  1. Soccer is a fall sport. We need another spring sport for fans plus the SBC is the #9 ranked college baseball conference. I'd vote in favor of adding baseball.

At this point, the next sport will be baseball. And, to add baseball, we have to either cut a men's sport or add another women's sport. If you also added men's soccer, again, we'd have to cut another men's sport or add another women's sport. Right now, we're kinda running out of women's sports that are cost-effective. Title IX requires that we balance a lot of factors, including money spent, number of scholarships, etc.

  2. Regardless of stat lines, I think Ben Bell played his heart out. He carried that team when he was in, as any point guard should. Williams and Wooden both played strong and didn't back down; Howerton also gave some good minutes. Bottom line, they all played to win and the effort was there. I agree there were turnovers and a lot of unnecessary mistakes, but I think they all realize that and they know they had what it takes to play with Memphis and know what to work on to improve. Great season for the team and hoping they can keep it going next year.

  3. We had a great time. There were a lot of fans in N.O. some I had never seen but most I recognized. Bourbon St. was rockin Thursday night. It was too quick of a trip of course, wished I could have at least stayed for the remainder of the friday games but we had to get back for a baseball game this morning. I have several photos I was to post and will do later.

As for the game, I was very, very impressed with our team's ability to run with the #5 team in the nation for a while. When NT went up by 5 in the first half it felt like we were riding on a magic carpet because everyone's spirit was so high. I felt, even with all that didn't go right at times that had we hit the slam and brought it within 2 that the game could have gone a different way. Most of the Nevada and Memphis people I talked to had a lot of great things to say about NT and I think the Mean Green impressed those who knew nothing about us. I'll say that JJ is still a very favorable guy in Memphis Tiger land as everyone seemed to remember him and respect him to this day for what he did for them in the past. It was wonderful to see Dr. B, LJ, RV and several BOR members and the rest of the Mean Green Nation all letting the team hear their support. The Pit Crew and Talons turned out very well for this game. We had a lot of students down there. The band, cheerleaders, dance team and Scrappy all represented us very well. Proud to just be a part of all of that, again.

Overall great trip. I'm looking forward to going back soon.

I'll post some pictures when I catch up on some sleep. Hope everyone got home safe and sound.

It was a good game and New Orleans was fun, as always. Memphis fans were all over the place, but they all had kind words for UNT and the team's effort. Here's to hoping for more fun times next year.

  4. Is a ticket good for all four of the first round games, or just one game ? I'd like to see the Aggies as long as we're both there at the same time.

You buy tickets for a "session". So you can get tickets to the afternoon session (two games) or the evening session (two games), whichever one we wind up in.

  5. This was the team we wanted...the only problem is all they seem to do is win lately.

They could easily hit a wall when they hit us. Or I can hope.

It's hard to say how good Memphis is at this point. They haven't really played anyone notable lately (in my mind) other than Gonzaga (and they're having a down year). Also, Memphis' strength of schedule is horrible. They had a nice win against Kentucky early, but Kentucky didn't really hit their stride until after their first ten-fifteen games. Otherwise, Memphis had losses to Tenn, G Tech and Arizona. Those teams don't strike me as the type of teams that a #2 seed should be struggling against so, in my mind, Memphis is a over-rated team (and the weakest #2 seed we could possibly be facing). Of course, one might argue that Memphis didn't really hit their stride until they hit their conference schedule. But, even then, when they were playing their supposed best, they managed only a 1 point win over Gonzaga (hardly strikes me as a huge statement win).

It all comes down to who would you rather face right now? The defending champion Florida Gators with all their starters back? Kansas that won the Big 12 regular season and conference tournaments knocking off a tough UT team? Ohio State that just won the Big 10 regular season and conference tournmants? North Carolina (also winning their regular season and conference championships)? There's no way I'd rather play any of those teams over a #2.

Going farther, we have UCLA, the PAC 10 champs (with several other PAC 10 teams in the NCAA tournament), Wisconsin (#2 in the Big 10 and reached the Big 10 tourney final - another conference with several teams in the NCAA tournament), Georgetown (just rolled through the Big East tournament - a conference with 6 teams in the NCAA tournament) and then Memphis (the sole representative of the #11 (not #1, #2, #3, #4, etc. conference in the nation, CUSA - making them a one bid league, just like the Sunbelt).

All that long-windedness results in me just saying that I'm very happy with this matchup :)

  6. That's for sure. The Orange are going to be pissed.

Or, they may not care anymore. Lots of teams look at the NIT as a less than adequate consolation prize. It's up to the coaches to make them believe otherwise, but I can see how the team might be so disappointed that they mail it in at this point.

  7. decisions on the seeds have already been made by this point. i'm thinking we're very likely a 16 at this point. the only way i could see our seed changing (regardless of movement in rpi) is if a final change requires someone to move regions and requires one of the 15/16's to move around to account for it. also, in the committees eyes, there's no reason to move someone from a 16 to a 15 at the last second b/c seeds can go up/down 1 for balance and to put you into a certain region.

  8. Former Ryan standout Greg Garden is headed back to Denton to play for his hometown team once again -- only this time it will be at the college level.

Garden spent the last year at the Naval Academy but confirmed on Sunday night that he is transferring to North Texas to play safety. The 5-11, 187-pound two-time all-district selection with the Raiders was among three players who said over the weekend that they intended to spend their college careers at UNT.

  9. Lord knows we all gripe about everything around here so I thought I'd point out something very positive about our FAU win. For the game, FAU shot 46% on 2's, 50% on 3's, and nearly 60% on free throws. Those type of numbers are very respectable and typically garner wins. Why then the big final score disparity in NT's favor? Although we only averaged in mid 40% for both 2's and 3's, and 73% on free throws overall, our second half output was outstanding: 60% for 2's, 70% on 3's, and 84% on free throws. WOW! Keep mind also we achieved this with a struggling KD. When you put up these kind of stats, there is little your opponent can do, except to try to match or exceed the output. We basically did to FAU what the Arkansas teams did to us. I really hope we keep this up for tonight's game.

I'm still concerned about our 3 point line defense. Everyone seems to hit like crazy against us, which makes it that much harder to win games.

  10. It won't surprise me that we start seeing Robert DiNiro and Al Pacino (as well as Marlon Brando's ghost) at Fouts Field this Fall, it really won't.

Aren't we all now having fun for a change with a a brighter "higher profile" future on our horizon as the main reason for all this fun? The timing of all this could not have been any better.

The next big story at UNT in the Mean Green football campaign of Fall 2007 is when we warp speed our per home game attendance figures dramatically upward in record-shattering numbers. This will be the icing on a cake that has long needed such icing as that.

For what it's worth regarding attendance, I've heard from one person that we've already sold more tickets already for this upcoming season than ever before in UNT's history.
