  1. It was a good scrimmage. Offense won early and D won late. Offense wasn't very consistent, but they broke some nice TD plays before the D got warmed up. D was very consistent once they got settled in. Very surprised and happy about the secondary; they played well. The whole D played solid and as a unit. The O was off on it's timing, which made them inconsistent, but that can be corrected.

I'd say the O looked rusty and the D looked more polished. That is good news; in seasons past the O looked great in these early scrimmages and that didn't bode well for the D. Instead, in this scrimmage the D looked good and the O was just a bit off (it's all about timing).

  2. I am more interested in % of starts from 2011 returning.

Pretty good for the O. The Line has solid starts now, everyone has at least one season and Fortenberry and Feeley have more, QB solid, Receivers solid, Running Backs weak, TE is solid. The D has some good starts on the line and LBs, but weak in Secondary.

We can't lose at LSU! If we get beat up, we all expected that. If we don't, it'll propel us into the rest of the season.

  3. Todd Dodge hangover to a certain extent - when he was in the death spiral he went heavy juco and that hurt our numbers. He also had a pretty fair amount of high school recruits who did not stay for a myriad of academic or other reasons. Mid majors, especially mid majors who sign a lot of jucos or high academic risks will go through this more often than power programs. Troy is a fairly good example and even Muts to a certain extent in our conference.

When Dodge was heading into his 4th year, I pointed out here and in other places that we were really hurting the UNT program, as well as the new coach that took his place and the opening of our new stadium. The reason was, Dodge HAD to win to save his job and he was willing to mortgage the future of the program to do it via juco. Dodge knew that he could not get it done with the players he had and could not get it done in time through high school recruits. My understanding was that the board did not want to eat two years of Dodge's contract (5 yr total), and by giving him the 4th year it allowed us to prop up compensation for his replacement. Did anyone really believe that Dodge was about to turn a corner in that final 4th year? When his assistants were leaving like rats from a sinking ship? Not really but since we needed him to stay so we could lure a better coach to replace him we went with it.

I still say if we had been able to payoff Dodge after year 3 and hire Mac we would be in a much better place right now. The argument to this is we didn't have the money to do it at the time and I think the student fees and when they were available may have come into this equation as well. I will agree with this, when Mac came on board we DRAMATICALLY enhanced our compensation package not just for Mac but for all of the assistants. So the outcome of giving Dodge a 4th year turned out good, it was just a year too late.

Before someone hits me for beating the Dodge horse let me say I liked the guy, he was a class act and so was his son. He just made some bad decisions that came back to haunt him and in turn this program. We are still trying to recover. That's why I am so ever so grateful to have Mac at the helm. GMG!

Mac ran some boys off too. I don't think they deserved to be playing, but they would be 4th & 5th year seniors now.

  4. Fun to guess about these guys. Feldt will never start for UNT. Lemon may be All Conf, but olny because Mac has hyped him from the start (he was a good freshman though). Johnson was a pretty bad RT, but came alive as a LT last year, who'd a thought. Feeley will do well as RT this year, but some of the DEs he'll play against are real BEASTS (LSU dude is 1st round NFL). The guy that most people overlook and shouldn't is Fortenberry. Don't be surprised to see him on Sundays the season after this. No other lineman is even close. Lemon maybe in 2/3 years if he can learn the plays.

  5. If you really watched the games last year you would have noticed that the game Lance sat out had the most creative and prolific offense of the year. Thompson was hot most of the game and receivers stepped up. The running game was the secondary choice and it flourished because the passing game was so effective. I liked Lance, but basing our entire offense on him was only good for him. Chico knows what to do with Thompson.

  6. If the middle becomes a threat in our offense, that will take some pressure off the receivers. Sampson is a legitimate 6-5, is he not? Would be nice to have the tight end be enough of a threat to where he and/or Brelan Chancellor draw lots of single coverage.

Think about this, with a receiving corp beat up and in disarray last year, we still went 5-7. For whatever reason, even losing Lance Dunbar, I'm not as worried yet about the offense. Defense's proving will be pass rush and coverage...pass rush and coverage...same as always. Can those improve enough to pick up one or two more wins last year?

The most creative and prolific offense we ran last year was in the game Lance sat out. I attribute that to every opposing team in every other game just keying on Lance the whole game, which worked. Chico had his best play calling game in that one and Thompson was on his game.

