  1. Pretty interesting decision for Mac and Canales to make here. Let's see what the fans think.
  2. North Texas is right back where it has spent a whole lot of time since the end of its breakout season of a year ago. The Mean Green are once again evaluating their options at quarterback, this time in the days leading up to a game against Southern Miss on Saturday at Apogee Stadium. UNT went through that process in spring practice and fall drills before settling on Josh Greer as its starter. The Mean Green switched to Dajon Williams and found some success before a flurry of key turnovers in a blowout loss to UAB on Saturday has once again put UNT back where it started. This time around Williams and career backup Andrew McNulty will compete for the starting job at a time UNT is looking to rebound from a 2-4 start. Whoever starts will get the next crack at replacing Heart of Dallas Bowl MVP Derek Thompson and bringing the Mean Green out of a two-game slide to open Conference USA play. 3. There has been a lot of talk about quarterback play over the last few weeks, and justifiably so in a season UNT must replace one of the better ones in recent Mean Green history. I bring it up because Dan McCarney talked a little bit about what he is looking for in a new starting quarterback this week during his annual State of the Green Two-A-Days Edition Address. “Our system, our identity and how we do it is to take care of the football on offense first. You have heard me say it before — a punt is a hell of a lot better than a turnover. We have a really good punter and good special teams. Don’t do something stupid because you think you are going to make a Dan Marino play or be Fran Tarkington. But along the way, we don’t need stiff back or there or a statue, a guy who can hand it off and make a couple of throws... 4. Andrew McNulty throws a pass during North Texas' spring game at Apogee Stadium. McNulty will compete with Josh Greer and Dajon Williams for the starting job in fall practice. It seems like we have been here before when it comes to UNT football. Lets turn the clock back a little. - See more at: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/06/summer-football-questions-series-part-ii-how-does-unts-qb-situation-shake-out.html/#sthash.YCOm4JuN.dpuf
  5. UNT’s spring game is scheduled for Saturday at Apogee Stadium. The game is always a key opportunity for players to make a move and improve their chances of playing heading into the fall. Who are some of the players with the most to gain/lose? Here’s a list and some thoughts on each player: 1A. Andrew McNulty – The story of the spring has been the quarterback battle between McNulty, Josh Greer and Dajon Williams. Right now it appears as if McNulty is slightly leading the race over Greer. A big game could help the McNulty secure the starting job heading into the fall. But wait -- there's more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2014/04/a-look-at-players-with-a-lot-to-gain-on-saturday.html/
  6. Senior quarterback Derek Thompson is graduating from UNT, paving the way for a four-man race to the starting position next season. The team recruited two more quarterbacks, freshman Connor Means and sophomore Josh Greer, and junior Andrew McNulty and freshman Dajon Williams return after backing up Thompson last year. The incoming players have potential on their side, while the latter look to utilize their experience at UNT to take the lead. “You talk about wide open and with Josh and Connor coming in here, I think it’s going to be really fun for our fans and coaches to watch the quarterback competition,” head coach Dan McCarney said. 7. For the last two seasons, the man handed the responsibility of carrying the Mean Green offense has been senior quarterback Derek Thompson. That could no longer be the case, as head coach Dan McCarney opened competition at the position this offseason, giving the four eligible quarterbacks on the depth chart the opportunity to compete to start week one when the University of Idaho comes to town. “Even though we started preparing for Idaho earlier this week, we still take about three fourths of the practice to compete and evaluate the position,” McCarney said. “It’s fun to see because there really is some real competition going on right now and these guys all want to be the one to lead the team.” Derek Thompson Thompson has the experience in starting and the strongest chemistry with his receivers because of his starting role the last two years with the team. In his two years as a starter, Thompson has accumulated 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions with a completion percentage of more than 57 percent. He produced just 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last year. McCarney said Thompson has been taking snaps solely with the first string offense. “As far as the quarterback position goes this is the most depth we have ever had here,” Thompson said. “Any competition is good competition and we push each other and coach each other.” Read more: http://ntdaily.com/quarterback-unt-football-team-undecided/

  9. Dan McCarney got a long look at all three quarterbacks who are in the race to start in North Texas season opener against Idaho during the Mean Greens first full scrimmage of fall practice on Saturday. What UNTs head coach saw convinced him that he hasnt seen enough yet to declare a winner. Returning starter Derek Thompson, backup Andrew McNulty and Brock Berglund, a transfer from Kansas in his first season at UNT, all saw time with UNTs first-team offense during the workout that lasted 136 plays. The Mean Green struggled to get anything going offensively with any of those quarterbacks and will head into the second week of fall camp without a clear pecking order among them as time creeps toward the Aug. 31 opener. We are inconsistent, McCarney said. Nobody is bad, but no one is playing to the level that we need them to right now. Its not any one guy. All of them need to elevate their performance and be more consistent. We are going to grade all these snaps and see where the depth chart falls heading into the second week of camp. Thompson has started each of the last two seasons and received the most time with the first-team offense among the three players competing for the starting job. Thompson has thrown for 4,551 yards in his college career and has a huge advantage over the rest of UNTs quarterbacks in terms of experience.
