  1. Just make the student fee $40 a semester and be done with it. So much whining and bickering over it.

It doesn't matter anyway. We're not a part of the Criminal 5, so we will be shuffled back into the morass of Leftover 5 + FCS once the Criminal 5 eliminate the scholarship limit and start writing paychecks to the players.

Also, make a drop dead bottom level of giving $50, okay? Don't bitch about "looking cheap." Just do it. Money is money is money.

Look, we run a commercial insurance agency, and business insurance goes in cycles. At various times, carrier appetite increases or decreases for any given risk.

For example, six years ago, I could write a Lessor's Risk Only (shopping centers, office buildings, office warehouses, etc. occupied by tenants, not the building owners) policy with any damn company you could name - The Hartford, Travelers, CNA, Zurich, et. al. All standard markets.

Today, you come to me with an LRO risk, and I'm likely having to stick you with a non-standard carrier (Underwriters at Lloyds of London, Nautilus, USLI, etc.) because the standard carrier are largely out of the LRO game right now because of hail losses incurred from 2010-2013.

With non-standard carriers, my commission is half of what it is for a standard carrier. But, I place the business anyway because the 10% of X (premium) that they pay, though not as much as 20% of X, is more than 0% of X.

So, what I'm saying is, get everyone in the game, even those we currently turn up our nose to because they won't give at the lowest $125 a year level.

Three people signing up at $50 is more than one at $125. Get money! Get the money of the masses.

  2. One of the thing that bugs me is when people say, "oh if we just do this or that, we'll be a lot better off". When I got into coaching that's one of the first things I found out. It ain't that simple. We had a situation one year exactly like the one Mac is dealing with here. We had lost some really good seniors from the previous year's team and although we had some good young players on the team, they were just that, young. We finished that year with a 5-5 record and all of a sudden according to some of the fans we didn't have a damn clue what we were doing even though we had gone 12-1 the year before. We worked our asses off in off-season right along with the kids and went 13-1. We moved the ball and scored and could consistently stop people. What was the difference? We returned a lot of experienced players that we didn't have the year before. They were bigger, faster and more confident. I think Mac and the coaches are just as disappointed as any of you guys are. I think this off-season will determine how this program moves forward. If the returning players buy in you're probably going to like what you see next year. Mac hasn't all of a sudden become a bad coach. He's got young players this year that will be better next year.

So..the guys who have been here three or four years waiting to start, they haven't "bought in" yet?

    Odd.

If so, here's to hoping Mac recruits a class full of kids who buy in from the first day they set foot on campus.

Now, coach, explain the experienced offensive line not being able to block this year to us.

  3. Maybe not, but could it be we never have a legitimate QB who can make more than 2 reads that gives the offense the opportunity of distribution. If Chico kind of knew what he was doing he would never make Harris the 1st read. Harris is going to find the ball bc he gets open, but why force the ball into him when he will be in double coverage or at the very least have a safety leaning to him. Make someone else the first read to make a conscious effort to distribute the ball. Ball distribution does wonders for any passing game.

...if you have receivers who can run routes properly and get open. We don't have much of that, and haven't for well over a decade - maybe two or three.

Right now, we have a bevy of receivers who don't get open and three quarterbacks who "distribute" the ball to opposing defenses via interceptions and fumbles.

  4. I think it is time to bring this video back(especially from the 3:03 mark) and play it for the players before this week of practice and directly before we take the field against FAU. They need to be reminded of how great they can be when they play hard-hitting defense and dominant special teams. We are down this year but we aren't far off. McNulty or Dajon will get in a groove and the Jimmy show is always great. Let's get back in the win column and knock around some Floridians in the process.

    @ 2:57 says it all.

  5. I'm in the early stages of planning a long road trip in December. It looks like EP is a prime candidate for an overnight stopover. I was laughing that we've got this hotel booking thing as a company perk (meh, not earth shattering prices). I looked up rates in EP, and half of them were located in Juarez! Yeeeahhh... Let me get right on that!

Then again, I might keep going a few more miles into New Mexico that night so I can stop somewhere and engage in the never ending battle between chile colorado v. chile verde. Mmm... New Mexico.

Again, it's a shame what's happened to Juarez. When I was a kid, we lived in El Paso for a year. My dad would take us there a lot. He'd have lunch there, buy cigarettes, and whatnot. Cheap and safe. Friendly people. Good days, back then.

Crazy. Mexico ate itself a long time ago, though. America isn't too far behind it. Maybe a couple to three decades. Places like Detroit are already there.

  6. Never back away from an opportunity to visit Carlsbad. Get past the initial walk over bat shit, and you're good to go!

My kids love it. Tempted to try and make it, but will fight a wife-battle to do it. She has a nephew at SFA and wants us to go visit him that weekend. Either way, there will be better scenery than around here, I suppose - trees or mountains, trees or mountains.

And, oddly enough, I love the drive to El Paso. Don't know why, but long drives out west have never bothered me.

  7. A huge JUCO haul. With a solid QB that has played in a juco program with a reputation. 2 DT, 2 DE and 1 safety to boost talent and quality depth. That is where we need significant help. KState lives off of JUCOS, we need to do the same; at least for the foreseeable future until we start signing classes that stick together and pan out.

