I don't think many people perceived the two programs to be at the same level.  Colorado State came out of a clearly superior conference, and had been one of its better teams in those years.  North Texas had been a perennial loser, and was continuing that trend the year they met CSU in the N.O. Bowl.  Most people though North Texas had no business being in a bowl game, having only won 5 games that year.  And North Texas laid one in that game that proved everyone's perceptions correct.

We had a pretty nice offense, and we were at least competitive against them, but they were clearly superior in the trenches. Same thing against Hattiesburg.

    EXACTLY THIS.

At some point you have to look in the mirror.  If we think that every conference that we're in stinks, we're VERY likely the reason that it does.  We are a HUGE university sitting smack dab in the middle of one of the best sports regions in the world.  It's time to take a bath, get good and sobered up, and stop blaming others for our own failings.  I think the fan base has already taken this to heart.  I have no idea if our administration has.

Some truth to that. Some of our better conference mates seem to leave when we're in the neighborhood, and there's really no logical reason for that. It's really all about winning for us, and I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tired of saying that.

It really is. If gaining no new members causes OU and KU to jump ship, UT can easily go independent, which they may do just to keep the LHN. If UT does go independent, Tech will be just as screwed as Baylor and TCU are. Those three schools will be future members of the MWC or AAC.

UT could easily join another conference and play its other sports there, such as the AAC. Its not scheduling would be hard for the to setup--they can easily set up annual games with OU in Dallas, Baylor, TCU, and Tech, then sprinkle in ongoing series with ND and BYU. Then play three bought G5/FCS games, as well as three other P5 games each year and you will see them having 7-8 home games every year.

Which is why we should beg and pray to get into the MWC. Of course all the praying in the world won't help unless we suddenly start winning.

  4. "The way Dan McCarney handled his abrupt firing was the classiest moment I’ve ever been a part of in my short sports career. How many people in this world would, after abruptly receiving the pink slip 10 minutes after your most humiliating moment on the job, willingly walk out to a pool of reporters and colleagues and talk about it in the heat of the moment?"

I'll gladly speak in front of a gang of pedophiles and cannibals for a couple of minutes if someone will drop a couple of million on me

The plural of anecdote isn't evidence.

For every Josh McCown (or any other exception you can think of) there are 100s who would never crack the practice team on any FBS team.  There are always examples of highly rated players busting, and lightly recruited players doing well.  They are the outliers.  Highly rated players do better than low rated players as an average.

It's no coincidence that NT was the most successful under Dickey, who was able to recruit double digit DaMN State Top 100s.  We have recruited a total of 2 the entire time since he has been gone.

Very true. DD had the luxury of competing in what was basically a 1AA conference, but he certainly made the best of it in the early 2000's. Our dropoff in local recruit star status is very sad, and what makes it even more sad is that kids are so much more informed these days before signing that LOI. We've clearly got a reputation problem.

Max Weitzenhoffer, the Oklahoma board of regents chairman, told CBS Sports he will try to convince influential OU president David Boren to ditch Big 12 expansion.

"Weitzenhoffer explained why the Big 12 stands to gain little in expanding to schools most commonly mentioned -- Boise State, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati,Connecticut, Houston, Memphis and South Florida, among others."

With the exception of BYU, it's sad that we've been ahead of or on equal footing with all of those schools throughout most of our history. Especially since some of them didn't even have top level football programs (or any football program) while we did, and we just happen to reside in the heart of Big 12 country. Just to beat UNT90 to the punch, thanks RV.

Why Cincy?  What do they have that beats out a Memphis, etc.  Their FB stadium does not even come close to most other B12 facilities.  Basketball is top, but thats about it. Neither of those schools will keep UT around the B12 for long.  UT will head for the hills and make a splash move just like the aggies did.

Cincy is known for good academics, while Memphis is not. What does Memphis have to offer other than past basketball history, Beale Street, and Darrell Dickey? Personally, I think UT will head west at the first opportunity. Easier for them to win out there.

