt and MAC are viewed as "tail draggers". <_<

    FBS Teams Games Attendance Average

    Southeastern 76,288

    Big Ten 71,769

    Big 12 62,875

    Pacific-10 54,186

    Atlantic Coast 51,249

    Big East 44,804

    Mountain West 33,202

    Conference USA 26,600

    Western Athletic 22,749

    Sun Belt 16,463

    Mid-American 15,317

    Independents 48,627

Very true...but imagine the possibilities of a winning season and a new stadium on our side. The only thing that stinks is that we don't have too many big name teams coming to us yet for the next 4 yrs (after this one of course). I see no reason why we can't match C-USA averages with these variables in our pocket.

  9. http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/football_records/Attendance/2009.pdf

In Summary....Not bad numbers at all for our win-loss record! Some interesting comparisons.

    SUNBELT-

    We Beat out:

    Ark St- 17.5k a game

    FIU- 10.2k a game

    FL Atl- 15.3 a game

    LA Monroe- 13.8 a game

West Ky- 14.1 a game (with their record??? Kinda impressive)

    We Had Less Numbers Than:

LA Laf- 18.6k a game (just barely)

Troy- 18.4k a game (we will beat them next year!)

    Middle Tenn- 20.5k a game

Outside of Our Conference Teams that we Beat Out:

    Akron- 17.3k a game

    Ball St.- 10.8k a game

    UAB- 17.9k a game

Ohio- 17.9k a game (they went to a bowl!)

Northern ILL.- 14.8k a game (Romo would be disappointed)

    Nevada- 17.5k a game

New Mexico State- 16.5k a game

    *Rice- a Dismal 13.5k a game

    Other Interesting Comparisons

SMU- 21.3k a game (after the year they had?)

Central Mich- 19.7k a game (same as above?)

I would project that next year's numbers average out at 22k a game...reasoning is:

The Excitement about Canales and his potential

The Return of so many talented players....hopefully sharpened and elite by now

The Last Year of Fouts Field

and Foremost because we came so close to winning 5 extra games last year but couldn't seal the deal. The problems associated with this will hopefully be gone!

  10. Just kidding....just poking at the amount of vs./comparison posts being put up right now. Great to hear from Canales on chat this morning....we are...without a doubt going places this year. Not just because we want to believe it...but because it is in the cards. Way too much talent and now coaching staff for us to have to battle it out with the like of WKU again. Anyone else notice that our best games might have been against teams with big hypes this last year?? Ball State...Army (up for debate...but we almost had them, Ohio)....

  11. Where did I say anything about 303? Do you see me making a statistical argument? What I'm saying is clamoring for a senior with limited experience to start based on a statistical argument is silly to me. He doesn't have stats on which to base an argument. We had to pass the ball more when Tune was in because:

    a) if he had come into a game, we were usually already behind.

b ) he doesn't have the legs to run the ball himself, which cuts down on the rushing attempts (and limits the offense)

    c) two of his starts did rightly come against our toughest competition, and there was little choice.

My point has always been that I don't know who the best QB on our roster is, but that it's honestly not my biggest concern after seeing the offense we run. And I'm personally of the opinion that we likely don't have "that guy" on the roster anyway. That, and everyone always loves the backup. Both Tune and Riley's QB ratings are pretty weak, TBH. Sadly, still better than Vizza/Meager ever did.

If you're changing QBs at this point, he HAS to be the difference between 2 or 3 wins and going to a bowl game, because you're putting in a guy with no eligibility left, so you get to do it all over again next year. It better be worth it.

The only teams that get by without having long-term consistent starters are the occasional BCS teams that have 3 and 4-star backups. They groom them, get them a couple of years to start, move on. We don't have that luxury.

I mean, if we don't care about sample size, then Derek Thompson!!!! He's 100% completion rate, 20 yards/attempt. 378 QB Rating. He's perfect. Okay, I probably shouldn't stir the pot, since people will come in here riding those numbers.

I for one am more than anxious to see how Derek Thompson (a dual threat QB) will rank against Riley in practice this spring. May have to show up for some of the sessions!

  12. tune is a fine qb but riley is what canales is used to having as a qb and has 3 years left vs. one.

I hope you are right....beefing up Riley in combination with electroshock treatment for every time he throws an interception during Spring Practice would be great. Riley truly does have talent...without a doubt. I just hope that Canales (and I think he can) can sharpen the guy's skills.

  13. We picked up a kicker in Olen, and I thought Atteberry was pretty good last year as a true freshman.

Let's hope that Olen is better than Knott...

True True....but look at Olen's capabilities...he is both a punter and a kicker. Double score!

Check out his long of 47 ft. for a FG at his 2008 training camp...he also nailed 34 of 35 PATs (though not under pressure) and his average punt is 38 yds. This was two years ago..

    Zachary Olen's Stats

  14. Artie Spanier just dissed us pretty bad on Sports Radio by basically saying that we would be a last resort for a high school kid with a concussion. We ought to use our numbers to get that guy back. Never liked him or his opinions much anyway.

Texting that guy right now...used to be a fan of him till hearing about this.
