  1. Bynes did nothing other than block but I have never been terribly impressed with him. Delgado was pretty good until the Chancellor injury which isn't terribly surprising because he is not a number one wr. I really don't think they regressed as much as they were exposed without Chancellor in there to draw attention away from them.

Agreed on this point. When you are minus your top receiver and your top rb...well, you need the understudies to step up. It exposed our lack of depth that we have heard so much about from Mac. If you listen to what the man says, he tells the truth. We were small, slow, and had no depth. I think he is getting more out of our young men than the previous staff. But, until we are bigger, faster, and we have more contributing members in the program, we will always be 2 or 3 injuries away from being a meh football team. I THINK we are getting bigger and faster through the strength and conditioning program... I think the size and speed of our recruits is being improved too...not to the level we all want, but I THINK there is improvement there.

85 contributors is not just a wish...it is a necessary element to a successful football program. Injuries happen. Fact of the football life. More qualities players breeds competition, which improves players...but more competition means more good options when the number one option goes down.

With Mac's plan, I THINK we will steadily improve to the point where we will see it show up in the W column. I HOPE/THINK that it will start to show the next step next year...but then again, I thought we'd be bowling this year after what we all saw last season... So..... gmg?

I can't wait until signing day. Recruiting season has been more fun for me than the actual seasons...except the u la la game and the kansas state games this year and mtsu last year.

  2. The real question is do you trust Mac and staff's ability to evaluate, and more importantly, their ability to develop talent into a good fbs team. Despite the bad record in his first 2 years, it was still improvement over the previous regime, not that it is much to improve on.

We are all still mad about the last 8 years. No matter what this recruiting class looks like, I bet nobody will be happy with it, just like last year. Shame.

Wins will cure all, and I hope this coming season brings .500 or better. For everyone's sanity.

  3. I didn't catch all of it as I was doing other things but this is what I remember last night when mac went through the breakdown of what he planned to sign this year:

2 Athletes - like his explanation...db's, kick returners, slot receiver type of athletes. Guys that can make plays in space. Think this jermaine Antoine fits this description perfectly... plus one more if we should get this kid?

4 - 5 OLine - seems like this is what he wants to stock pile, 3 so far. Cody Nelson, Harrison Sorge, Dominic Walker, plus 2 more?

3 DLine - wish he could stock pile this position. Could this also fit the 3 to 4 juco kids that he also mentioned would be a part of this class? Can you imagine how happy this board would be if this were the case? No commits ID'ed by Mr. Vito as of yet... of course...

3 linebackers - Don't remember his number here, but Fred Scott(also listed as FB), Calvin Minor, and Sed Ellis thus far

    3 - 4 WR's - playmakers are a must here. Darvin Kidsey, plus 3 more?

1 QB - dajon williams, brock berglund(don't think he counts) DONE?

0 RB - only position that he would not sign anybody this year cause he feels set. noticed that he only mentioned byrd, jim jim, pegram, and sashington...no mention of jamarcus jarvis and mark lewis. for some reason I had high hopes for these 2 in addition...falling in love with names I guess. DONE

This is all I can remember which only totals out to 18 or so(think he said he would sign 20 this year, which does NOT include the xfers and gray shirts?). Anyways, can anybody confirm or remember more confidently than I tried this morning?

    Thanks

Recruiting season has officially begun. I still have the signing day booklet hanging in my cubicle from the signing day "thing" at Apogee. Can't wait until 2013's version. GMG.

  4. If Mac stays consistant, no. He said he is building this program on Texas high school kids.

I would anticipate sprinkling 2 or 3 in per year. That includes xfers. I think he is willing to take his lumps now in favor if red shirting and allowing kids to develop. The kids we have to recruit NEED that year of physical development in addition to learning the system in place. This is his vision, and just because we are ALL disappointed in the record this year, he isn't going to scrap his plan. He wants to get us back to 85 schollies for contributors. Without quality depth, there won't be wins late in the year.

  5. I THINK we have the qb. Maybe HOPE is the right word. Weapons should be good as long as oline doesn't take a step backwards(dangerous assumption).

I just want a front 7 that can beat the piss out of anybody. So, give me 2 boogers and 2 Demarcus wares to go with the current crop(I know, not a small wish list).

Amazing how good a secondary can be with the qb on his back if he attempts more than a 3 step drop.

  6. We had 9 commits this time last year. With the Hunter Siddons offer pull(don't really like this, but maybe this is done more than we think), we are at 9 commits now. Obviously, we are exactly the same as we were last year.

I think last year's recruiting class is the only one comparable since it was this coaching staff's full year to recruit.

I think things will end up alright, but then again, I thought we'd be fine every year for the last 5 years....

It is definitely time to start watching the recruiting game now that the quest for a bowl is done. And of course there is basketball..

As always, we need DT's and DE's and maybe a WR that can run a 4.1 and catch the ball. just like every other year.

Sorry, looking it up, it appears we have 10 commits...