Just a bit of advice here, but I would recommend preparing yourself for the worst and seeing if we can do anything better. Our schedule is brutal for our current program. We have one team, Butt Cookman, on our schedule that we should win. If we played Army, UTSA, or UTEP here, maybe we could figure on winning two or three of them, since they are probably our closest competition on the schedule right now. But they are all on the road, so maybe winning one game is reasonable to guess with this roster and brand new staff. SMU, Marshall, La Tech, USM, and MUTS are all home games, but they are all better than us to varying degrees, just like road opponents in Rice and WKU currently are as well. Florida pays the bills, obviously, so that one doesn't really count from a competitive standpoint right now.

I'd take 2 wins, with only a blowout to Florida and maybe one other opponent  and feel like we have made SIGNIFICANT progress from where we were when Littrell took over. We have earned this ranking, I'm sad to admit. Its pretty obvious that we are almost completely void of developed talent on offense, no size or speed on defense, and a brand new coaching staff led by a head coach and OC that have never been in these positions before. If you judge this season solely on wins and losses, this year will be brutal to you. but if you can look past this and see the recruiting pick up and see the offense get better as it gets used to the Air Raid, as well as development on the defense and ST, this year will be very entertaining to see how the seeds of growth for the future get planted.

Well, disagreement is a part of life. I can easily see us at 2-0 when Butt Cookman gets on the bus headed out of town. After that it might not be so pretty, but 3-1 coming home to face Middle is not out of the question for me. We shall see, but I do admit to just having a green margarita with my luncheon fajitas.

What Vtio says does not personally affect me. It just drives the dying perception of UNT down the toilet bowl ever further. And it's not as if Vito does it harshly. He does it with consistency and he's usually very subtle about it. He does nothing for promoting this program. Granted, he is a beat writer and his job is to give information to the public. In this case, it was falsified information that forms to the Vito agenda. Not only did he not need or have to write that add-on, but that add-on was 100% incorrect. If he was referring to drafted players then by all means keep beating that drum, Vito. But it wasn't. It was about training camp invitations that multiple UNT kids get almost every single year.

Very true. It's almost as if he's trying to convince 16-18 year olds who might be perusing our board that they have no chance at the next level if they come to North Texas. UTSA agenda?

Hi I am the him you are looking for so to settle this mess yes I did leave the football team yes I do love the mean green dearly yes one of the reasons I left was because KP left yes I was not looking to transfer AT ALL. Yes I felt disrespected. Now the reason I'm playing at USA is because I missed the game I only got 1 year to play game I probably won't play again. And No I wasn't going to crawl back to UNT I wanted a new scenary new opportunities so why not leave Texas and pursue a Master Degree at another school. I love the Mean green plan on becoming a booster one day but it's time for me to move forward. They will be great next year and the  years to come Coach Littrell is a great Coach I mean awesome and a great person as well, but like they told us when they fired Mac it's a buisness

I don't get the crawling back part, since you were pretty much inked in as a starter, but best of luck to you in your new environment regardless. Hopefully you opened up a slot for a couple of other guys who will end up excelling at the position. Hope that you do end up coming back and supporting the Mean Green in a big way as an alumnus.

Or those who passed basic math. The MWC media contracts are going down as well, plus unlike CUSA, the MWC doesn't share their media dollars evenly. Does anyone seriously think we would get dramatically more people willing to buy season tickets to see Fresno and Utah State than the Florida's? Actual, measurable experience has shown the answer to that is no.

It wouldn't take much more than one individual to exceed the number of season tickets purchased to see the FU's, so I'd have to disagree with that. I think we would draw much better in the MWC even if you're comparing the draw of say AF, Boise, CSU, NM, and SDSU, to the draw of our only significant CUSA "attractions" in UTSA, UTEP, LT, Middle, and Rice. I guess the "UT's" have potential, but I haven't been impressed with their attendance draw thus far.

It would be nice for once to be in a conference with some schools that are considered the top universities in their respective states. Granted they're smaller states for the most part, but most MWC members are still top dogs in their territories. It's all a moot old argument anyway, since I suspect we're a long way from even approaching their radar.
