  1. There is also a new federal lawsuit that was filed in early April 2023 in the Northern District of California's Oakland Divison against the NCAA and the P5 conferences seeking back pay for thousands of current and former student-athletes who believe they are entitled to damages from schools who offered payment since the 2021 ruling of the Supreme Court. The class action suit states that these payments have been allowed since the summer of 2021, and the athletes who participated on teams on or after April 1, 2019, at schools that now provide such benefits believe they qualify for back pay since there is a 4-year statute of limitations.

    Stories are available on usatoday.com (April 4, 2023) and theathletic.com (April 4, 2023).

  2. This caught my eye in the strategic plan:

    • Provide Alston awards to all Mean Green student-athletes starting in fall of 2023.

Hadn't heard of Alston awards so did a quick search.

Based on the 2021 Supreme Court ruling in Alston v. NCAA, Alston Awards allow schools to provide up to $5,980 a year for academic-related benefits, if so inclined, with the individual schools setting up the requirments that must be met by an individual athlete to qualify for payment.  I determined that "Alston Awards" is the nickname for the educational benefit payment previously litegated.

My question is about the strategic plan statement:

Have all Mean Green student-athletes not already been getting this stipend since the term "provide to all Mean Green student-athletes" is used?  If not, which team's student-athletes, if any, have been getting this money?  Is this expense a budgeted item in the regular athletic budget?

Just asking for someone with knowledge on this matter to help sort this out for me since I do not know the current situation for UNT student-athletes and what this goal changes.

Honestly I have had way more people at work and in personal life bring up the NIT championship than did the round 1 win over Purdue. People noticed - especially when they saw the 31-7 record attached to the win.

I had my Mean Green shirt on today walking into a medical building for an appointment and, upon entering the lobby, an older couple was coming out and the gentleman said "Mean Green, ya'll sure had a good basketball team this year."  Second time this week someone has commented on Mean Green basketball...people have noticed!

Tylor is going to be able to change his family’s life in one year of college basketball. He poured his heart and soul into the university for 2 years. 2023 season is a business transaction.

Totally agree...at some point you have to look at the future and make tough decisions accordingly.  I don't think anyone could say he didn't "pour his heart and soul into UNT" but now he has to evaluate his situation with a look to the future which offers opportunities that won't be available to him later

We've got to stop viewing losing coaches a bad thing. There's two paths here, you are either losing a coach because they were excellent, or you are firing a coach because they failed. I'd pick the first one every time. Until we get in the realm of $3m a year we will always be a target for schools with bigger budgets. Mac gave us the best BB in our history, and set the foundation for continued success. It's up to UNT to keep that going and not waste it away.

And therein lies the problem we have had in UNT athletics the 50+ years I have been a fan...now is the time for this to change!  The Mean Green nation needs/has to band together and really support all our athletic teams, starting with basketball, to become a major player nationally. GMG!

I agree... honestly, I think he sees that the team won't be as good next year and his time to move up is right now. I have faith in Rubin, Abou, and Aaron, but we would need to see a flashback to HS Rubin for us to have a remote chance of being as good next season. Defense wins so I don't think we'll be bad but I think Mac knows it's time.

Also think in the back of his mind is Seth's experience of not taking a higher profile job when offerred and the resulting history of that decision...strike while the iron it hot if you are a competitve person who wants to challenge yourself at another level.  Wish he would stay but also wish him well if he moves on to Tech...he deserves our thanks and best wishes because he gave us his all out effort while here.

This is what I hate about things like the RPI. We won two games against a bad team and dropped six places - TAMU-C moved up seven.

LaTech, who we just beat 2 out of 3 games, moves up two places and goes ahead of us after beating a team ranked lower than TAMU-C

    We have to sweep UTSA!

Note we have the fewest home games played at 6, along with Middle Tennessee

  8. UNT Tennis was finally ranked for the first time (#69 in the nation) going into a 3-match stretch Friday.  Unfortunately they only had 5 healthy players so they had to forfeit two singles matches and a doubles match against Tulane Friday and UTSA Saturday, losing 4-0 in each match.  Terrible time to be shorthanded.  WKU is up on Sunday.  I don't know if the injuries are long-term or not, but the timing could not have been worse.  Hopefully they are back at full-strength soon!  GMG

I know TP won the award, but Jelly is the best player in the conference.  He was the difference yesterday.

This was not Mac’s best team and they still won 26 games.  Really gritty and tough group of kids.  They never quit, but we have holes all over the place offensively.  Will be interesting to see who is back next year and what pieces are brought in.  How Abou continues to develop will be crucial.  He struggles against the better posts in this league, but he has the tools to be an all conference level player.  I’d love to see a talented kid on the level of a Jelly Walker come in.  We will need it at the AAC level.  Someone who can single handedly pull us out of a scoring drought or take over a game.

I think there is a difference between the Most Valuable Player and the Best Player.  Jelly Walker may be the best, most talented player, but Tylor was the Most Valuable Player to his team, thus earning the MVP Award.

A bunch of us on Gomeangreen.com pitched in to rent a searchlight for a game many years ago. Multiple Skytrackers, one placed on all four sides of the Pit would really light up the facility and make EVERYONE aware that that a major event was taking place.

Any idea of the cost of doing this?

The corner columns should have green up lights, the roof should have something on he facing and run spots.  I attended the FAU game and am coming back to town for the WKU affair on 3/4.  The outside of the SP was dark prior to the FAU game and nothing exuded excitement.  We really need to work on our game day presentation.

Seems like I remember that in the past searchlights were used around the Super Pit on game nights...very effective because they could be seen at a distance