  7. I've referenced this before and I think it's a great idea. At KState they have a Loyalty Season ticket program. If you go to at least 5 of 6 home games your season ticket price is $99 from year to year. In our case something like $50-$75 seems like a fair price. I've been told that might be cheaping down the stadium and the program. My thoughts these coaches and these players don't give a dam how much you paid to get in the stadium they just want you there cheering for the team. Now addressing getting these students to come to a game for free, I give up on how to fix that problem because that blows my mind.

Free or heavily discounted tickets to any Denton High School student or letter jacket wearers (recruiting bonus) or Denton resident. Another possibility would be to give those Wing tickets out to local merchants so they can give them to their loyal customers or run a special with. Get Denton involved somehow. We may not see revenue from the tickets, but we will from concessions and parking.

  8. What makes anyone think that Feldt will see the field? He hasn't played a down in two years and really didn't have a sterling off-season. That is why Mac said he is moved to guard. He is down in the depth chart, not replacing Y'Barbo or Lemon.

The line up will be exactly as it was last year with Feeley filling in at tackle. That is if Lemon heals from his surgery.

This is correct as it stands right now.

    Johnson - YBarbo - Fort - Lemon - Feeley

Johnson and YBarbo did a very nice job on the left once they got in sync. Lemon got his butt kicked some, but for a frosh he did alright and should be quite good this coming year. Fort is like a rock in the middle and Feeley should have played at right guard last year. He'll do well at RT this year.

  9. I can't imagine how bad Osbourne must be to have these two guys start in front of him! I still think dt is our best option, but he is hardly DI talent. He should have had so many picks tonight because of stupid decisions and horrible throws, but he continues to bitch at teammates for lining up in the wrong spot or not catching the ball. The defense wasn't bad tonight and ull isn't that good. We beat them with Riley, without doubt!

This doesn't all go on the "qb" though, canales has tucked his offensive game in between his legs and has started calling games like he's winning the entire game. There's no creativity at all! Where are the shuttle passes that worked to perfection last year? I'm pissed at the offense and canales! We should have won this game!!

And I haven't seen mcnulty do much this season to deserve this much playing time. I'm not saying he can't develop, but stop playing him this year, please! We need to recruit a jc qb.

You guys have missed the point entirely. The play calling was OK. We threw on first and second down, we used our tight ends, we tried some trickeration, we ran play action and this DelGado kid might be a receiver after all. Offense was much more creative than I've seen in the last few years. I just think the line is a little weak; not horrible, just not as experienced as it should be. They do not pick up blitzes and they are easily confused!

Next; if you think the QB job is about talent or hard work, you're kidding yourselves. McNulty will be your starting QB next year, no matter what. Mac must have promised his Dad to get him down here, but Thompson and Osborn will be out. Mac has a pass this year and he's taking it; simple as that.

You think that LA-LA Coach makes excuses because he got left with less than stellar talent or bad mouths his kids in the news or runs them off to make room for his recruits or starts freshmen when he doesn't have to or won't use his best back-up QB? Absolutely not; those kids were playing their asses off for that guy in the 4th quarter and that's what won the game. Ball players get tired of being called inferior by their coach. They start to believe it, which is the basis of a losing team.

Mac may provide a winning team in about 3 years, but it'll be a cutthroat program, just like it is now. Be careful what "We" wish for.

  10. ...Whatever you're doing in practice that is so horrible, stop doing that!

Now is your golden opportunity to wrestle the starting spot away from a shaky Thompson and an overwhelmed McNulty. Go prove yourself in practice this week. :gym:

This is ridiculous! Osborne can't win the job; Mac won't let him. McNulty is the future; it's a done deal and it has nothing to do with talent or hard work. If I was Thompson or Osborne, I'd be looking to transfer as soon as possible.

  11. Royce Hill is also far from NFL material. They have scored 2TD's today and both have been on Royce Hil.

The Freshman was doing well and it would be nice to get him some good playing time!

You don't pull your most consistent and best DB because he gets beat in one on one coverage; you help him with a safety over the top. The other corner has been getting killed all year and Royce has been kicking people's butts except for the two best receivers we've faced. If you really watched the DB play in every game you'd notice our safeties are non-existent.