  7. Would be nice to see, but I would assume these will be Chico's last two games with the Mean Green. His offensive style does not meld with DD, I mean DMacs style of bruising run and short dump screens

I'm not so sure about this. I think they are calling plays to the strength of the offensive unit.

I bet Chico is salivating at the prospect of having Berglund at the helm. This is complete and total speculation on my part... I have no information other than what I've seen and heard(george and hank) this season...

There really is no harm in trying some things.... Carlos harris can be a solid playmaker... but the problem is, who else do you fear? Jeremy Brown? The Juco receiver whose name escapes me right now?

Chancellor and the Jimmy show are out. Thompson doesn't deliver the ball on time or on target consistently... Strength of the team is the oline and pounding the rock.

What we need is to take some chances on D to put some pressure to force bad decisions. But, with 2 good/poised qb's for Monroe, I'm not holding my breathe that this will happen tomorrow. I'll be hoping, but I'm not gonna be putting the mortgage money on the line for U of NT to cover or win. There's always next year... I suppose.

  8. “You have to show that you can help us win games,” McCarney said. “Does that mean you have to be an NFL draft pick? No. Does that mean you can continue to sit in the program and never help us? No. That means I made a mistake in bringing you here and you made a mistake in coming here.” Look...didn't most of us expect us to finish with a 4-8 or 5-7 record? My prediction was 5-7, but that 4-8 wouldn't shock me as much as 6-6. The truth is, when you looked up and down this roster, the depth wasn't there in key places: (1) The defensive line depth was glaring. It doesn't matter that you have a guy or two that is "good." You have to have bodies to rotate in there because this is perhaps the toughest position, physically, to play - day in and day out, week in and week out, year in and year out. (2) The entire starting secondary and many its backups had graduated/used up their eligibility. Are there some good, young athletes there? Yes. But, replacing all four starters in the secondary was going to spell trouble along the way. (3) The talent at wide receiver was not especially good, and needed two to three people to really step it up. I think we've all been pleasantly surprised that the run game didn't suffer a drop off with the losses of Lance Dunbar and James Hamilton. We have a bright future there. I think the surprise disappointments were the early season special teams struggles and the lack of development in the wide receiver corp. QB has been debated ad infinitum, as the QB position always is at any level on any team during any season. There was a time in Football History when people wondered whether Steve Walsh or Troy Aikman was the future of the Dallas Cowboys. (You forgot already that in 1989 Walsh was 1-4 as a starter for Dallas, and Troy was 0-11?...Walsh's QB rating 60.5 for the season, Aikman's 55.7...really.) I think, as many do, the game is won and lost "in the trenches." Our offense trench seems to be set well for the next two to three seasons. We are deep at running back. We seem to be deep at...tight end! I'll argue that with Thompson you have an experienced leader; and, in Berglund, you have a guy whose talent was recognized at one point in his life with scholarship offers from Kansas State, Boise State, Tulsa, UCLA, and Utah...schools that have a pretty decent bowl appearance record over the past decade or so. I think we're set there no matter who wins the position next spring and fall - and, there will be a quality backup. That leaves me with this, as I've said before: (1) We need depth on the defensive line. (2) We need more true playmakers at receiver. I don't think Dan is that far off. I know it stings him and us to be losing. But, let's face it...we're right where many of us thought we would be anyway. Here's to hoping the 2013 signing day delivers three or four DTs and two to three WRs who can step in a contribute immediately. I know Dan is healthy, even given his slight setback last year. So, at this juncture in his life and career - and in UNT's, given the step up to C-USA impending - I don't see the point in redshirting talent that can be on the field helping. Get guy who can help on the field from the get go.

    current classification: Player

    DT's

    Jr: Richard Abbe - contributor

So: Joe Astorga - haven't noticed him

    Jr: Ryan Boutwell - contributor

    Sr: Tevinn Cantly - gone

    Fr: Mustafa Haboul - redshirting

    Fr: Dylan McDorman - redshirting

Fr: Sir Calvin Wallace - redshirting

+1 new recruit than can step in immediately, and we are still short handed here... injuries would leave us very very shorthanded again, and they happen every year. I am intrigued by the 3 redshirts though...plus austin orr moving to DT, if he can stay healthy. maybe that's a reach.

    DE's

    Jr: Aaron Bellazin - contributor

    Fr: Malik Dilonga - redshirting

    Fr: Brad Horton - redshirting

    So: Alexander Lincoln - contributor

    So: Daryl Mason - contributor

    Jr: Brandon McCoy - contributor

    Sr: K.C. Obi - gone

RFr: Austin Orr - injured, might be moving to DT?

    Fr: Dutton Watson - redshirting

I feel good about DE(atleast better than DT). Just hope the redshirts can come in a make an impact. As with DT's, injuries can make this list look really thin very quickly, and these injuries happen every year.

    WR's

    RSr: Christopher Bynes - gone

    Jr: Carl Caldwell - ??

So: John Chelf - xfer, hearing good things?

    Sr: Ivan Delgado - gone

    Fr: Carlos Harris - contributor

    So: Willie Hubbard - ??

