  1. Shoot me know or shoot me later, but I am beginning to like the idea of keeping Coach Canales around as the new HC more and more every day. Got to meet him personally and speak briefly with him last evening at the BB game...yes, he was at the BB game...like I said, I am beginning to like the idea more and more, and as most know, I was not onboard with this idea at first.

We'll see how it ends, but for now, I'm good with Coach Canales.

    Let the harping begin...3...2...1......

It's always a gamble when you hire an inexperienced assistant for the head coach position. They are two completely different jobs so it is an unknown whether the Peter Principle will kick in.

Can UNT afford another risky hire?

  2. Bob Stoops walked into Oklahoma right as the BCS started handing out multi million dollar checks just for being in a BCS conference.

???? What does this have to do with anything? Do you really think OU didn't have enough money in their athletic budget and somehow checks from the BCS (whatever that means) made the difference in Bob winning a NC his second year at OU?

That won't be the situation whoever our new coach is will walk into.

No, the new coach will have a brand new stadium, a commitment to win from the administration, $1,000,000.00 for assistant coach's salaries and talent rich Dallas-Ft Worth a stones throw away. And he will be competing in the Sun Belt instead of the Big 12.

Truth is, whoever takes over the NT job in 2011 will have a much tougher job than the guy who took it over in 1973.

I strongly disagree with your assessment. I believe UNT has everything they need to dominate the Sun Belt Conference except the right coach.

The money gap is bigger than it ever was, same with exposure, and Denton is no longer a captive audience.

    What money gap?

  3. ...he would quit to become Iowa's AD.

I know people love Hayden Fry, and I can understand why, because he is one of the high points of North Texas football.

But why do we obssess over him? The world of college football is totally different than it was then. Yes some of his ideas, especially engaging the community are a good idea, especially from the role of AD, which is what he also was. The football coach more than anything needs to recruit, teach, adjust, win.

Alexander the Great's army steamrolled most of the world, but if the US Army tried to copy him now, we would find horse calvary and the sarissa spear a little lacking. College football isn't the same, Denton isn't the same, hell, people aren't the same anymore. A new coach should be looking forward, not backwards.

    Hmmmm...

Do you think Bob Stoops would agree with your assessment?

  4. Meyer had engineered an incredible turnaround at Bowling Green for two years as head coach before being hired by Utah.

Franchione was head coach for six years at New Mexico and led them to a bowl game before being hired by TCU.

Koetter had been a coordinator for 11 seasons before being hired by Boise State.

Of those four, Leavitt is the only one without strong credentials when he was hired as head coach. But he was hired for a Division I-AA independent that was just getting started.

UNT needs a coach with skins on the wall; somebody who has proven they can win at the FBS level.

I'm very familiar personally with Dirk Koetter and his wife. She came into my restaurant in Columbia, Missouri regularly and he was the OC at Mizzou on Bob Stull's staff which ran the program into the ground (15-38-2). That coaching staff believed there was no need to play defense in the Big 8, so they came in and moved the best athletes on defense over to the offensive side of the ball. They believed all you had to do was outscore Missouri's opponents with a passing offense so in their minds there was no need for a rushing game. Someone forgot to tell Dirk that OU and Nebraska were very big on defense and had incredible team speed. Also, it came as a shock to the "Boys from South Texas" that it's kind of difficult to pass the football up north in November in cold, cold places like Lincoln, Nebraska and Ames, Iowa as well as on the cold and windy plains of Kansas in Manhattan.

Meahwhile at Kansas State...Leavitt had the exact same credentials as Bob Stoops, Mike Stoops and Mark Mangino who were given much of the credit for one of the greatest turnarounds in college football history at Kansas State.

"And then, the two of us hired Bill Snyder."

Snyder, who was offensive coordinator at Iowa under Hayden Fry, wanted competitive salaries for his assistant coaches.

"We can't be so much further below Nebraska and Oklahoma or Missouri or Colorado," Wefald said. "So we had to at least ratchet them up.

"I think by raising salaries for assistant coaches, Bill was able to go out and hire just a crackerjack group of assistants. We had Bob Stoops, who's now (head coach) at Oklahoma, for six years; we had Mike Stoops, who's (head coach) at Arizona, for five or six years; we had Mark Mangino, who went with Stoops to Oklahoma but then ended up as head coach at Kansas, and we had Jim Leavitt, who went to South Florida to start the football program there.

"By the way, (Leavitt) would be a good (Gophers) prospect."

Then, for Wefald, came improving the K-State stadium that was virtually rebuilt between 1990 and 1992.

"It seats about the same number of fans as the University of Minnesota, which is maybe the nicest 50,000-seat stadium in America," Wefald said. "I remember we used the 'Field of Dreams' as the metaphor: 'Build it and they will come.' And, of course, they will only come if you win."

  5. There's no irony in it at all. The article is about coaches who lost their jobs due to player abuse. Mike Canales has never lost a job due to player abuse. Jim Leavitt, Mark Mangino, and Mike Leach have. Therefore, there is no stigma attached to his name that an athletic director would have to consider when hiring him.

You believe there is no stigma when an assistant coach is fired from the program?

    Interesting...

  6. I have no idea who we should hire, but I do know the stakes are very high for those who will hire. Hope we get the right one.

