  1. ...But beating UTSA in San Antonio would sure give me a big Mean Green boost heading into this offseason and recruiting, If we allow them to go 2-0 against us it would be a bitter pill. if we lose... well I hate to even think about that. I don't recall having this same type of interest in an otherwise meaningless game when we were on hind tit in the Belt years. Tells you that the Texas rivalries are a good thing for us in C-USA for sure.
  2. Much of the show was dedicated to Special Guest John Skladany who filled up the time usually reserved for player interviews. You can tell that there is a lot of love between Mac and Skladany and many battles fought over the years together. I want to commend George and Hank for giving Skladany such a well deserved send off. Yeah, Skladany was only here for 3 years but I think he will leave here with very good thoughts about UNT and his time here. I know it means a lot to Mac and I appreciate the athletic department for handling this with such class. Mac made it very clear that they need to recruit and again mentioned they would have 25 spots. He said that every position other than kicker and punter needed help. George asked him about Juco's and he said that they would look at a few as well as transfers because they need help at certain positions in order to win and go bowling again in 2015 but he reiterated that they would not be signing a lot and would stick with high school talent. He made one comment that was interesting, that there may be some guys on campus right now that the fans don't know about who could help us. In terms of recruiting timing he said that after the UTSA game they would have 12 days in Dec to recruit and then 18 in January and that was it... he said we would be making a big push and that they expected to have a good haul this year. He also spoke very highly of Connor Means and his potential. He reiterated that he would be signing a QB in this class but that it could be high school, juco or transfer.
  3. When UTSA has the ball: UNT is coming off one of its best performances of the season defensively in a 17-14 win over FIU. The Mean Green defense didnt allow any points on a day the Golden Panthers scored on a punt return and an interception return. UTSA scored just once last week in a 45-7 loss at Western Kentucky and have not scored more than 12 points in any of their last four games. UTEP shut out the Roadrunners in a 34-0 win. UNTs defensive players will be motivated to shine in the final game of defensive coordinator John Skladanys career. 4. SAN ANTONIO — Emotions have been running on high this week for individuals involved in the UTSA football program. It’s the last week for UTSA’s “Original 18″ players. In some cases, emotions have been tougher to handle for the coaches than for the players. Take, for instance, the feelings expressed Wednesday morning by UTSA defensive coordinator Neal Neathery and defensive end Cody Rogers. Neathery has always said it would be hard on the coaches to say goodbye to the last of players who came in during the fall of 2010 in the start-up program’s first practice season. “That’ll be tough,” Neathery admitted again on Wednesdy morning. “Really tough.” Read more: http://blog.mysanantonio.com/utsa/2014/11/saying-goodbye-to-the-originals-will-be-tough-for-utsa/
  5. North Texas +6 The Mean Green are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games and are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game while going 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game. For Texas-San Antonio the under is 5-0 in Roadrunners last 5 games following a S.U. loss and is 4-0 in Roadrunners last 4 games following a SU loss of more than 20 points while going 4-0 in Roadrunners last 4 games on grass. This is a game I would probably avoid but right now I lean to the points and will update by Friday. 6. The best part about recapping last season for the University of North Texas is there are only four losses to digest for the entire season. Even better only one was by double digits, to a Georgia team that was supposed to contend for the SEC West title until half the team apparently contracted the Ebola virus. That game also featured a Mean Green punt block that tied the game in the third. Oh, you want to see another highlight from that game? How about a Brelan Chancellor 99-yard kickoff return??? So yes, even though moral victories are like hooking up with your crush's sister, there were a ton of positives from that game. 7. I am receiving reports that the UNT athletic department/advancement exes are making plans to reserve a spot on the Riverwalk Friday night before the UTSA game possibly (details costs to be worked out) at the Wyndham Hotel. This is exciting because it is the start of the Ford Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony, Here is a link to their website and pictures: http://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/events/ford-holiday-river-parade-lighting-ceremony/ For over 30 years, this spectacular one-hour parade along San Antonio's River Walk has featured illuminated floats with celebrities, bands and lavishly-costumed participants. The parade goes on RAIN OR SHINE. How cool will it be for North Texas Fans to have their own section on the Riverwalk for this event? A fun evening in San Antonio and some bloody mary's the next day before an early 11am start time against the Roadrunners? I get excited thinking about how fun this trip will be. Imagine, what if the winner of this game wins C-USA West??? What a memorable and exciting weekend this could be for the Mean Green fans! More details to come but MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!! GMG!
