You are ever so right. The 8-10 threads about the "NTSU" game on ponyfans.com (or the fact that several are in direct response to threads here) shows how inconsequential this game is.
Again, this game is important but we have 8-10 threads about whatever opponent we're playing that week, and there are always PF poster that visit the site of the team we are playing. It's definitely not unique to UNT.

The general "meh" attitude with which a city of millions treats them on game day already does this.
That's true when it comes to football but they certainly care about SMU basketball now. Also, ten years ago no one in DFW cared about TCU football. If we start beating schools people care about, they'll start paying attention, just like in hoops.

If we park at DART Mockingbird Station are there plenty of spaces available or would we need to get there a bit early to secure a spot there?
Also how good of an option & viable is it to maybe park the car at Northpark or somewhere and taking Uber to the stadium? I think My GF wanted to stay in that area somewhere after the game as well.
I would recommend getting there early as the Mockingbird lot will fill up. If it does, you can park at the Lovers Lane station or the Park Lane station (which is right by Northpark) and hop on the train for a short ride to Mockingbird Station. Uber from Northpark is a good option too. Only issue with that is you may have a wait getting Uber leaving the stadium.
I might have mentioned this before but Trinity Hall in Mockingbird Station is a great bar if you're looking for a spot after the game.
Is there a good spot on campus that I can just throw up some chairs and drink a few beers? I'm riding the bus down to the game, but am not interested in going to the student tailgate (on the student bus though). I figure East Side has a tailgate area. Anyone know?
You can find a spot on the boulevard. As I mentioned before, strike up a conversation with any SMU fans with a spot and they will invite you to hangout.
Also, many people are walking around and drinking. Just make sure you have a cup to put your drink in. You can't carry around bottles unless they are in a cooler.

Ah, for some reason I thought Hairopoulos was the SMU beat writer.
She was before Nichols. He started covering SMU last year.

Outside of Hairopoulos he might be the most knowledgeable on SMU too.

I assume he covers UNT for the Denton paper. He's all alone on an island with his pick. Doesn't he know you don't pick with your heart? But seriously, I'm surprised everyone else picked SMU.

How convenient!Do you anticipate basketball still being your sport in about 2 years when Brown leaves and your program is under sanctions and back to losing?
I've always preferred basketball over any other sport. I've had SMU bball tickets since I graduated in 2004. So I have sat through a lot of bad basketball over the years, but I've really enjoyed the success of the last two seasons. As for sanctions, we will likely lose one scholarship and LB might have to sit out the first few games this season. We'll be fine. There are no plans or indications that we'll go back to the pre-LB days moving forward.

Thought I'd stop by the basketball board since I'm on your site this week and basketball is my sport. I've never been to a game at UNT but my plan is to attend a home game of all the metroplex schools this season. We play at hated TCU in December so I'll definitely be at that game, and I'm going to catch a game at UNT and UTA that doesn't conflict with SMU's schedule. As always, I can't wait for the hoops season to tip.
Wow, I just looked at your OOC schedule, that's slim pickings. It reminds me of our former coach Matt Doherty's OOC schedules. Is La Tech the favorite in your conference this season? Or UAB? Maybe I'll try to get to one of those games.

Anyone know what the split was Saturday? Obviously the first game against #4 bring the masses...
Any idea why Jones stopped caring?
We went through that with Simon in the 90s. He started solid and just became down right weird and some thought hateful. The players still played their hearts out for each other, love of the game, and respect for their position coaches (who is the coach the players basically live with day in and out) even after they lost respect for the head coach. I'd wager to say SMU players felt the same way if their head coach retired on duty.
it all starting going downhill when he almost left to take the Arizona St job after the 2011 season. He informed SMU he was leaving then ASU pulled their offer. SMU let him return but things were never the same. A lot went on behind the scenes and by the end of the 2012 season he had completely checked out, his staff too. Put it this way, area golf courses got a lot of business from the SMU football coaching staff in 2013 & 2014.