On Another Front: Here is one of my favorite folks songs from the 70's when 316 Fry Street was my home for awhile and life much simpler & care-free, and no, there is no hidden message in these lyrics concerning coaches searches, either. Its just one of my favorite songs-that's all. :flowers:

    Meanings Will Change

    ©1971 Yarone Music

From the album "Paul and..." by Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary MUSIC NOTE: From the album that produced one of the most played or sung wedding songs to this day, ie, "The Wedding Song" (There Is Love) written by Paul Stookey. He also plays a great 12-string guitar that he calls--Noel. Music is great therapy--yes, yes.

Meanings will change as you learn to grow

And all that is known becomes suddenly old

And that which you had to last you 'til the end

Turns out to be just a passing friend

And would you spend your life away

    Collecting great treasures

    So you'd be safe someday?

And when you're old, and when you're gray

meanings will change; life's just that way

    When you're finally sure

    You think you understand

All about living and life's demands

Someone will touch you and you'll see again

Meanings will change; you just can't win

So don't you worry 'bout your money friend

Don't you worry 'bout your fame

It's all a conspiracy; all part of a game

And you're the conspirator; the silent enemy

and you're the victim. You finally see

After you get to where you have to be

After you own everything you see

    When meanings don't change

    About the things you knew

You might as well die, it's all over for you

If you're wise and if you know

What few things are real which never grow old

Then take them now and make you a start

With a simple life and a simple heart.

    PMG...

I have no idea who or what your are in real life, but what I do know is I would love to sit down and drink beer with you and FightingRick until they kick us out of the tavern. You are one dry, sarcastic, cynical sumbitch and I like that about you.

  7. Just curious, but how do you KNOW that people, sponsors, donors, and recruits would come to North Texas with Mike Leach? I don't doubt that there will be some curious football fans who would be interested in attending a game or two just to see what's going on, but if we don't win immediately, I doubt they'll continue coming to games just for Leach. Leach would also have to put together a new staff, so I don't see how that's any different than Canales or any other current coordinator coming in.

For the sake of argument, can we say that Frank Solich is a relatively well known name? Maybe he's not Mike Leach around here, but I'll bet people up in the Midwest know who he is. When he was fired from Nebraska and subsequently hired at Ohio, did the sponsors, donors, and recruits suddenly spike?

I damn sure know who Solich is and all of us at Mizzou could not believe the dumbass Nebraska AD Pederson not only fired him, but the current Cobsucker coach named Pelini as well. Now how dumb is that?

  8. One point in his favor, he knows what the program has and lacks from seeing it first hand and not just from the outside like other candidates would be evaluating it.

Everyone knows what the program has. The question is can Canales go out and get what the program doesn't have...bigger and better talent as well as better coaches?

  9. "I would rather defend a coaches' record than try to explain why a coach was involved in some of the instances these guys reportedly were involved in," said the SEC A.D. "I think that's a hard call."

These guys have the same hill to climb as former Colorado coach Gary Barnett, who turned around Northwestern and kept Colorado winning.

No charges were ever filed in relation to Katie Hnida's allegations against Barnett and the Colorado program. She never even filed a civil suit, and refused to name who her alleged rapists were.

Still, with no charges or suits attached to the scandal, Colorado abandoned Gary Barnett and he hasn't been given a second chance.

    Ironic...

Jim Leavitt gave Mike Canales a second chance...twice...after he was fired both times.

  10. Maybe there is more than one Will Florin, attorney-at-law, in Florida. The one you are talking about is a employment contract attorney. I think TFLF is talking about this one that specializes in Malpractice with 80% of his cases in medical malpractice. The one referenced certainly not an employment contact attorney.

It doesn't matter what he is talking about, he knows zip, nada, zilch about the law. I get the feeling if he actually did attend law school he flunked out the first semester. He really exposes his ignorance with every post.

Florin's firm focuses on unusual mix

Florin is president of Florin Roebig, a firm with 12 lawyers including his brother Wolfgang and two other shareholders.

The firm has a somewhat unusual mix of specialties — personal injury, medical malpractice and employment law. The mix may explain why Florin and his office attract plaintiffs such as Leavitt and Landers.

  11. NEWSFLASH - You don't need to file a motion in limine because mediations are already confidential.

Leavitt's attorney had the opportunity to get Leavitt a settlement and he didn't do it. Mangino's did. There's nothing legally shocking or noteworthy to it. It's potentially stupid and career-limiting, but there's no special legal twisting that needs to be done for a plaintiffs attorney to do stupid things.

You are simply full of Bevo poo and have no idea what you're talking about.

Will Florin is a well known, well respected employment contract attorney in the entire state of Florida, while a first year law student knows more about contracts and negotiations than do you.

  12. Or, one might argue what Joel Miller himself argued - he wasn't in it for the money and wanted to put the whole matter behind him.

And, things have worked out for Joel Miller, too. Skip Holtz put him on scholarship this season:

    http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/aug/20/210123/miller-gets-closure-in-usf-camp/sports-colleges-bulls/

    http://www.tampabay.com/sports/college/article1116866.ece

Also, Miller's attorney said all along that all they sought was an apology. When Leavitt wouldn't give it, they dropped the case. But, as statutes of limitations go, he has two years from incident to decide whether or not to continue the case.

By the way, Mark Mangino and his attorney felt the same way as Joel Miller - get it done and move on. You have a real special case in Leavitt and his attorney.

He has no case. A first year law student could figure that out.
