  1. Watching us destroy Tulsa (while seeing Rice go on to win as Marshall beat ECU) got me thinking about what could have been and why it wasn't. I'll say that I think that if we end up in the HOD bowl and have a HUGE showing by students, fans, and alumni, the UTSA loss may end up being a blessing in disguise as it will allow us to build a lot of buzz locally and state-wide -- and offer easy travel for recruits -- but I digress.

It seems we are a better team when we run the ball more. I realize this is an obvious statement, but I was surprised to see how much better when I looked at the respective games.

Against UTSA we attempted to throw the ball 46 times and only attempted to run it 28. - Loss

Against Tulane, we threw the ball 42 times, ran it 20. - Loss

Against Rice, we threw the ball 13 times, ran it 43. - Win

Against Tulsa, we threw the ball 26 times and ran it 50. - Win

I realize the game plan is different for each opposing defense (and UTSA is probably a better defense -- and certainly a better offense -- than Tulsa), but given the fact that a single touchdown would have tied UTSA's effort, makes you wonder if we abandoned our strength too soon and relied too heavily on our weakness.

It's all moot now. And I'm not a football coach or a football "mind"... just thought it interesting.

Good point. I'm guessing the reason we didn't throw the ball in the Rice game is that they have two of the best cornerbacks in CUSA.

  2. I'm sorry but if SMU's political connections can do what you are "maintaining", we might as well just quit playing football. If a school that has 36k students and over 200k alumni cannot overcome a non-AQ private school's influence within its own market, then we might as well just give up. SMU left the conference that has a tie-in to this bowl, which should be enough for the CUSA leadership to easily overcome with anyone on the HoD board that thinks Rice would be a more "appropriate" team to host. That would be complete 100% Bullshit if it worked out that way. I firmly believe ECU goes to the Liberty, Marshall goes to the Military, UNT goes to the HoD, Tulane goes to the NO Bowl, MUTS goes to the BBVA Compass Bowl, and Rice goes to the Hawaii Bowl.

If the HoD bowl passes on us for their bowl game, that bowl will be passing up its easiest money that it could ever make. And if they did, RV and Lee Jackson should go off as much as possible in every media form on the HoD bowl and let them clearly know that we will never accept an invite to their bowl game in the future. If we cannot get any respect in this market with our best team in 10 years and one that is 45 minutes up the road with this big of a fanbase to appeal to, again, we might as well just accept that we will never get overthe hump in the college football world if our own market won't even give us a chance to play a 3rd tier bowl game in our backyard basically. Look, in the history of this bowl, Tech vs Northwestern brought about 25k, UH vs Penn State brough about 30k, and OSU vs Purdue probably brought about the same. If they can get UNT versus Iowa, they will get at least 40k. The only thing that kills us with potential HoD attendance is if they are forced to pick an at-large team from the MAC or the SBC, as in Buffalo or Texas State.

SMU attendance vs. Connecticut (last home game): 14,639

  3. The quick out was like taking candy from a baby all game. UTSA must've called that play 25 times.

I didn't understand the lack of adjustments to the quick out and the quick screen. They didn't throw the ball down the field often enough to keep our db's so far back.

I'm in a bad mood, and still frozen. That said, it has still been a fun year

  4. This team is soft. Never expected to say that. UTSA was clearly better in every phase of the game. Good luck getting the fans who sat out in the cold to come back next season.

Not soft. It's just that we've ridden our defense all season, and they were not their normal dominant self. Offense has been the weak spot, and needs to improve fast.

  5. I"ll throw this one on the coaches. I think when I looked at this scoreboard after the first quarter, they were already at 150 yards of offense. They ran the same quick screen over and over and we didn't adjust. They obviously saw something on film that they could exploit. At least our kicker was better. I didn't expect much from the offense, so not disappointed there.

I was at the Rice game when we lost by a point. That one was just as painful.

  7. I developed a new appreciation for DT at the South Alabama game last year. My seats allowed me to see what he saw from near ground level. There was zero separation by any of the receivers-Peyton Manning could not have squeezed the ball in without picks. I think as his confidence continues to improve, we'll see continued improvement. I'm a fan.

I doubt we'll see corners the caliber of Rice's the rest of the way.

  8. As a newcomer to this forum, I'm curious about what happened during the Dodge era? I see a lot of references to it here. We were putting up some serious points initially, but things went downhill. I'm curious as to what happened (less too much sarcasm).

It's a sign that things are looking up when Dick's Sporting Goods in Arlington has a UNT rack!
