  1. Just because a building is old, doesn't mean it has historic value and shouldn't be torn down.  I'm for making things better.  If Fry street needs to be changed, so be it.  The people will still visit.

You may me surprised at some of the things that happened....

    - Norah Jones used to play shows back when Baghari's was Jims Diner

    - Charles "Tex" Watson of the Manson family used to live in the Fry. St. Apartments

    - Fry. St was actually named after a Sheriff William S. Fry who was respected for cleaning up crime in Denton.

    - The Argo is the main reason places like Hailey's and Rubber Gloves exist, they where one of the first places to bring in national acts, I'm not sure but Rick's may have been a first.

    - In that parking lot behind all the buildings there used to be bungalow style housing that students would hide out in to avoid the draft.

We are finding out more and more about this area the more research we are doing.

You do have a point about the way the buildings look. Many of the tenants have not kept the buildings up as they should have. Notice the side of the tomato graphite is covered up with white paint rather than the same color used on the wall. We are trying to change things like this as well.

Our goal is to at least save that "L" of buildings along Hickory and Fry. The insides may end up being gutted, but the outer structure would still stand. Granted we lose local businesses but we feel national chains won't survive there and local flavor will eventually return.

Look at the Gap in Austin on Guadalupe (spelling?) that store did not survive. If we are able to save the existing structure you will at least have a cultural and historic icon still remaining. Face it Fry St. makes Denton what it is, or at least part of it and I feel that is a fairly large part of it. Let all these developers put up their stores on the Loop and I-35, take down that damn Desert Sands motel and build something there, but keep out of historic districts. If this keeps going on there will be no flavor left in Denton and we will be another cookie cutter town like Frisco or Flower Mound.

  2. I posted this in the other Fry St. thread, but just in case people have started to ignore it.

There will be a public meeting at Dan's Silver Leaf on Industrial St. tonight to update the public of what is going on and how they can help. It will be an open forum as well so you can speak your mind for it or even against it. But if you do be civil about it. More information can be found at http://www.savefrystreet.com

  3. The buildings on Fry/Oak Street are indeed old, but I'd say they are far from historic.

Far from historic eh? I guess 1920 isn't historic enough for you then. You really should check out the sites "notahippie" posted

    http://www.savefrystreet.com and http://www.centraldentonpreservation.org

The Central Denton Preservation site has a bunch of old photos of the Fry St. area and the collection is growing rapidly. We even found one with troops out in front of the buildings celebrating "getting back from the trenches."

Also check out the public meeting tonight at Dans Silver Leaf, it will be from 7-9 p.m.

It will be very informative; the group has made civic contact with the developer so we now have an open dialogue with him. Come tonight for more information.

  4. The DRC has an article up on this

    http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/...a.2e937a0f.html

so does the NT Daily http://media.www.ntdaily.com/media/storage...gepublisher.com

Accordingto the NT Daily article the current Mayor does not support the razing of Fry St. As for the new candidates I am not sure other than Justin Bell. McNeil will likely be more for it even though he is endocrced by Mayor Brock.

This part of town is part of the heart of Denton. To see it go would truly be sad. Please start getting involved and attending the City Council and Planning and Zonning meetings.

  5. One more thing! For those that care about this go vote this Saturday!

The following candidates are likely to be more sensative to the issue of destroying Fry and at the same time support growth, especially John Paul Eddy

Justin Bell for mayor (a small business owner himself)

Shelley Shay - Pace 6 (former city employee, who was laid off a few months ago)

John Paul Eddy - Place 5

All three of these individuals are also endorsed by the Police department for their support of an increased police presence and a raise in their salary as well. Of course they are going to support them, but ultimately they are for a safer and cleaner Denton.

For more info visit http://www.myspace.com/preservedenton another web site may be in the works as well the will constantly be updated with the happenings in Denton that deal with similar issues.

  6. sorry but this can only be good for UNT and City of Denton, except for all the status quo non-growth Dentonites

Non-growth?? I am all for Denton growing but not through the establishment of national retialer after national retailer. I want small business' to thrive in Denton. If you have ever tried to star a business you will know how hard it is and how much cost is involved. It aint easy and bringing in the corporate monsters is only going to make it tougher. The local sporting goods store that was there for over 50 years recently went under due to corporate whores. Denton is (or rather was) a unique town. Developments only destroys what the City claims it has pride in). These busines owners are going to be run out and will likely end up on unemployment. They won't be able to wait it out untill the developer finishes the job to move into a new shop. This must be stoped.

  7. MGN has started these rumors before. Baseless ...

I don't recall ever starting any rumors before!?!?!

BUT I did some asking around and found out more information

    Here https://egov.cityofdenton.com/crw/Project_S...t_no=PAC06-0014

Is the information about the project, just click on the comments link.

I also found out that it is NOT definite yet.

My sweet ph34r.gif skills received this message:

"It is called University Town Center. At this point they have only filed for a Preliminary Application Conference, project number PAC06-0014. This is done to get input for what will be required for development of a project. Often times it may be months before any plans are actually submitted or many projects never continue if there are too many issues. You can go to the City Website, Online services, Trakit and search for project #PAC06-0014. "

So since nothing is actually finalized there may be things we can do to prevent it from happening. I am going to try to find out what steps there are to take to start petetions or what not. I will post more as I find out.

  8. I’m sure some of you have heard this, but I don’t feel there is enough buzz about this so I Thought I would post it her. Sorry it is posted in football, but more people will see it this way.

From what I am hearing ALL the properties between Fry St. and Welch between Hickory and Oak have been bought up (except for the barber shop who has not caved yet). A development firm out of California is coming in to build another Yuppie type strip center with apartments on the top (8 stories tall).

As you may know our local elections are upon us, so I urge you guys to do research as I will be doing and vote for council members and a new mayor that will not support bringing in giant corporate monsters to Denton anymore.

One of the only reasons I still like this town is because of the Fry St. area and I am not one of the “belligerent drunks” as Mayor Brock would say. This part of town has been a part of my life since high school and now some chummy developer is going to build yuppie land and send Denton well on it’s way to becoming another Frisco or Flower Mound.

This whole thing has really got me going and made me want to be active in local politics. So what are you guys’ thoughts on this? I’m not sure much can be done now since property owners have already agreed to sell to the developer. I think I am most irritated that this was never made known to the public so they never had a say in it.

  9. I'm bummed I missed the ending. I had to go transmit photos. I honestly did not expect I win, but thrilled they pulled it off.

Who is this guy in the NT section yelling "brick" at the NT players? Does he have big bushy hair? A friend of mine knows this guy, he keeps telling me he goes to the games to heckle the NT players, and yes he is a student. Somebody should take him out next time he does it smile.gif

  10. The Office of Communications and Marketing did the re-design. The design has actually been finished for a few months, but has just now launched. I guess it took them some time to impliment it across the entire site.

  11. Guys, people make mistakes! That's life! Let's accept the guy’s apology and move on. We are human we err. I don't see why it is so difficult to see this. Yes he was wrong; yes he was a total jerk, but a lot of as are at times. Why is it any different with RF? Just because he is somewhat of a public figure to the Mean Green Nation does not make him any less human.

  12. I always thought the team came and faced the crowd after a VICTORY. We are so used to seeing this now we think it is routine. I may be wrong, but I thougt that is how it was. Did the face the crowd a few years ago after the South Florida loss? I can't remember, does anybody know?

Either way it is no reason to stop showing our support. Anybody who does not is a fair weather fan. The oceans are rough right now folks, so either bail out in a life boat or stick it out and be amazed after the oceans have become calm. It may be another year or two, but I think it will happen.
