  1. On the line: North Texas has finally gotten to the point as an athletic program where it is following the plan of buying in an opponent for what amounts to a sure win on an annual basis. UNT brought in Texas Southern in 2012 and paid $410,000 to buy in Idaho last year. That move paid off when UNT won its season opener over the Vandals and built some confidence that paid off in a nine-win season. UNT will bring in Nicholls State this week in another well-timed game. 2. UNT made a key move today — both in terms of its immediate future and its long-term plans. Dajon Williams is in at quarterback for the Mean Green. The story of how UNT got here in terms of the last couple of months is one we went into a little on the blog today. UNT head coach Dan McCarney pulled the curtain back a bit and talked about Williams’ issues off the field over the last few months — not coming into camp ready to go, missing both major fall scrimmages and the fact he is now a father. We hinted at some of those issues on the blog for the last several months, saying that Williams wasn’t ready and wasn’t in the race. I’m not going to second guess McCarney or offensive coordinator Mike Canales on this one. UNT followed what seems like a reasonable course of action. 3. Dan McCarney has issued a series of warnings to his team this week about the dangers of overlooking an opponent. North Texas’ coach says any team is a threat when not given the proper respect, including Nicholls State. The Mean Green (1-2, 0-1 Conference USA) will take on the Colonels on Saturday at Apogee Stadium in a game that is expected to be nothing more than a tuneup for a game against Indiana and an opportunity for new starting quarterback Dajon Williams to get his feet under him. McCarney says playing Nicholls could be a lot more dangerous than it might appear if UNT eases into a game against a team from the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly Division I-AA. “They have struggled in their first three games, but they have athletes just as anyone does in college football,” McCarney said. “You look at FBS [Football Bowl Subdivision] versus FCS games — Bethune-Cookman beat Florida International out of our conference. North Dakota State beat Iowa State, Indiana State beat Ball State and Abilene Christian beat Troy. 4. “The team watched two hours of film on North Texas, looking for ways to attack the deeper parts of the field because of North Texas’ cover four defense. The team is also looking to get the running game started, after a less than 100 yard effort last Saturday,” Henderson said. Axman said while he was unable to see film of any of the Colonels’ games this season, what happened is in the past, and the team needs to rally together and look ahead because there are still nine games left to play this season. The team is looking forward to North Texas and their first win of the season. - See more at: http://thenichollsworth.com/7000661/sports/7000661/#sthash.GNCNziWD.dpuf
  5. I had a friend whose daughter is attending UNT as a freshman inquire about tickets for the game being that it is Family Weekend. According to her, these are the only sections they have available: Sections 101, 102 201, 202 108, 109, 110 124, 125 General Adm: 111-114 I realize this won't be a sell out, and of course we laid an egg last week. And Nicholls is not a big name opponent. But don't discount how many kids from around DFW and the State are starting to choose UNT as their destination school. Many of them come from high schools where football was a big part of the social scene. Being that we are finally having an evening game, and given good weather I think we could have a very nice turnout for this game. I still have the bad taste of La. Tech in my mouth but with the unveiling of Dajon at QB, Family Weekend and good tailgating times - I am starting to get the Mean Green juices flowing again. GMG
