  1. I had the game on in the background and missed this somehow.  Must have left the room when this was going on.  Anyways, I just kept marveling at how engaged their crowd was DEEP into the second half of a game where they were never really within 20 points of Texas.  They got their doors blown off but that crowd stayed until the end and cheered loudly the whole time (I finally turned it off with 3 minutes or so left, so not sure how many made it to the bitter end)....but WOW.  I have to say I was impressed with that aspect.  There are not many schools or fanbases that would have provided that kind of support.  Definitely not Texas fans if the roles were reversed and the game was in Austin...and definitely not here in Denton.

Is it time to open the discussion about Ross Hodge? I mean there’s been tons of talk on here about how he was the reason for Mac’s success and we’re getting a 1 for 1 replacement if not better. I’m not so sure about that at this point. We play awful situational basketball in crunch time.

It’s year one, and he hasn’t Benford the situation yet…so No.

But watching Grant at Tech sure makes me wish he was still here.  That guy is the whole package.  Ross still has some growing to do to get to that level.

I dunno if this is making a good point for him moving to them or not.   I'm pretty sure he came here because he knew he had a great shot of starting, since we also "lost our QB room"... in saying Chandler Rogers left.  (I don't think SE is going to win us more than 2-3 games).
I believe, TXSt also had deLaura committed when CMorris committed here.   That guy has since been kicked off their team for being a scumbag.  So they still have an empty QB room.   Meanwhile, we're hedging our bets with Reese Mooney.  Doesn't exactly scream, "We're committed to CMorris!!" to me.

As for how I can definitively say TXSt better than us right now:
    UNT: 5-7 (down from 6-7)
    TXSt: 8-5 (up from 4-8)
Common opponent: both losses to UTSA, but ours was worse.

The QB in question would kinda tip the scales a little in our favor maybe, especially if TXSt goes into their season with the QBs on their current roster, I dunno.

From where I sit, TxSt was worse than us heading into the offseason before last year.  Then they brought in 50 transfers and had a pretty decent year.  A better year than we had? Yep, absolutely.

Now fast forward to this year and we are the ones bringing in 50+ new players and turning over our roster.  Who is to say we won’t reverse positions?  Is it likely?  No clue, but the way transfers have completely upended roster continuity now, I am not going to set an expectation either way until I see teams in the field.  This is where I was going with my response to your claim that they were definitely better than us.  I just don’t know how you can possibly know that at this point.

Didn't we pick up Jamario after that bowl game?

And yes, if all things were equal, you're absolutely right.   An 8-win team carrying impressive momentum (doubling their win total from the previous season) in the AAC VS SBC would likely be a no-brainer choice for the AAC school.
But things are not equal.  UNT REGRESSED from the previous season.  Our momentum is going the wrong way.

If Kinne is able to sell recruits on being the next ranked team in the SBC (like AppSt, Louisiana, Troy, Coastal, & JMU), because his team is on the up-&-up, that may weigh more than Coach Morris' pitch... whatever that is right now... who is spinning wheels as far as results on the field are concerned.

I bet Kinne's goals next year are pretty high, and not playing in the 1st Responder bowl again.
With everything we lost in the offseason, UNT's should realistically be somewhere around #hit6, which would be an improvement.

Not to mention (coming back to the original argument), the target recruit in this scenario has his father on the coaching staff of 1 of the schools now, which only adds a little more strength to TXSt's pull.

They lost their entire QB room.  I haven’t followed them enough to know who else, but every year is a toss up for every team now.  I don’t know how you can definitively say we are better or worse than they are.

I like agree with your take. CRH mentioned in his post game about guys being concerned with their stats.  If I wasn't sitting a few feet away from the bench, I would bet my life that he was talking about Edwards.  A poster once stated that Edwards is always trying to get 20.  I'm sure that poster meant it in the nicest of ways. CRH gave Robert Allen & A-Scott a mouthful at various times on the bench about it too.  Odd that he dropped that nugget to the "media", but didn't assign a name to it.  Allowed the listeners to decide Hoo he was referring to.  My immediate thought was anyone listening to this will think Edwards. No longer chasing 20.  Now chasing 30.  That was the 2nd complete floor game I have seen from Edwards.  He did it in back to back games.  Thanks CRH.

CRH also noted that "we clawed back into the game" and missed the front end of a 1 and 1.  Guess Hoo? Edwards.  Thanks Coach. 29.5 ppg this week, 4.0 boards, 3.0 assists and 1.5 turnovers on 66% shooting from 3 doesn't get you much in the appreciation category these days.

Sounds to me like you're getting attached to Edwards and already talking yourself into being able to blame the coach if/when he leaves.

