UNT is getting down to the bitter end when it comes to putting its 2014 recruiting class together. The Mean Green picked up commitments from a pair of junior college players here in the last few days. We told you all about quarterback Josh Greer and linebacker A.J. Smith a couple of days ago on the blog and in the paper. Official confirmation came today, although I was told that Greer can’t sign his national letter of intent until later this month. Well, he can sign it, but I don’t think UNT can turn it in to the NCAA until later. Josh Greer was there on one of the milestone days in Dan McCarney’s first year at North Texas. Three years and three stops later, the former Arlington quarterback decided to try to help UNT reach a few more, this time as a member of the Mean Green. Greer visited UNT over the weekend and was one of two players who committed to play for the Mean Green on Monday. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M linebacker A.J. Smith also committed to UNT following his official visit last week. Oral commitments are non-binding. Both Greer and Smith said they will sign with UNT during the mid-term period that begins Wednesday and enroll at the semester break. Greer, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound sophomore, was interested in playing at UNT dating back to his time at Arlington and was there in 2011 when McCarney oversaw his first official workout during spring practice. He liked what he saw but never received a scholarship offer from UNT. UNT is in the hunt for — and is currently hosting — a junior college quarterback whose stock appears to be rising quickly. Josh Greer, a former Arlington standout who signed with UAB out of high school before spending a year at Navarro College, is on his official visit to UNT, his father, Carl Greer, confirmed Friday afternoon. We mentioned Greer briefly on the blog a few days ago when we ran through UNT’s quarterback situation. Carl Greer said that his son has visited Florida International. He cancelled a visit to Georgia State. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/12/unt-friday-recruiting-update.html/

I received a text message from UNT quarterback target Josh Greer late tonight. Greer is mulling his options and will likely make a decision tonight or tomorrow. I hope to get a heads-up when he makes the call. Just reading the tea leaves, but to me that has to be a good sign for UNT. I haven’t talked directly to Greer, but did chat with his father, who said that he has a good relationship with UNT offensive coordinator Mike Canales, who recruited him out of high school. UNT hosted four junior college players over the weekend, including two who could soon decide on a college destination. Akii Smith, a linebacker from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M; Josh Greer, a quarterback who played at UAB and Navarro; Herbert Harris, a linebacker from Hinds (Miss.) Community College and Brandon Thorpe, a defensive end from Highland (Kan.) Community College were all on campus for official visits. Of that quartet, Smith and Greer appear to be the closest to making a decision after visiting UNT. Read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2013/12/sunday-night-recruiting-update.html/