An infrequent visitor, I see.
Let me let you in on a few of the views of a lots of people on this board (not me):
SMU personally kept UNT out of the old SWC when Haden Fry was at UNT. It doesn't matter if it isn't true, you will never convince them of that.
SMU personally kept UNT out of CUSA back in 2001-2002. Again, it doesn't matter if it's true or not.
SMU is a bunch of millionaires, and for the ones that aren't a millionaire, they are most definitely 30k millionaires.
SMU grads perceive themselves as better than every other grad anywhere, including Princeton or Harvard (never mind it's not where you got your degreee, but what you did with it).
SMU ducked us forever, robbing us of our rightful place in metroplex sports (even though we actually rob ourselves of that spot).
As for one particular poster on our board, I think someone from SMU slept with an ex-girlfriend of his or something.
I'm sure there is more that I'm missing. Feel free to chime in, you SMU haters.
That's quite a list. I think I'll avoid this bear trap. -

My guess is because saying that you're the best dressed band in the land is pretty uh "happy" ...who the hell wants that title??? But it does go with the pink shorts and button down shirts, with ties that are worn on your campus...
I've read several of these threads today and I've never seen a fan board stereotype SMU as much as I've seen on here. Where did all the hate come from?? I'm not saying the frat culture doesn't exist at SMU, of course it does, but it doesn't define all or even a majority of the students at SMU, and most don't have trust funds. Plus, the frat (d-bag) culture is certainly not unique to SMU. It is at every school - TCU, Baylor, UNT, UT, A&M, OU and Tech. I guarantee you'll see more khakis and pink polos on TCU's campus than SMU.
A majority of the people I met at SMU didn't come from money, including myself. I get that it is game week and y'all are probably just talking a little trash but I had to get that off my chest after reading some of the posts.

So where do we park that will be acceptable to leave the car all day while at the game?
Even if you don't take DART you can still park in the Mockingbird Station DART lot and walk or bus over.

The spots on Bishop are sold and accounted for but you can take a cooler and find a spot to hangout. Just walk around and talk to people with a spot. We are very friendly and welcoming to visiting fans as long as they are friendly.

If you ask the folks on ponyfans.com they had a very talented roster last year but June Jones was just mailing it in. I readily admit that coaching makes a big difference, but I can't see that defense making a quantum leap in one season...two to three seasons, yep, but not overnight
it's somewhere in the middle. We were not very talented last season but definitely more talented than what we showed. The players absolutely quit because June Jones quit. I don't think most outside of SMU know how truly bad the culture within the program had become under Jones.
Jones didn't recruit, didn't coach and didn't motivate players his last two, maybe three years. It is criminal how he ended things at SMU. Fortunately, he did luck into several good players last season, but most were not played - QB Davis (sat on the bench behind a walkon for half the season), WR Sutton (injured in preseason - redshirted) and TE Gaines (simply not used) to name a few. And those who did play simply didn't give the effort because there was no accountability.
Chad Morris knew this coming in and gave all players a clean slate in the spring. Some stuck around and some didn't. We still have a long way to go to get where we want to be talent wise but the culture is in place. I have no idea how that will translate in wins this season but we will not lose from a lack of effort, or a solid game plan thanks to Chad Morris.

We bought parking in Moody garage (lot B) and wondered what's the best route to get there. Do they close any roads around the stadium on game day? Thanks for any info.

if you're are going south on 75 exit Lovers. Stay on the service road to SMU Blvd (Bush Library is on this street) and take a right. You'll come to a stop sign, continue straight and Moody garage B will be on your left, right after the intramural field.
Bishop Blvd (west of the stadium) will be closed for tailgating but you'll be fine getting into the Moody garage from 75. Once you park, head west and you're right by the Blvd.

Hi. I went to SMU and my girlfriend went to UNT so we are both looking forward to Saturday.
As for DART, it is definitely the best option. We always use it for the basketball games since parking is a real issue at Moody, too. You can either walk (8-10 minutes) from Mockingbird Station or take one of the buses. Many people just walk but the buses are usually available with little to no wait. Just a guess, but they run maybe ten buses.
One thing to be aware of is it took people around 30 minutes to get through security and into the stadium right at kickoff for the Baylor game. The main reason for this was the 6:00pm start on a Friday as most people were scrambling to get there before the kick and it created a huge bottleneck. That's a big reason the stadium looked only half full at the start. This shouldn't be an issue on Saturday but give yourself some time if you're able.
Also, I hope as many of you as possible can arrive a few hours early and spend time on the boulevard. You don't have to go to a UNT space as most all SMU tents will invite you over for a drink and good conversation. We even allow TCU folks to stop by, sometimes.
