  1. I actually like Oregon's experimentation with their football uni's...especially the matte yellow alternate they have now.

I think Oregon's base white uniforms with the white helmets are the best uni in all of college football... Love 'em...!!

But anytime they trot out there in that yellow they look like a bunch of ripening bananas...

    Terrible look...

  2. How many times is his current program even brought up in this? And it's an entire story about wanting to leave your current job!? Just find it interesting.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/columns/story?columnist=oconnor_ian&id=5766026

Are you saying that Thomas may not be fully committed to the fortunes of FIU and that they may have made a mistake in hiring a "name" coach who really has his eyes on something else and will jump ship the minute that opportunity is given him...??

Regardless of the state of his current program...

There are probably enough red flags here that a lesson can be extracted...

  3. It would be better for our RPI to lose to a really good SEC school than to beat a really poor one.

Actually any road win against a team perceived to be better than you is healthy for RPI...

And any road win period helps... Road losses don't hurt that much...

The ones that kill your RPI are the home wins against weak sisters...

There was a great article someone wrote last year suggesting that mid-major teams would be smart to just become road warriors out of conference...

Schedule road games against reasonable opponents so your RPI at worst doesn't dip...

    Not a terrible idea...

You'd have to win your fair share of those games to make it worth it, but that's the price...

This is from the Wikipedia article about the formula:

"For Division 1 NCAA Men's basketball, the WP factor of the RPI was updated in 2004 to account for differences in home, away, and neutral games. A home win now counts as 0.6 win, while a road win counts as 1.4 wins. Inversely, a home loss equals 1.4 losses, while a road loss counts as 0.6 loss. A neutral game counts as 1 win or 1 loss. Note that this location adjustment applies only to the WP factor and not the OWP and OOWP factors. Only games against Division 1 teams are included for all RPI factors. As an example, if a team loses to Duke at home, beats them away, and then loses to Cincinnati away, their record would be 1-2. Considering the weighted aspect of the WP, their winning percentage is 1.4 / (1.4 + 1.4 + 0.6) = 0.4117"

It seems that you had damn well better win those home games and play and win as many of those road games as you can...

  4. I was a student at UNT during the filming of Necessary Roughness...

I remember seeing the cast walking around different parts of the campus...

Also, Sinbad did something for the Fry Street Fair that year, though the Fair was held in the parking lot of the place where I worked, O'Riley's Billiards...

After the shooting they set up a store in the same shopping center that sold sets, props, etc. from the movie...

Somewhere I still have one of the helmets that I got in exchange for free pool...

  5. PS: What is the highest ranked SBC football team in that 10 year history? I don't think we've ever had a team in the Top 25 now have we?

If we go by the website posted by MeanGreen19, then Middle Tennessee was 23rd last year with a 10-3 record...

Not AP or Coaches, but it uses a similar metric to RPI or something...

However, I have some concerns about the veracity of that website...

  6. In 2005 UTEP had one of the uglier incidents in their basketball history when Senior Jason Williams punched Freshman Stefon Jackson during practice and broke his jaw...

There were some really ugly rumors going around about the cause of the punch and Williams was suspended indefinitely...

Jackson, one of the Miners' best ever recruits, begged coach Doc Sadler to re-instate Williams for the good of the team saying that the issue was between the two of them and was being dealt with by them...

Sadler brought Williams back to the team after he had missed only one game and Jackson returned after he missed eight games with a wired jaw...

Both players were completely different players from that point on and the Miners went on to have an excellent season with no further disruptions... Both players were model citizens and representatives of the university...

I think every coach needs to examine every situation closely to determine what to do...

I would doubt any of us are intimate with what happened at Memphis, so we aren't the best judges of what should be done or whether it was handled properly...

Coach Jones has exhibited the ability to let situations rule decisions and I assume he will continue to do so in the near and far future...

  7. 2) Mike Leech is trouble. Yes, he will have you on ESPN every day of the week and will more than likely fill the stadium in the beginning but remember his teams never really could play defense on a consistent basis. He would more than likely look down on us and not really understand what it is we want to accomplish here concerning UNT Football.

Say what you want about Mike Leach, but he had an incredible record against teams he was supposed to beat... And that is huge if you are trying to get to bowl games every year...

Tech would sweep their OOC schedule, beat up on the weak sisters of the Big 12 and then struggle (but not always) against the Texas, Oklahoma, OSU's of the conference...

9-3 every season sounds pretty good to me...

Leach wouldn't be my automatic first choice, but I think any school who is looking for a splash and to improve dramatically quickly you can't deny the evidence...

  8. This WKU game will actually be interesting for a couple of reasons...

    1) Is this the beginning of an audition for Mike Canales or is he merely caretaking the rest of the season...?? Has he been given any indication that he will at least be considered in the hiring process...??

I think if he is auditioning we can at the least expect to see an exciting brand of football... It remains to be seen if they can correct the execution and discipline issues and overcome the injuries...

    2) We may be witnessing the turning of the corner for the Hilltoppers... I have thought for the last couple of years that once they won a game they were going to be well on their way to respectability and were going to be a difficult team to beat in the future...

If UNT doesn't get quite serious now with football, there is every reason to believe a doormat like WKU will pass them in the SBC hierarchy... How many of us thought that would EVER happen...??

So, I for one will be tuned into the radio listening to George and Hank...

Hope it is an exciting game...

    Go Mean Green...!!

  9. There is no way on God's green earth the BCS is going to let TCU and Boise St. play each other in the championship game...

I'm not even joking when I say that I think they will elevate a 3 loss team over one or the other before they let them play each other...

It looks very much like they won't have to do something drastic like that, but I think they would come up with a reason to not play the game before they invited Boise St. and TCU to play for it...

    Enough is enough...

    Time for a playoff already...

  10. Dear RV:

After spending countless time sifting through fan suggestions for our new head coach, I have summarized the last week of speculation down to the following:

    1) Some fans want Mike Leach, some fans don't

    2) Some fans want Dennis Franchione, some fans don't

    3) Some fans want Jim Leavitt, some fans don't

    4) Some fans want Jeff Bower, some fans don't

    5) Some fans want Steve Kragthorpe, some fans don't

    6) Some fans want Major Applewhite, some fans don't

    7) Some fans want an up-and-coming BCS assistant coach, some fans don't

    8) NOBODY wants Deion Sanders

So there you have it... We as fans have once again come together, united and shown you how we feel...

    Don't hire Deion Sanders...

Anything else is open to debate...

**P.S. - There is no charge for my report... Consider it my gift to you in these trying times...

  11. Only problem with Leavitt is that his teams were the hare sprinting out of the gates and then would falter when they got to around 5-0 or so and then tank the rest of the season. Not sure why they tanked, but look at some of their fast starts and then faltering at the end.

We certainly can't have any sprinting to 5-0 around here...

    How about sprinting to 6-37...??

If we were to go 5-0 at the start of next season we'd name the stadium after him no matter what happened after that...

  12. This is an attractive job, will include some attractive money and is the kind of thing that I think a lot of coaches will find appealing. ...far more than Norm gives NT credit for.

It is an attractive job for a coach that is willing to be part of a building process... And it's possible that a lot of our wish list of "name" coaches might not be interested in that process... No matter the money...

His contention that we are best served hiring young and hungry makes a lot of sense... Someone like that will, hopefully, build the team in his own vision and image...

Now, the hard part is find the right one...

    Much easier said than done...
