  1. exactly! Rice is one of only 60 AAU schools in the country. When Pitt and Rutgers leave, that will leave the new big hodgepodge 8+ (1+1) +1 with only 1...Tulane. CUSA will have just as many elite institutions and better regionality.

Looking at a map of the new conference in 2014-2015, you have UCF-USF, SMU-UH, and Cincy-Memphis (somewhat). That leaves leaves three without the real regional rival - Temple (which is just happy to be there), Tulane (relatively close to the Texas two), and UCONN. The "football only" members will be ECU and Navy. Annapolis is "close" to Philly so Navy/Temple can pair off as rivals and Tulane/ECU entering together can be considered a possible pair. Seems like UCONN is up there by themselves..

An argument could be made for Tulane needed a rival, cue Tulsa; but the map seems a tad bit skewed to the south and southwest from UConn's point of view. I bet you're right. UMass is probably getting a lot of push from the elder statesmen in all of this. UMass-UConn just kinda makes sense, especially if UConn "gives their word" that they aren't shopping their wares to the ACC

  2. :goodjob:

wardly, untjim1995, playoffpush..for being the voices of reason

Mean Green(went to school for 6 years),

you keep bringing this point up. Those sports are already in place. His keyword was "add". And besides the only other men's sports we have are track/golf, which cost infinitely less than baseball. In fact, track costs will be there regardless since we sport a women's team. However, baseball requires new revenue which must be sustained. Baseball is MUCH more expensive than the two current sports we already have. and I know that some on here believe that "we're good" in terms of title ix, but I wouldn't be surprised if we hear of your wish coming true within the next 2-3 years (AD stops funding men's track)

  3. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/bigeast/2013/03/04/catholic-seven-7-negotiations/1963671/

    - there is $100 million in exit fees in the current league fund

Cincy, UConn, USF to get the lion's share (45-60%)

"Catholic 7" to get around 20-40%

Temple, SMU, UCF, Memphis, cougar high..and possibly tulane, East Carolina getting around $1.5-2 mil ea

    - the basketball tournament will most likely be played at UConn in 2014

    - split will be effective July 2013

I really hope the admin at Tulsa is intelligent and remains in CUSA to grow the brand. There is no brand in the "hodgepodge whatever 8+(1+1)+1" There is a reason noone wants Temple, UConn and as West VA is finding out, constant travel is not all that its cracked up to be. I can see UMass getting that 12th football spot and remaining in the A-10 for the rest. If that happens, win-win for us.

  4. from the Belt website:

TWO TEAM TIE‐BREAKING FORMULA FOR DETERMINING TEAMS SEEDED 3 THROUGH 11
    A. Won‐lost record of head‐to‐head competition between the two teams.
    B. Winning percentage of each team vs. the first‐seeded team.
    C. Winning percentage of each team vs. the second‐seeded team.
    D. * This process continues with winning percentage vs. the third‐seeded team, fourth‐
seeded team, etc., as necessary, until the tie is broken and seeding is complete.
    E. If a tie still exists, the tie will be broken by a coin flip by the Commissioner.

We were both swept by Middle and since, per Belt seeding procedures, the West division winner automatically gets seed #2, we can finish no lower than 7th. In the event we do "tie" with South Alabama, we will get the nod because

    1) if UALR wins the west, we split with them while USA was swept

    2) if Arkansas State wins the west, we swept the Red Wolves while USA split

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that we finish 7th in the Belt and play either Troy or Louisiana

  5. we're #6 atm, w/ Florida Atlantic and South Alabama a half-game back at 9-10. If FAU beats FIU then we slide to 7th since they swept the series. I don't know how tie-breakers work if USA beats Troy and we're both 10-10. We can finish no lower than 8th, which means we get LaLa, Monroe, or Troy in the first round.

While I think Texas and A&M will always be ahead of us and Tech, TCU, Baylor are no doubt better right now, I think with a focus on even better facilities (I'm talkin bout indoor football facility specifically) we could realistically be a top 5 job in the state. I think 9 is probably about right as of now. Before getting to us, I was fully expecting Athlon to have us around #10-11 for Texas. There's no reason we shouldn't realistically be a top 63 destination in 1-A, considering where our base is.

  7. he enrolled in January 2010, after missing his entire senior football season in the fall of '09. So he basically finished school in 7 semesters, plus 3 summers mixed in there too. If you think about it, that was kinda slow..especially for a health major

  8. for the previous two posters...we covered this a month ago. why is it surprising now?

Can a baseball, basketball, men’s ice hockey or Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football student-athlete transfer and compete at a new school as a grad student?

Yes. Student-athletes in these sports that have graduated undergrad can transfer to a graduate school at another campus and play right away without submitting a waiver provided:

    • The student-athlete has one year of eligibility remaining

    • The student-athlete has not previously transferred schools

    • The original school releases the student-athlete from his or her scholarship

    *From NCAA.org FAQ

Showers is set to graduate in May, I believe, a la Garrett Gilbert from Texas to SMU.