    Fr: Roderick Lancaster - redshirting

    Jr: Lynrick Pleasant - ??

    Fr: Steven Rivera - ??

RFr: Chaz Sampson - possibly leaving, noncontributor

    Fr: Nick Schrapps - redshirting

    Jr: Darnell Smith - contributor

    So: Derrick Teegarden - ??

Jr: Darius Terrell - xfer, hearing good things?

I think WR will be better next year, but we shall see. Having Chancellor and Harris...plus Terrell and Chelf? I think we should be good right there. Any contributions from the redshirts would be gravy, right? If we can just add a guy that can flat out fly and catch the ball...hmmmmm......

I have been sitting with a buddy of mine that played TE for UNT and he yells at thompson nearly every play. Says that thompson doesn't deliver the ball when the WR is open on nearly every play. I hadn't noticed it until I had him walk me through some plays. It seems fairly obvious to me now. Couple this with the misthrows, I am now convinced that we can upgrade. If Thompson did end up as our backup, I think our offense COULD end up being much better next year with that solid O-line and running game.

I'm already convincing myself that next year is when we will see REAL progress. When Mac's 1st and 2nd classes are able to come in and get a year or 2 under their belts in this system, I feel like this is where it SHOULD get a bunch better...

The only thing I know for sure is that I'll get to see 6 home games next year, and when we are in cusa, our games should be on TV more often. So, we should atleast get to see how wrong I am with my assessment. I predicted 7 and 6 this year, losing a bowl game... I suppose we could still get there if we won out, and won the bowl game, but I'm not holding my breath.

  9. So, if this has been brought up before, I apologize. BUT, if feel like this is important enough to restate anyways.

My wife was asking me to delete some of my dvr'ed stuff...that meant the pre-game UNT 21 show for the Cajun Football game. So, I sat and watched it before I was about to delete it and make the wife happy again...

Rick V and Tony B were interviewed, and the topic of scheduling for basketball came up. One or both of them said that it was "hard to get a game" with schools this year.

We all know that SMU has been ducking UNT for years cause they didn't want to get their heads kicked in on the court... So, its a given that they are just a big(wait handfull considering what moody's looks like) old bunch of pink polo wearing P's... But, nobody outside of UTA would play UNT this year in state? Nobody? No Texas Tech? No Texas? No Houston? TCU? even Oklahoma State? Really?

I heard a rumor that Texas last year made sure they moved the game with us forward in the season as to make double sure that Tony Mitchell wasn't eligible yet to play.

I'm sorry, but ALL YOU OTHER SCHOOLS ARE A BUNCH OF P'S....and of course p stands for pansies.

Carry on. Can't wait for Basketball Season! See you at the Super Pit!

  10. I'd also like to add that John Schilleci was a steal and if we can hang on to him he'll be a player here. Work ethic is second to none and he's about as physical as you could ask for in a DB.

I saw this young man at one of the games earlier in the season, and he was a bit bigger than I was expecting him to be. Good sign. Hope he can run. He should be able to handle himself as far as being a physical db. Hope he has the speed he needs to get it done.

  11. espn3 can f'ing suck it

I've seen that damn robert griffin 3rd commercial about 10 times....but about 5 plays...

then again, maybe its a good thing, cause it appears that the team didn't show up for the game.

This is f'ing bad all the way around.

george and hank is working.... that's about it.

  12. Since we only have 2 running backs, who is being slighted? Brown, Byrd, or Jim Jim? (mostly kidding here...mostly)

This game should be a very interesting contest. Does momentum matter?

How will Delgato's hammy feel this week?

Will our O-line continue its string of very solid showings? Sack numbers and run blocking?

How will our d hold up against the MTSU offense?

    Can't wait.

  13. Ladies and gentlemen,

Video game offenses are nice... The kids love them.

But being able to run the ball down your opponent's throat is a thing of beauty. Setting up play action pass and catching the safeties cheating into the box.... Also a classic thing of beauty.

The best sec teams can line up and pound it down anybody's throat. When the game is on the line in the 4th, I feel like the d that has had to defense the run for 3.5 quarters is going to wear out and be vulnerable to caving in. I think this is what happened against the Cajuns.

I think this formula works with our personel. I love the emphasis on oline. It really appears to be the stength of this team. We need a dline to match it. If that happens... Lookout.

  14. the only issue I have with "some" of them...NOT all of them.... is that I can see them hanging out on the hill during the game. Yes, I know they aren't the only ones... They are just easily identifiable cause they are drinking next to their letters...within sight outside the stadjum from my vantage point...

If the stadjum were full, then there would be no problem... We just all want the stadjum to be overflowing. Since that isn't happening, we are going to blame anybody and everybody that isn't filing into our palace. The greeks are just an easy target...

BTW, I was greek at U of NT. I went to most of the games at fouts waaaay back when... I never saw the appeal of going out to the game and hanging out in the parking lot. If you are going to the trouble to go out there, I always thought it was silly to hang out and drink outside of the actual event when it was free to get in there for us....flasks are a beautiful thing if you want to keep the party going...

    gmg...