I thought that Canales was a Mormon and a Mexican. That said, I wonder why he can't find a QB out west from one of those Tongan JUCOs like Snow JC in Utah.

I'd also try to find a QB in the most football talent-rich state in the union: Florida.

  8. I like the way Derek Thompson played on the field and carried himself off the field.

First, despite having just one go-to guy for the entirety of his career, he became UNT's greatest I-A/FBS quarterback.

Second, he never publicly complained on his twitter account or his facebook.

I miss Derek Thompson as our quarterback. What a mountain we have to climb to find another one like him...even one worthy enough to stand in his legacy's awesome shadow.

These interception-touchdown throwers on the 2014 roster...they're giving me the blues. They'll never lead us to bowl victories or break any records. Sorry to be so truthful.

They all need to transfer out to the Texas A&M-Commerces, Sam Houston States, and Sul Rosses or the football world. I'd wager McMurry and Hardin Simmons will be in need of a quarterback or two in 2015. I'd donate our whole rosterful except Means.

  9. I have no idea how often scholarships are pulled without a head coaching change? It might happen a lot, but I haven't heard about it. I don't think that a school having a hard time recruiting QBs wants to become known for cutting people who don't perform. I know for certain high school coaches would tell their players to avoid such a place!

Good. We don't need high school coaches who oversell their lazy QBs.

  10. Last year we were sucessful because we had seniors making plays in their final year. While they led the team, it also allowed some younger players to also pitch in.

We cannot expect young players to carry the team and perform better than the vets.

    Our vets this year are:

    A. Johnson

    M. Ybarbo

    S. McKinney

    C. Lemon

    R. Pegram

    D. Mason

    A. Lincoln

    D. Akunne

    L. Lee

    J. Jones

Who is having an all conference year out if this group? There are some injury issues, but it seems as if no one wants to bring up this point. This is their final year and they were supposed to lead this team. How can they get on younger players about their performance, when they have been average and below?

During the bye week I hope this group can heal up and salvage their final season and hit6.

No matter how bad everyone else sucks, they can come back and improve next season. This is the 2014 seniors last shot.

    Is this a trick question?

  11. Mac also has to worry about his job beyond MiniMac's eligibility.

I don't think Greer, Williams, or McNulty are FBS material, so I think the competition is open in the spring. I'd cut Greer and Williams loose art the end of the year by not renewing their scholarships.

I'd pull McNulty's as well since he has been here for four years. He should be getting his degree and voluntarily hanging up his cleats.

  12. It's your ego that won't let you admit you are wrong, no matter the evidence that is presented in front of you.

Why have we changed QBs 3 times this year and none last year?

People on here are really really football stupid.

Are you talking about the ones who said that during the Dodge Era we had QBs who would win one for ya? Which of the five wins was he talking about?

  13. I'd bet that McNulty will start next year...Greer or WIlliams won't be here, but Mini Mac will be. And he'll be sold to everyone as the next Derek Thompson--a senior QB that will manage the offense. Just wait...

I doubt it. Means can't be worse than those three, and we'll likely sign one or two others. No way Mac goes into December/January believing he has what he needs and QB on the roster either in terms of the starter or depth.

Scholarships are only year grants. It time for McCarney to not renew a couple or three.

And if you think that's harsh, consider...students on academic scholarship must maintain a certain GPA to keep their academic scholarships. So, why should athletes who repeatedly prove that they can't cut it at this level continue to get free rides? Cut them lose and let them transfer to FCS or DII schools better suited for the talent levels.

  14. Scratching my head. I didn't expect to be world killers this season but 0-4 in CUSA? And I think it's more than just DT and the other seniors who graduated. Somehow this program lost their mojo in less than a years time. We need to figure out why and get it fixed real fast.

That tends to happen when you lose the best QB in the program's history...plus, one of the best tacklers...plus, one of the best receivers/returners...plus, six of the seven front seven...plus, a pretty solid safety...plus, one of the Top 10 running backs in school history.

We do have a good kicker, though! That's an upgrade from last year!

Anyway, I'll just say that the only real head scratcher for me is the offensive line. They have fallen completely off the map. So, much for experience.

  15. Norm is saying what I said yesterday in my post. SMU will never be in a power conference again. Pay Mack Brown (or anyone else) whatever you want. It won't change anything for SMU. They are too small. They don't offer anything of major advantages that conferences look for. Even TCU, which got into the Big XII because of necessity, will get left behind, most likely with the Big XII's GOR expires. But even if the big XII doesn't die off, they ain't taking freaking SMU. They already have that market covered. Hell, if they won't take UH, then SMU has no chance. And UH isn't moving up to the Big XII, either.

Again, it sounds awesome to pay that kind of money for a coach--maybe it pays off like Larry Brown has for the basketball program. but football and basketball within the NCAA are about as comparable as apples and oranges.

The reason the Big 12 won't take Houston or SMU is that they don't need them. Big 12 already is more of a sell in those media markets than SMU or Houston.