I also thought the new school had to offer a master's degree program that the old school didn't. I think we have several master's degrees at North Texas that no other university can claim...

  9. I had not seen this post prior to my reading it about 20 seconds ago. I was stopping by because I just now saw the article on meangreensports and was gonna post the link here. Because it took the AD so long to post, I will now refrain from my original intent. I just wanted to say well done to Coach and his crew! with both 2nd place finishes, we can boast the best overall indoor track program! I'm really excited about the outdoor season, which is starting on March 15 at TCU. I think we can most definitely nab some SBC titles on our way out the door. I'm always thankful for track and field and the several meets that are within easy driving distance.

I find it a shame that someone doesn't know about indoor track. Track is one of my favorite sports for so many different reasons. Hopefully you do know that track is the oldest recorded sport, starting with the stade race (modern day 200m) around 1200 BC.

  10. B1G and SEC will have first picks. Once Delaney decides to move, Slive and company will go next...if not concurrently. Then the Big12 will be allowed to have their choice of the leftovers. In agreement with your statement about not expanding within the footprint, look for the SEC to add schools in North Carolina and Virginia. If B1G goes UNC and Virginia, expect NCState and VaTech. If B1G goes GATech and someone else (not UNC or VA), then expect UNC and Virginia to be added to the SEC. 16 seems like the number, apparently. These bigger conferences will, perhaps, be able to make it work better than good ol Karl Benson and the WAC..

  11. any news on this front? Google got me nothin'

I'm thinking they stay in the WAC for Olympic sports and a Sun Belt football-only invite. what else is there?

1.) Tulsa leaves CUSA for Big lEast and Bankowsky grabs NMSU in the west (I don't think Tulsa is going anywhere; methinks the Big lEast is more likely to add UMass for football only in 2015 *or* leave ECU football only and eventually add UMass for all sports)

2.) Big lEast adds NMSU for football only in 2015 w/Navy (ridiculous)

am I missing anything? seems like the "happy" part can't include 1-AA so we can eliminate that option. I don't think the MWC will randomly come calling. Big 12? i laughed as a I typed it. it just seems like it's bound to be the SunBelt. that leaves them with 8 all-sports members, two non-football (UALR & UTA) and 1 football-only. It makes more sense to have 8 conference games, especially since every other conference has a minimum of 8 now

  12. if it results in a WIN then the money spent is well worth it. Heck, I would be perfectly fine with playing this game against a lower tier FBS opponent AND also bringing in an FCS team like TX Southern for an additional win. Just win, baby. I come to Apogee to watch the Mean Green curb stomp whoever they're playing. It could be Forestburg HS 6man team for all i care

  13. are we bringing new donors into the fold? or are you referring to potential future donors? I had assumed (yes, i know what they say about assuming) that the donors who are stepping up for baseball are already current big time donors. that's awesome if the baseball donors are new, though! i take back my reservations if baseball is being completely funded by a new source.

thanks for the info regarding Title IX. that's good to know. would hate to see us lose a sport..

also, isn't it a bit sad that our topic over the bball practice facility has turned into a baseball conversation? last thoughts for the post: it doesn't matter now whether I think baseball is a wise move or not...apparently it is coming soon from things i've SIAP. the boys of spring will have my full support when that time comes. I will still continue to feel like we're not going as far as we should with football, though. ie indoor facility, more support staff, better home match-ups for the fans, sicker uniforms, better travel arrangements for the athletes...

  14. baseball...what a waste of money. spend that cash on football! we shouldn't be adding sports until we've got an indoor facility and we're paying coaches like we're big time. instead, we'll be funding a non-revenue sport with what little resources we have. donors may be funding the start up for baseball, but will they be covering the total expenses every year? doubtful. football first

  15. i think New Caledonia still has a chance to grab the OFC spot in the playoff if they can pull of the road upset next month..

stinks that we lost the game, especially after grabbing the 1-nil lead on a deuce goal, but I think we'll be fine. Just win at home and steal a few (or take the draws) on the road. I even tried to put my pessimistic mode on and I still couldn't really see a way where we finish 5th or 6th. I am NOT saying that I'm ok with 4th...far from it, but even in my most dire scenarios I can't see us not finishing top 4 in the hex. I like our chances in the playoff, even if it comes to that. Just a super early prediction, with 9 games to go (I like predictions):

    1. U.S.

    2. Panama

    3. Mexico

    4. Jamaica

    5. Honduras

    6. Costa Rica

I really have no clue. I hope (and think) that we'll get on track and grab the top spot, I think Panama is gonna start rolling (predict they won't lose at home) to grab their first berth ever, Mexico for the 6th time in a row, and then Jamaica off to play NZ ( don't think New Caledonia pulls off the W in Mordor), gave the nod to Honduras over CR because of their recent win over us, plus the Ticos have a tough finishing stretch.
