  1. Here's a pretty stupid question from a guy who knows pretty much nothing about the DT position other than you have to be really big and really strong, and I guess pretty fast. Is there really any technique to playing DT? Or is it, well just push the guy in front of you back and get to the other guy holding the ball?  laugh.gif

Well, you have to do this while making sure that the OLineman (or possibly 2) does not get his hands locked onto you, get under your pads and knock you off the ball, or toss you onto the turf.

While you're making sure this isn't happening, you have to determine within about 1 second--by looking over or around a 300 lb guy trying to tear your head off--where the ball is, and where it's going, and get to that point or perhaps run a stunt that the D coach has put in for you to run. If you don't do it, or do it incorrectly, you have possibly opened a hole for a back to run through for big yardage. If the OLineman on you does his job well, then the same result can occur.

So yeah, it's a little more than that. tongue.gif

  2. Frankly, I'm excited about the potential of this class. To me, it's obvious that UNT's addressing bulk up front and speed at skill positions. It does appear however, that the OL, DL and QB will again be the "wait and see" positions next year.

    I'm encouraged, for sure. cool.gif

  3. Anyone see this in the paper?

Seems like their leaving off Utah and Auburn in there on the Billboard as well but still pretty funny to go to such lengths to stick it to another school?  Says the Billboard will go up next to USC's campus. laugh.gif

This was all over Orangebloods after the RB.

On the website is a link to "trojanwire.com", with "Official" Three-Pete merchandise.

In the comments section the following is posted:

  4. Whoa Nellie!  Then you all go to the River Oaks Steak House, LongJim?  IMO, the best steak in Fort Worth and very inexpensive as well.

Of course, out here in Weatherford, the Mesquite Grill (off FW Highway) is sure hard to beat.

Yep, good prices and friendly service over there, PMG. Good value at the bowling alley, too. But as for Weatherford, my favorite place to go over there is the Malt Shoppe. My dad introduced me to that place, where he was grabbing grub in the '50's. We often stop and grab a burger there on the way out to Mineral Wells or Abilene.

  5. We don't get to watch much bowling on TV these days.  I love the sport and have been taking the F5 whenever I can.  As luck would have it, I have to drive to Mineral Wells to go to the nearest alley since they closed the one down here in Weatherford many years ago.

Hey, you can always visit the Cowtown over here in River Oaks! laugh.gif Grab a steak at the River Oaks Steak House, and jog back down Jacksboro Hwy to 820.

  6. What a great story.

    What a boor. tongue.gif

It must've. Why else would The Dallas Morning News produce a special section on the Longhorns' Rose Bowl victory and a full-page color poster of Young?

Hmm. Just guessing, but perhaps because it's the first national championship in football for any Texas-based D1 university in 35 years?

Why else would the racks of Longhorns Rose Bowl T-shirts at the Kroger near The Village be empty the day after the game when the day before they were almost full?

Maybe because lots of impressionable teen-agers and klingons who like to "belong" jumped on the bandwagon. What's news about this phenomenon, Ritchie? C'mon Richie, you were a Cure-baby back in the '80's--admit it! tongue.gif

Why else would shameless family restaurants like Beef O' Brady's in McKinney institute a cover charge during the national championship game? Why else would a local Ford dealership run radio ads congratulating "our national champs"? And why else would Dallas' No. 1 sports radio station, 1310 AM The Ticket, carry Young's press conferences live?

    See: Business 101, Richie.

As former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman said back in 1991, "This isn't a football town, it's a winners town."

    Hammer. Nail.

Unless UT's Dallas-based enrollment/alumni has suddenly spiked to around, oh, say 1.2 million, I'm guessing a lot of you have enjoyed a happy new year hijacking a successful athletic team for the purpose of selfish emotional fulfillment.

Boo-freakin' hoo, scrooge. tongue.gif (Note to Richie: I was excited and proud when the Spurs and Rockets won NBA titles, too, but I'm not sure if I felt it in my soul, or anything.) laugh.gif

"It's not right at all, but it's easy to explain," said Ticket co-host Greg Williams. "UT is the face of college football in this state. I don't care if you're from Texas A&M or Sul Ross or are just a marginal fan with no affiliation, it's easy to get your arms around Texas winning the championship."

    Hammer. Nail.

San Francisco: "Damn, I can't wait for the day when our team wins."

Dallas: "Yee-haw! At least they're from Texas!"

    laugh.gif

And your local paper served as choreographer to the whole coattail caravan, all but screaming "We Win!" On Monday, a full 13 days after Texas' 41-38 victory over USC, the DMN was still running photos of Young on page 1A. On its Web site, the paper continues to offer a special section dedicated to the Longhorns, including Texas-themed desktop wallpaper.

    $$ Yawn.

This from a paper that lives down the street from SMU, 30 miles from a TCU team that finished 11-1 and in a city that is home to neither Texas nor any member of the Big 12 Conference. Makes you wonder who runs the rag these days, Belo or Bevo?

"There's a lot of UT alumni here, sure, but there are a lot from OU, too, and they didn't get the same treatment when they won the title,"

The Hammer is smarter than this. He knows full well what influences are at work, but he's not going to say anything, because he works in that arena. tongue.gif

I hope Richie will write the same column when UNT wins a BCS bowl. I also hope that the DMN, DRC, and FWST have front page coverage. I will expect it.

    What a pissy little b*tch. rolleyes.gif

  7. Dickey has only one game to win next year to keep his job, and he better not screw it up, SMU.

Then the players on the field playing the game better work hard this off-season, get stronger, work on their mental discipline, and be prepared to execute their game plan to the best of their ability.
