It is with great trepidation that I respond to the bolded section of the sentence on top as well as the one just above. Mainly because these discussions rarely end in any sort of agreements. But since I've gone this far......here goes.

To me, this is a discussion about talent, not systems. From my observation of Fine, he is in charge of a great system, installed by great systems coaches.  He is great in the system because he is a great timing passer/thrower. And as I said of him when he was a freshman in fall practice, he oozes confidence from every pore. But he is not the best pure QB that ever played here. He threw the ball a lot in HS, and put up gaudy numbers, but when his HS came up against Lone Grove all that impressive passing resulted in a 0-64 loss. Someone obviously figured out how to disrupt his rhythm...….much like La Tech, USB, Old Dominion and Utah St.

MF has benefited from a great system put in place by great coaches.  The only former NT QB that had anything even remotely close to the coaching MF has had was Mitch Maher who was (position) coached by Todd Dodge. But he played in a crappy facility, with crappy funding and crappy support from the administration. Not only did Mitch Maher have a better overall passing arm, as well as running ability (and like Fine he threw just was well on the run as in the pocket), but there are several other former NT QB's who did as well.

Scott Davis, Scott Hall, Gioanni Vizza, Joe Stevenson, Jason Mills, Jordan Case, and even Daniel Maeger (who still holds the single game passing record of 601 yards)  had great throwing ability and great mobility. If any or all of these guys had been brought in at the same time as MF, and coached in the same system, it is my humble opinion that Mason Fine would have been sitting on the bench all this time.

Scott Hall put up 5900 yards in a primarily running system. In two of his four years, he spent a good amount of time handing the ball off to two national champion rushers. Scott Davis operated in a run-first system (the veer and the wishbone.....flying wishbone).

Mason Fine is a very precise timing passer, but if you mess with his timing/rhythm and/or his overachieving WR's are not going up and getting the ball, then the team is in danger of ending up like his Locust Grove team (0-64) in his senior year, or like our two times against FAU in 2017, with a Troy cherry on top in the NO bowl.

Just to put an asterisk by the Lone Grove game...Locust Grove had one bullet...Mason. The game was played in a mudhole better suited to a monster truck rally. The OHSAA said later that the game should have been postponed. Locust Grove’s coach said he never should have let his team take the field.  Grove was a better team whose strong point was their ground game. My only point is that this game is not a barometer for Mason Fine’s abilities.

  2. Mason Fine’s impact on this program (and his legacy) is not about wins, hardware and championships. It’s about leadership, integrity, work ethic, team building...the list is endless. UNTalumni will for years be able to point to him and his accomplishments yet to come with pride in this university.  Mason’s future is much, much more important than football. I told you this before he got here.

You have the right to your opinion but I respectfully disagree.  They actually have had a pretty representative group of speakers and have raised a lot of money for UNT.   Allen Dershowitz voted for Hillary Clinton and is a lifelong democrat.  Richard Fischer who was head of the Federal Reserve Bank ran as a democrat against Kay Bailey Hutchison and lost.   General Keith Alexander was appointed by Obama to lead USCybercom.  General Michael Hayden served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency and National Security Agency  in both the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations.   General Hayden has been a fierce Trump critic.  Admiral James Stadrivis was appointed by Obama to lead NATO forces.  I think the point of the series is to look at the accomplishments of the speakers not the politics.  It shows the world that UNT is no longer just a "Teachers College" and is a top notch academic institution.

If you were lucky enough to attend a lecture by ADM Stavridis you probably learned something. Served with him twice and he is the smartest human I have ever known. And the most apolitical. He never cared about political affiliations because he thought politicians were idiots. His only fault was he is too short to drive the lane.

  4. I spent the last 6 years of my Navy career in Norfolk and hated just about every nanosecond of it. That said, I am more of a PacFleet kind of guy. It’s been almost 20 years, so I’m useless for current recommendations, but if you go to the neighborhood called Ghent (I think Colley Ave is the main drag) you should find tons of good food and drink. And it’s close to ODU. Just don’t let the locals irritate you with their superior attitude.

  5. Alabama has a Buc-ees!

If you’re traveling east on I-10, exit 49 (Beach Express) is the home of AL’s first store. I got hooked on Buc-ees when our daughter lived in College Station and we would drive to see her. The new store is scheduled to open in January, I think. They have already made an impact on Baldwin County by paying much higher hourly wages than we are accustomed to in these parts.

  6. North Texas at Arkansas

When: Saturday, 4 p.m. ET | Where: Fayetteville, Arkansas | Line: Arkansas -7

Why it's listed: Arkansas is in a precarious situation. It surrendered, in classic BERT fashion, an 18-point second half lead in a Week 2 loss to Colorado State. North Texas, like the Rams, can put up points in bunches. Arkansas has a size advantage, but this is a hangover loss waiting to happen.

North Texas' key to the game: Protect quarterback Mason Fine. He is valuable but small -- two things that don't often go well together in football. He's the nation's leading passer at 431 yards per game and eclipsed 4,000 yards through the air a season ago. Yet, he is normal sized ("listed" at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds) which means he is terribly undersized, relatively speaking. Arkansas, meanwhile, is not undersized. Hits like these may turn him into ash.

Arkansas' key to the game: It must continue to work the ground game. Yes, the Razorbacks have changed offensive philosophies, but running the ball was the best thing they did against the Rams. Lean on it again and it should wear down North Texas' defense. In the final 20 minutes or so, it'll be the difference.

Pick: North Texas is good enough that Arkansas can't afford to let the past live in the present. The Colorado State loss was rough, but some environmental issues (road game in altitude) can play a factor. Now the Razorbacks are back home. If they're slow out of the gate, they'll be in trouble. ATS: North Texas, SU: North Texas”

  7. Please pardon me for using my son’s log on, but I got tossed a couple of years ago during the furor that arose when Littrell burned Mason’s redshirt and started him ahead of that Bama guy.

I said then that UNT will be better not just because Mason is a great QB, but because of the human being he is. I’m thrilled for him and your university that things are working out. People will still be talking about Mason Fine and UNT 25 years from now. All because of the person he is.

The fact we've been playing football for over a century and don't know the basic fandom rules drives me crazy. This is the first time I sat on the alumni side and as I have always done; I stood the entire game and was without voice at the end. I was asked and talked about to sit down so they could see. ( I'm 6'0 not Shaq). This was my one and only complaint of the night, this will get better with prolonged winning but still an issue.

Ah, the age-old “stand or sit” dilemma. I’m all for fans displaying their enthusiasm, as long as they are not negatively impacting another fan’s game experience. So, stand if you wish, but at least look around you to see if there are fans behind you who can’t stand for long periods or at all.

What are the odds that a guy living in Mississippi has a father living in Locust Grove, Oklahoma and they’re interested in North Texas Football ?

Welcome aboard theMadon Fine train tour through Conference USA.

    GO MEAN GREEN

Actually, he was on this board 2 years ago, but got 86’ed because he thought some posters were criticizing Fine for reasons that had nothing to do with football and he said so. He’s over it. He’ll be at the Arkansas game and I may be with him.

Thanks for the tips on Stadium Video!
