I love North Texas.  I mean, really love North Texas.

Still, I know that our success with SL over the last three years is not on the same planet as what those coaches did at those G5 programs.

I was just pointing out that the highest level P5 programs DO actually hire directly from G5s for head coaches. I don't know that Seth has achieved enough here to make that leap, but it can happen.

I think SL has been a great coach for us, and I am pleased with his accomplishments. But at some point, even WE would have to start questioning whether or not he CAN take the next step (not unlike what happened with Dickey). I don't believe we're at that point yet, and the way the coaching carousel goes in  college football, we likely won't ever get there. It is what it is.

Yes, those coaches all had good records, but SL has a pretty impressive record, even without the bowl wins and conference championships. Those examples were just the quick ones I came up with, there are likely other examples that I just don't have recall power on. Those same programs have hired coordinators direct with no HC experience (OU notably and recently). I think that many here are overestimating an AD at any program to go and get a guy they think can win for them.

It is very unlikely a blueblood like USC or Auburn would ever hire a coach straight from a G5. But the way most coaches get to those gigs is by jumping to a lower/middle tier P5 program and have a period of consistent winning. Those are most of the teams on that list. You don't have to carry a middle tier P5 to conference championships/undefeated seasons and pass up those other bluebloods to get a blueblood gig. Consistent winning in the face of a recruiting disadvantage will get you there.

Those programs do exactly what you are describing. Urban Meyer went to Florida from a G5 (Utah was G5 at the time), UT hired Herman direct from Houston. A&M has done the same. Nebraska hired Scott Frost direct from UCF and Michigan hired Brady Hoke from SDSU. Jim Tressel went to OSU from Youngstown State. It doesn't seem to be all that unlikely to me.

Are we concerned about locker rooms in the base/pedestal of the arena or lux suites?  Seems like the arguement is shifting to a more palatable reason for a new arena.

As an armchair architect, like most of us probably are, the base of the arena which holds the guts that we're concerned about could probably be expanded if that's the real issue.  The arena sits on top of the box. The exterior walls of the base of the area could possibly be pushed all the way out to the western and northern most streets.  Doing that along with blowing out and reconfiguring interior walls (HGTV style) could probably yield a more desirable config without spending a few 100 million on a new arena.

First, I doubt that a new arena would cost more than $200M, probably not even over $150M.

Second, what you describe is likely fairly costly, possibly as much as building a new arena. The concrete mammoth that is the Super Pit would likely require a lot of additional support during excavation and build in the surrounding areas to avoid structural damage. It isn't just a matter of digging and putting in some new concrete, it was designed to use the earth around it as part of the support. It would be a long process to ensure that there is not damage to the structure. Also, blowing out some walls is likely another costly item. A building of that size requires support to bear the load of the building. I would imagine that most of the walls under the Pit are load bearing, so just bashing a hole in the wall may not be a great idea.

I don’t know.  Of all the bad decisions they have made over the years drafting LB’s hasn’t been one of them.  Not sure anyone could have done better than the evaluation of and getting Smith where they did get him and Vander Esch, who makes the Pro Bowl his rookie season?

This. Ejiya doesn't want to go to the Cowboys because it will be difficult to break through there.

It has worked somewhat for Arkansas State (Freeze, Malzahn, Harsin all being 1-year rent-a-coaches) before they finally landed Anderson.

When you make that many hires so close together, the odds that one doesn't work start to go up. Not to mention what that kind of turnover can do to recruiting. Getting our coaches poached is part of life for us, but we don't have to make it harder on ourselves.

Also to note, why would Brown want to take this job? He is already on the radar for P5s and switching jobs may make it tougher for him to succeed. I don't see him leaving Troy except to take a P5 job.

Now Brown, I have no idea.  If SL leaves I would give him a call ASAP.

Everyone keeps saying this, but I am not a fan of the idea of bringing Brown here. He is good, but I don't think he is what we need right now. Do we really want to do this again this time next year? He is already on the radar for P5 jobs, so we would likely see him get that kind of offer after next year. We should try to find someone who is likely to stay for more than one season.

I agree, but his agent could easily explain to him that his resume won’t get better than it is right now...no doubt that schedule is MUCH tougher than this year’s was.

If Chad Morris can get a P5 job with a losing record, then Seth could get a P5 job with an overall winning record.

Also, the schedule looks harder, but still looks like a winning record.

I am confused as to exactly what the "DALLAS " bowl is looking for. While ESPN may want butts in the seat, the city wants week end fans to offset their investment and increase hotel and dinning expenditures.

I don't think the city is invested in it anymore. Also, hard to have weekend fans on a Wednesday. The date of the game makes travel from out of town fans difficult and the 12:30 kickoff isn't doing them any favors. Look for this bowl to try and go with teams with local fan bases whenever possible.
