Brandan Walton’s head whipped around to see what happened as a thunderous cracking sound echoed through Humphrey Coliseum in 2011. Walton and the other members of the University of North Texas men’s basketball team were going through a light workout before a game at Mississippi State University — the kind of practice that entails nothing more than running through a few drills and going over the scouting report. Jacob Holmen never even made it to the bench for UNT’s game against the Bulldogs. “Jacob could really jump and didn’t realize how high he was,” said Walton, who was a junior at the time. “His feet went out from under him and he landed straight on the back of his head.