  12. Did not do this last week because a victory against FAU was a given. Now for the weekend at hand.

If we beat Lala then __________.

If we lose to Lala then _________.

I watched LaLa against Troy last week and LaLa is for real. They played well and are very disciplined...well coached. So, to beat them, we're going to have to be on top of our game.

  13. While yes, Tulsa has lost 3 games this season, they lost to teams ranked in the top 8. OK State, OU, Boise. Tulsa has been a team that's consistently ranked around the top 25 for several years now. This game ended up pretty much like what should have been expected. Sucks to say.

    Ridiculous!

  14. Don't know, but I wish a journalist had the balls to ask. Osborn is a three star recruit with a year of JUCO ball under his belt, looks 100% better than McNulty in the games and hasn't made critical mistakes that, honestly, not only McNulty has made but also Thompson.

McNulty was a two star recruit out of Iowa that, other than scoring on a running play against Houston, has shown very little in a game. I don't give a damn what kind of practice player he is, he's not producing when it counts. Brent Osborn should be ahead of McNulty based on game production and McNulty should have been red-shirted this year.

Thompson and Osborn should start looking at other programs as soon as they can. They won't be playing next year at all.

  15. I think the big problem tonight- 1) We threw everything we had at the first half and it showed. 2) We just didn't have the horses to keep up with a more talented and experienced Houston team. There's a reason they're probably going to end up well into the top 20 this year.

I saw a lot of improvement today. I think there's a lot to look forward to throughout the season. I just hope that it wasn't the first game phenomenan and we have empty seats throughout the rest of the year. I saw some bad tackling, some stupid mistakes, blown coverage, but admittedly our defense leaves much to be desired.

We can go ahead and take what we can from next week, but I feel pretty good going into the Indiana game. I think we're setting up nicely for conference play, and if we can maintain this kind of a home crowd, it'll be a pretty huge improvement from last year.

Much better job of coaching. Still problems with Mac's plans to play freshmen instead of playing experience. He didn't have to burn McNaulty's redshirt while he has Osborne. He's intent upon playing the guys he recruited. I stick with my original assessment...he's taking a pass on this year. Might pay off in 2 years, but he has a few good upper classmen sitting that have been loyal and hardworking and deserve to play. Somebody always get's screwed when a new coach comes in. Switching Johnson and Tomilinson worked well. Johnson get's off the ball much better on the left side.

The big piece that'll be missing for the rest of the season is Jeremy Phillips. He broke his thumb and tore up his knee from a cheap shot. Surgery on the thumb and MRI to tell him how much time he'll miss. Tough loss of the leading tackler.

  16. In your "expert" opinion. I'm sure you think that TD left the pantry stocked and we have real superb talent to work with.

It's actually pretty simple...adjust when you're getting your ass kicked. Defense did except for covering Hilton! Now the Offense has to. We don't have a mobile QB or a very good O-Line, so the Spread Offense has very little chance of being successful. If we insist on running it, it needs to be filled with alternative plays. Go under center once in awhile, throw a screen, run play action, go misdirection, draw, when your right tackle is weak, put a tight end in to help and run that way. Coaches need to understand their talent level and adjust.

From now on every opponent's defense will watch that film and say, "we got this", load up for the run out of the spread because that's what they're gonna do.

And, I actually think this is possible, but coaches gotta have some balls and be flexible.

    Thanks for the "expert" compliment!

  17. One play didn't lose this game.

    Carry on.

No it didn't, but give yourself a chance; don't run the same play you've been running over and over. Do something different out of the formation. It's quite difficult to run play action out of that formation, but it can be done. FIU's D was able to just tee-off on that play because they knew where it was going. The hole that was supposed to be there was completely stuffed with FIU before the ball carrier got the ball. If you're going to run that play and not care what the D is going to do, you have to have the horses up front. I'm sorry, but that was poorly coached.

  18. I agree with the consistency that Chico brings, but is it so simple? Someone with football experience help me out.

Is an OC allowed full control, or can it vary from coach to coach?**

Does it make a big difference if you have a new OLine coach? Does that apply to us?

What about other O position coaches? Did we not have turnover in WR/QB/TE/RB coaches?