  8. SAN ANTONIO In just four short years, UTSA has gone from being the new kid on the block in college football to the most-experienced team in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). UTSA welcomes back 54 letterwinners, including an FBS-best 21 starters (9 offense/10 defense/2 kickers) and an FBS-leading 37 seniors, from last seasons squad that posted a 7-5 record and finished second in the West Division with a 6-2 mark in their Conference USA debut. The returnees account for 92 percent of the receiving and 65 percent of the rushing yards gained, 81 percent of the scoring, 82 percent of the tackles, 83 percent of the fumble recoveries and 75 percent of the interceptions posted a year ago. The Roadrunners also boast the nations most-experienced offensive line (143 starts) and defensive backfield (133 starts) in addition to a returning receiving corps that has combined for 416 catches for 4,927 yards, which both rank third in the country. A large number of those players have been with the program since it went 4-6 during its inaugural season as a Football Championship Subdivision independent in 2011. That group has helped lead the Roadrunners to a 15-9 overall record, including nine conference victories and 13 triumphs against FBS teams, in the last two seasons, all while being picked to finish last in the Western Athletic Conference two years ago and in the West Division of Conference USA last year. Now, with a roster that features 54 upperclassmen with game experience, UTSA is picked to finish third in West by the leagues head coaches and some preseason publications even have gone as far to pick the Birds to win the division, which is a giant step forward for a program that just went through a practice season in 2010 that included 18 of this years seniors. This years schedule features 12 contests against FBS teams for the second consecutive season, including four non-conference rematches. UTSA will open the campaign at Houston in an ESPNU nationally-televised game at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, which will be the first-ever game in the brand-new TDECU Stadium. The Roadrunners return home on a short week to host Arizona in another national TV contest this time on FOX Sports 1 at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, before hitting the road for Saturday dates at Oklahoma State (Sept. 13) and the C-USA opener at Florida Atlantic (Sept. 27). UTSA closes out the non-conference slate with a home game against New Mexico on Oct. 4 and then hosts FIU in a conference matchup one week later. The Birds also host league contests against UTEP (Oct. 25), Southern Miss (Thursday, Nov. 13 on CBS Sports Network) and North Texas (Nov. 29) and will travel to Louisiana Tech (Oct. 18), Rice (Nov. 8) and conference newcomer Western Kentucky (Nov. 22). The nationally-televised C-USA Championship Game between the East and West Division winners is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6. UTSA completed its required two-year reclassification into the FBS last year, meaning the Roadrunners can be selected to compete in one of C-USAs six bowl games this December. If that happens, it will mark the quickest bowl game debut for a startup program in NCAA history. Quarterbacks For all the experience UTSA brings back, quarterback is one area that comes into the 2014 campaign with a limited amount at best. Eric Soza started 32 games and led the program to 19 wins during his three-year career. He passed for 6,952 yards and 46 touchdowns both school records and ran for 1,018 another yards and 16 scores. Tucker Carter, a redshirt senior from Allen, is penciled in as the new starter heading into fall camp and he is the only signal caller on the roster with game experience. He completed 23-of-33 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown in five games in relief of Soza last season. Carter was the 2011 Southwest Junior College Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 2,654 yards and 26 TDs for Trinity Valley Community College. Redshirt freshman Austin Robinson saw plenty of reps during spring drills and the 6-foot-3 dual threat signal caller was a Dave Campbells Texas Football Top 300 recruit out of Bellaire Episcopal High School after throwing for 1,487 yards and rushing for 801 more as a senior in 2012. True freshman Blake Bogenschutz, also a Dave Campbells Texas Football Top 300 selection, registered 9,569 passing yards, 126 TD passes and 35 wins, including the Class 3A Division I State Championship as a senior, during a decorated prep career at Carthage High School. 9. To improve on last year's 7-5 finish, including a 6-2 record in conference, the Roadrunners must keep their top players healthy. On that front, they welcomed back three starters to the first fall practice who had missed all of spring camp with injuries. Starting center Nate Leonard (foot), defensive tackle Ashaad Mabry (hernia) and safety Brian King (shoulder) opened camp on the top line of the depth chart at their respective positions. All are expected to take part in the grind of late-summer practices leading into the Aug. 29 season opener at Houston. Never shy about expressing an opinion, Leonard said UTSA plans to win the conference and even suggested that the team could make a run into the Top 25. “I think that we will finish first (in C-USA),” he said. “I'm a little surprised that we weren't picked last, like every other year. But I do believe we will win conference.” Read more: http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/college_sports/utsa/article/Notoriety-doesn-t-change-ultimate-goal-for-UTSA-5665132.php?
  10. IRVING — North Texas coach Dan McCarney on Wednesday discussed one of his most painful memories from last fall. A home loss to UTSA. The topic came up innocently enough at Conference USA media day when a reporter suggested that any one of six teams in the West could win the division this fall. “I don’t think there’s any doubt,” McCarney said. ”Who was saying anything about North Texas last year? Except, ‘We can’t wait to play ‘em and kick their ass.’ Everybody (was saying that). It’s the way it was, and we won nine games. “So, who knows who that next (upstart team) is going to be? We don’t want it at our expense, but as I mentioned earlier, the quality of the coaches in this conference … it’s a great lineup. So I think there’s going to be tremendous competition.” Read more: http://blog.mysanantonio.com/utsa/2014/07/north-texas-mccarney-suggests-that-c-usa-west-race-is-wide-open/
