  1. PS: How did U of Central Florida get the UT Longhorns to come to their own stadium's Grand Opening? What did that take? Anyone know? Has UNT officials ever asked UT if they'd come help us celebrate our new stadium? Sometimes it just a mere matter of who you know at the other school's staff that does the job and maybe thats how UCF got the Horns to their cookie cutter erector set stadium.

In 2008 UT also played UTEP at the Sun Bowl in El Paso...

It was a 2-1 deal where UTEP returned to Austin in 2009 and will do so again in the future...

While it's true that the Sun Bowl holds over 50,000, there aren't many other reasons for UT to agree to play in El Paso...

Quite often UT will play these games as a reward to large alumni bases that live in the area...

Say what you want about the Longhorns, they will play road games against lesser opponents...

  2. Lets say FAU keeps winning and attendance winds up averageing 2200. That would still be 4th worst in the 'Belt in terms of actual seats sold, (according to the chart above) but would represent 81% capacity equaling a packed, rocking arena.

According to their website "The Burrow" seats 5,000...

    So 2200 wouldn't be 81%...

    Am I missing something...??

  3. I am going to jump up on my bowl game soapbox...

    Clear a path people...!!

I used to feel (a few years ago) that the number of bowl games was silly and, frankly, ridiculous...

But then a funny thing happened...

In 2004 the only two teams I really care about in college football, UTEP and UNT, BOTH got invited to bowl games...

UNT was ending a three year run of New Orleans Bowl appearances and UTEP was going to a bowl for the first time since 2000...

And it was then that I realized that the ONLY thing these teams have to play for are conference championships and bowl games... PERIOD...

As it is currently structured, neither UNT nor UTEP will ever sniff anything resembling a National Championship, or even a CHANCE to compete for one... No matter what they do in the regular season...

If the NCAA wants to have a 16 team playoff where EVERY conference champion is an automatic invite then I am all for it... That means the champions of the WAC, Sun Belt, Conference USA and MAC as well as the AQ's...

And if the NCAA decides that those conferences shouldn't get automatic bids, then they should just simply revoke the FBS status of the schools in those conferences because they are royally screwing them anyway and wasting their time and their fans' time...

At no level of competition for anything that I can think of is there a system that tells a participant that they will pay as much, work as hard and abide by all the same regulations and standards as all the other participants but at the end of the season they have no chance to compete for an overall championship while some of the other participants (hand chosen) will...

    It's asinine...

My dream (far-fetched I know) is that the non-AQ's will pull out of the FBS and make a division of their own where they play each other and play for a championship at the end...

Make the AQ's play nothing but each other and see how well they like it...

No soft OOC schedules for them... Nothing but monsters and well funded programs...

It would be a fan's dream, but a university's nightmare...

Imagine that September 5 loss meaning your season was basically over... And every September 5 and all dates after that you were going to have to play a team of reasoble quality...

    A pipe dream, I know...

At any rate, in the system in which we currently live the bowls are the only reward we have for the student athletes at the smaller schools...

To them being "bowl eligible" actually means something...

    So let them begin...

I plan on watching every last single one of them as much as I can...

    And attending 2 in person...

  4. I am going to 3 bowl games this year and already have the tickets for all three...

I paid $35 a seat for 2 tickets to the New Mexico Bowl to see UTEP and BYU...

I paid $60 a seat for 4 tickets to the Sun Bowl to see Notre Dame and Miami...

and finally I just bought tickets to the FBS Championship game in Frisco... 2 seats at $40 a seat...

The Armed Forces Bowl organizers had better hope the alumns show up in full force at the prices previously mentioned...

And I have lived in the Dallas area for nearly 12 years and have never been able to afford a Cotton Bowl ticket...

  5. I guess JJ is following the Dean Smith model - which Roy Williams might do to an even larger degree than his mentor. The Dean was FAMOUS for saving TO's till the end of game situation.

Don Haskins at UTEP hung onto his timeouts as well...

In fact, if his team needed a breather or a shake-up he would sometimes argue with the refs for a while and try and get a technical so he could gather his team together during the hub bub...

I have seen his star pupil, Tim Floyd, do it to a much lesser degree this season...

You don't see that much anymore...

  6. The maximum number of scholarships for college baseball is 11.7. For basketball, it's 13. The coaching staff is about the same size, but how much they cost obviously depends.

I wasn't sure about the scholarships, but the team needs to be equipped for a full roster...

Most D1 baseball programs carry between 20-35 players on the team...

    And what about insurance...??

What would the university's liability be for the players that are not on scholarship...??

I'm not being snide, I really don't know the answer...

  7. ***************************************************************************

When I was VP at El Paso CC about 10 years ago, they added a baseball program...spent $350,000 in one year not counting coaches salary.

Bob Stull told me that the experience EPCC had with starting the baseball program, and Title IX, is why UTEP will never add baseball back...

I remember the first year of EPCC baseball where the players were doing some construction and maintenance on the field...

For 99% of all colleges and universities, baseball is a financial anchor...

  8. Ugh no way, I prefer to tongue lash the refs when they deserve it. For some reason they frequently do deserve it when we play UTA. Now kissing my wife on the other hand...well even then our kids might want to die of embarrassment.

You're only allowed to kiss your spouse (and embarrass your kids) if, as a family, you are willing to pay full boat for the Fouts Field Finale...

    I read that somewhere...

    Probably on a web page...

  9. "Yeah unfortunately Troy doesn't exactly have alumni like Don Henley, Meatloaf and Anne Rice."

Perhaps not, but they do boast 2 different winners on Survivor... How weird is that...??

And DeMarcus Ware and Osi Umenyiora...

    Not exactly Meatloaf true, but...

  10. Look at the track record of all UNT sports for the past two decades. There have been some highs for sure, but overall our success has been dismal. IMHO, this is why the local Dentonites have not embraced their hometown team in force. 100,000+ people in Denton- we should be drawing a minimum of 5,000 for basketball games, regardless of the opponent. This has got to change, somehow, someway.

To achieve the types of numbers we would like to see for both football and basketball UNT Athletics needs to be seen in the city of Denton not as A thing to do, but as THE thing to do...

Somewhere along the line Mean Green Athletics has to be perceived as an understood "must see/must do" event...

Sustained competitive success will help with that...

We want to use Boise St. as model for athletic success, but they are barely averaging 2000 for a basketball team that is 6-0...

Football is THE thing to do in Boise and the university is working hard to make basketball the same thing...

Right now they are fighting the fact that the basketball team has no history of success...

We are in the same boat...

A run of NCAA tournament bids and a first round win would change all that... Fast...