    ** Will we ever know?

I'm as frustrated as the next guy regarding our offensive performance Thursday. But I'm not about to assume that retaining Chico means these players are going through the same system/routines as last year. Then again, maybe they are...

It was essentially the same offense as last year and FIU was able to tee off on many of our plays because they knew them (well coached). There was a little Tight End play, which is different. The difference in this offense was that the O-line was manhandled and some of that has to do with FIU knowing what we were going to do, but the freshmen got murdered and the right tackle play was very poor, especially after JJ went out. I'd say most of that is coaching. Wrong people in the wrong place.

Then there was the D. Even the announcers said put a spy on the great WR. Want to know why they said that? Because that's what you do when someone is killing you. It may backfire if the other team is well coached, but who cares. That guy is KILLING you!

Lastly, FIU is going to give everybody fits this year. That QB and WR combo is devastating and their D wasn't bad at all.

  19. If JJ is seriously injured, our offensive line is in big trouble. Our defensive line is just not good. If we don't improve in the trenches, and quickly, we could be in big trouble. I'm still holding out hope though.

McCarney is coaching like he's got a pass this year.

  20. Tackle: Tackle is the most questionable of the positions along the line. While we have a very talented, all-conference candidate on one side, we have a complete question mark on the other. Tomlinson will get the job done, no questions asked. He is our second best lineman, behind Johnson, and he runs a very close race with him. Tomlinson has great feet and is very strong, but I hear he has a questionable work ethic. That doesn't effect his on-field performance, but his potential is sky-high if he works hard. if he put the work in, he could potentially get drafted. However, on the other side at left tackle, we have what is, by far the biggest question mark on the offense. Unfortunately, this is also one of the most important positions on offense. Don't believe me? Just go look up the player salaries in the NFL. Other than QB, you may not find a higher paid position. Our left tackle as of now is Antonio Johnson. He has unlimited potential because he is very athletic for his size(6'5, 285), but he's not very strong. I think him and Ayodele Adepipe will compete for the starting job, even though they both have huge holes in their game. Left tackle is the only position on the entire offense that I don't feel good about. As for everyone else on the depth chart, again, I can't comment, because I haven't seen them play.

    Starter Position Rating: 6.5/10

    Backup Position Rating: 5/10

    Overall Position Rating: 6/10

    Starter: Antonio Johnson

    Starter: Matt Tomlinson

    2: Ayodele Adepipe

    2: Grant Shaw

Guard: At guard, we have Aaron Fortenberry and Mason Y'Barbo. These are 2 of the 4 guys I feel comfortable with on the offensive line, along with Johnson and Tomlinson. Fortenberry is taller but they are both very similar in that they are both pretty big, strong guys that will do a fine job paving holes for Dunbar, and protecting for Thompson. As for the backups, Feeley has experience as a starter, so I would feel comfortable with him in the lineup because he is another big body who can move people. As for the rest, they are freshmen, so I know nothing. However, they are very large, and that is one of the improvements McCarney has made over the previous staff; recruiting larger football players.

    Starter: Aaron Fortenberry

    Starter: Mason Y'Barbo

    2: Coleman Feeley

    2: Cyril Lemon/ Travis Ellard

    Starter Position Rating: 8/10

    Backup Position Rating: 7/10

    Overall Position Rating: 7.5/10

Center: At center, we have one of our most experienced and best linemen. JJ missed all of last year, save for a few snaps at Clemson. However, he's been in the offense for 4 years, and knows the playbook in and out. He's a technician. He's our smallest O-lineman, but his knowledge of the game makes up for that, and then some. He's the guy that I trust the most on the entire offensive line. We're in good shape with him starting. Technically, our backup is Nic Summerfield. However, if JJ gets hurt, I expect Fortenberry or Y'Barbo to shift to the center position, because we are much deeper at guard than we are at center. I don't expect Summerfield to play a snap under any circumstance, so I'm going to base my backup rating on Y'Barbo and Fortenberry.

    Starter: JJ Johnson

    2: Nic Summerfield

    Starter Position Rating: 8.5/10

    Backup Position Rating: 7.75/10

    Overall Position Rating: 8.25/10

This post has been promoted to an article

Staring 5 - Tomlinson - Feeley - Johnson - Y'Barbo - Fortenberry. Any of these 5 can play any of the O-line positions. This gives us the best experience, strength and quick feet.
