All of you are kidding yourself if you think anyone wants to step into a job with no support from the top down. Fear of a competitive student fee shows the only way to go is down, we will soon be UTA II.

I know from experience that it's tough being a MeanGreener, but sorry, I just don't share your doomsday pessimism. I wouldn't even bother posting if I did. We're in the process of cleaning house at most top levels other than the Prez, so I'm actually becoming fairly optimistic. Time for new beginnings, and let's hope that we can manage to win a few games next fall to get things started.

He was a fund raiser at UT heading the development office, as far as I know he is currently at TCU in a similar position.  Helwig certainly didn't have heavy AD experience at UT before being given the job at NT.

RV and Helwig were both hired primarily because it was thought they could raise a lot of money for NT.   Both failed miserably, so I think having fund raising as a major priority is a mistake.   Fund raising at UT is certainly not the same as NT, sadly neither is USM.   Find someone who is a good administer, first and foremost.   Someone who is demanding of staff and can develop an effective organization to tackle fund raising, increase attendance, improve fan services and effectively market NT athletics.

I agree with all of that wholeheartedly. I also think that one of the most important attributes that we should look for in our new AD, is that this person should be someone who doesn't look down on us and is simply looking at the job as a stepping stone to greater things. I know that this characteristic can sometimes be difficult to vet, but I've often had the feeling that too many of our more recent hires just didn't give a damn. I guess I'm saying that I don't want us hiring anyone too young unless he is truly exceptional and/or has NT ties. This will be interesting, but I also have to wonder if this job is already basically filled.

-Build a solid relationship with the univeristy.

-Clean up the mess RV made out of our football schedule. You can start by dropping the Army series and a couple of those FCS games.

    -Fire Benford.

-Use marketing and sales as tools to build our athletic programs. Not as annoyances that you have to tolerate. This was one of RV's biggest faults. Your job is bigger than cultivating a few big donors and building facilities.

I don't mind the Army series so much. It generally gives us a chance at a win, and they can bring in a decent crowd. I'd also like to make it up there someday for an NT game myself.

Looking at the schedule, I don't really see any more realistic option for homecoming.  I'm guessing that a drubbing at the hands of LaTech is going to be less embarrassing than a drubbing at the hands of Bethune-Cookman.

If we get drubbed by Beth Cookman, I'll join the other 90+ percenters and leave without ever looking back. Someone will have to tap me on the shoulder in the future and tell me that we're in the Top 25 before I'll jump back on that bandwagon again.

Everyone knows the Big 12 is dying.  Would love to be a fly on the wall at the BOR meetings for Texas and Oklahoma to know which conferences are currently wooing them.

Although SEC makes the most geographic sense, my bet is Texas to the Pac-12 or ACC.  OU to either the SEC or Big Ten.  KU to ACC or Big Ten.

Everyone else in the Big 12 is left sucking hind tit.

    Prediction:
Biggest meltdown comes from Baylor fans, first, then Oklahoma State fans.

Texas likely goes west for the academics and more beatable teams, while the rest of the destinations are a mystery to me. Hopefully the implosion waits until we can somehow start winning consistently in multiple sports.

Does Vito not have an editor?  First he wrote "Tee is high, Let it fly" in another blog entry and now the first sentence of his second paragraph says "A lot has chance since then,..."

Shanbour is bigger than, or the same size as, notable players Nate Brooks, Kenny Buyers, Chad Davis, Cedric Fernandes, James Gray, Willie Ivery, Andrew Jones, Daniel Khan, Turner Smiley, etc...  Let it go.  He is roughly the same size as Russell Wilson when he entered the combine.

Agreed. The size thing seems to have turned into an obsession. Since I've never done the famous stand up test with him, I'm just guessing that he's at least around five ten and pretty solid. Good enough for the college game. Of course it's going to vary, but I actually like shorter mobile guys if they have the necessary tools. Oops. Did that sound a little....

We make jokes, but SMU draws a solid 14k for home games (not the 22k they always report). Of that 14k, about 200 will make the short trip up I35 to see their team play in a "alternate site home game."

smu's "true" football fans are all pretty much in nursing homes these days. About the only time I've seen their stadium legitimately close to half full or more is through major promotions (DISD for an SFA game) or against an old SWC foe. Considering that it's opening day, my guess would be that they will bring in a mildly decent contingent this time. By that I mean maybe a couple of thousand. I will be shocked if they bring in a crowd even remotely close to 5k (won't happen), which really should be the absolute minimum for this match up in Denton no matter how bad either one of us are.

325k could be made up with one or two guarantee basketball games. Not to mention that there's a decent chance Benford finds employment for his last contract year, mitigating the total amount UNT would owe him...

Yes, someone would likely want him as an assistant for recruiting purposes, and it's pretty clear that recruiting is what he does best. On the other hand he might prefer to take a year off and hang on the beach on our dime.

This is so much crap. UNT has the money to dump both the Hattiesburg Hustler and Benford. They just chose not to do so.

UNT chose not to spend money to improve athletics, a choice they have consistently made decade after decade after decade.

I can't believe you guys continue to lie to yourselves when the overwhelming evidence is that UNT just doesn't care about athletics and never, ever will.

Money can be moved around from department to department. The will has to be there to do so. UNT has never and will never have that will where athletics us concerned.

Maybe UNT can just claim the Cowboys as their team and drop football all together.

Then why do we even bother posting? It's over. Finito. Kaput. I guess we should just let sleeping dogs lie, and we might as well stop beating that old dead horse too.

Oops!  Meant to put this on the basketball thread.

"The Blue Raiders will travel to Oxford, Miss. to play the Rebels on Nov. 30, MTSU head coach Kermit Davis told The Daily News Journal.

The Rebels will return to Murfreesboro in 2017 and both teams will meet at Bridgestone Arena in 2018. The series will end in Oxford in 2019, Davis said.

“It’s been a really good series for us in the past,” Davis said. “(Ole Miss head coach) Andy Kennedy and I talked about restarting the series and everybody is looking for some really good RPI games.....

Seems like others can get it done.  Why not North Texas?

Maybe because Moby Rick is in charge, and he hates any Eagle that is not Golden?

I'm sure Dickey was a good coach, but to look at today's football landscape and compare it to the early 2000s is just silly.

Why do UNT fans fail to realize recruiting has changed?  The fans are just as guilty as the UNT AD.

2000s, SMU was horrible and in the WAC.  UH was horrible.  Baylor was horrible.  TCU was in the WAC and they were improving, but not even close to the household name they are now.  A&M was very average.  Okst had a history of losing.  It's not even close.  Come on...

Not trying to give anyone a pass, but who can't recruit against losers?  The biggest problem is UNT didn't capitalize when it had the chance.  Probably should have done a lot more damage during that time.

We've just never been able to throw together any consistency over a period of years. The N.O. Bowl years we're a start, but we were pretty much in a 1AA conference at the time, so we really didn't impress enough recruits (or fans) to seriously jump on board and awaken that elusive jolly green sleeping giant. That's especially true since we didn't have much in the way of big OOC wins during those bowl years. Almost makes me wish we would have stuck with DD, but of course a lot of the blame for his departure lands squarely on him. Let us hope that Seth is finally the cure, because there are more than a couple of negative words out there that rhyme with his name.