He's a great player, but all I can tell you is that you better learn to root for the shirt more than the player or you're going to leave this place a jaded individual.  Having to state that out loud and believe it makes me sick.  Following kids from HS and watching them develop through college (and sometimes on to the pros) has always been the best part about following college sports...but unless something changes with regard to transfer rules and NIL, that part is dead and gone.

No, it's an all-inclusive exit fee.   They could just leave now without media rights, but the lawsuit is about all of it.

Sorry, your best teams in your new conference will soon be leaving, lol!

    Welcome to the AAC 2.0

So...should the ACC lose FSU, Clemson, Miami, UNC and VaTech....do Stanford and Cal stick around?  I get that they may still want to be associated academically with Duke, GT, WF....but is it worth it to be in such a far flung ATHLETIC conference where the TV money can't possibly make up for the travel?  If they decide it's not, does that mean they tuck tail and join the MWC or WCC?  What of the ACC remnants?  Do they play with the likes of the Sun Belt and AAC?

History says that they would raid the nearest schools from the conference one rung down in the pecking order.  If the CFP continues to allow access beyond just the SEC/Big10, then history just continues to repeat itself, impo.

Exactly why I quit responding to him.  Oh, and you're absolutely right about Josh White.  His mind would probably short circuit if he ever got a real look at the last roster JJ had.

I’ll bite - Your view of him has clouded your vision. First, he has NBA range and has hit many from NBA range in a North Texas uniform. Secondly, he not only created the space required to pull off the shot attempt, but it nearly went in. He was successful on an attempt from NBA range earlier in the contest.

We see the game differently, I get that. But to say that shot was out of control is not accurate.

As for what you are looking for, you will not get it unless you head back to Conference USA. The truth is that he is your best player - period - end of discussion. Without him, the close losses are blowout losses. You may want to go lurk around on your opponent’s message boards and garner an understanding of what they think. I’ll tell you and save you the trip “North Texas is a one man gang offensively. Awesome team defense and only one guy to worry about offensively.” That’s it. I sure hope CRH and Co. bring in some offensive weapons for next season, because right now we have one & a half.

Watching this message board eat it’s young gives validation to the transfer portal.  Now it makes sense why they left.

Reading a bit too much into my post.  Saying he’s not TP or Hamlet can be true while him still being a very good player for us.  Nowhere did I say didn’t like him or didn’t want him on the team. Just said that coaches need to help him and the team more than just turning our best scorer loose to “create”.  Your point that he’s a one man offense really only adds to what I’m saying.

You must have missed the end of the game. Edwards created his own 3 pt shot at the end of the game and missed it. It literally went in & out. Now if you want to discuss how we go from the 9:00 minute mark to 2:49 before he gets going, then I’m all ears.  Too many close games lost to not look over at the bench and ask questions.

Nope, I saw it.  He “created” an out of control shot from beyond nba range.  That’s not what we’re looking for.

  10. Edwards is awesome, but if we need a three with the last shot he can’t create it.  We need to draw up better late game offensive set plays.  We got by the last several years with Hamlet and Perry creating shots.  Coaches need to step it up to fill the void because that guy isn’t on the team.

We won the conference in 2000, were hosting the CUSA tournament and very likely would have been going to the NCAA Tourney.

I hear what you are saying, but we won the conference 3 years in a row in the regular season but only saw 1 tournament appearance out of that.  While I tend to think that that 2020 team was the best team McCasland had in his time here, there was no guarantee we were going to win the tournament....which we would have had to do b/c CUSA was a 1 bid league.

    Led?

Leading is taking a team that DOESN’T have more resources than all of its opponents to a place they haven’t been before…it is not taking an already successful program with incredible resources to the place that they will naturally reach.

I’d like to see how he’d do at a place with few resources and without an established tradition of dominance…maybe a place like North Texas.    Guess we’ll never know how that would turn out though. 🤔

How do you feel about Phil Jackson or Pep Guardiola?

  13. I missed this game, unfortunately.  Just the box score of 1-17 from 3pt is really all you need to see, though.  We're a volume 3pt shooting team and made 1.  I'm highly inclined to think and agree with those who said we must have been tired.  Shooting touch is the first thing to go when you're tired.

I remember my first IPA... what a disaster.

But I learned that, like coffee,  its a process.

Start with the absolute worst most bitter and pungent one imaginable. I recommend arrogant bastard. This is the palate killer.

Next, go cheap and simple,  something inoffensive like Sierra Nevada's entry level IPA. This acts close to a palate cleanser, but more of a palate reset.

Finish with something high end. I recommend dogfish head 90 minute.

After that, the flavor just sparks. You suddenly notice the notes and appreciate the hoppy bitterness. Or you don't, you unsophisticated donkey.

I like every single one of those.  But Dogfish 90 minute IPA is my movie watching sipper.  Damn good selection.  Can’t represent UNT, but still dang good.
