  1. I can appreciate the work RV started in bringing up UNT's facilities to above-par, but ultimately results on the court and on the field caught up with him, especially after several botched hires.

Moving forward, can anyone start a poll on potential replacements? It seems a fait accompli that RV's replacement is probably lined up already, but it won't hurt to have a bunch of speculation until an announcement is made...

  2. I was at the Rice game last week. Rice could have had half-a-dozen picks and you could tell that there was no zip or drive on McNulty's balls. He threw one good ball all game, the 93-yard TD to Carlos Harris and that's because Rice were anticipating the run and Carlos got behind the defense. McNulty is just not good.

  3. Firstly, I think you mean "flack" - One "catches flack" and then asks to be "cut some slack", but I digress.

Protecting AM is nonsense. And I don't think it's so much about knowing the playbook as it is the other things that DW seemingly has failed to do. You can't let a kid dictate what he will or will not do no matter if he is the second coming of Tom Brady. You do that and you quickly risk anarchy within your team. As an example there was a game last season in which DW refused to wear a headset during the second half and send in signals. Refused. I can't imagine any coach rewarding that kind of behavior no matter how good a player is.

When coaches talk about maturity etc it's things such as the above that I think they are talking about. And until DW buys in completely Id wager his role is limited.

When did this happen? I thought more would have been made of it, especially when it makes Mac looks better for sticking with McNulty.

  4. Definitely think Canales is on the hot seat and if he's the QB guy then something needs to be looked at. The QB issue at UNT has been bad since... well, forever. And a good chunk of that has happened on Canales' watch. Apart from Thompson (who I think did what he did in spite of Canales, not because) who else has really panned out? No one. Hence why Canales had to go this off season and why I won't be surprised to see a similar announcement to that of Skladany prior to the UTEP game at the latest.

If this season goes south quickly - and so far everything points in that direction - I can see Mac wanting out and negotiating his own buy out so he can go somewhere else and/or retire.

  5. I wonder if he'll be able to transfer that sense of urgency to the players. It's all well and good claiming you're coaching for your job but as we've seen with Benford, this AD are recalcitrant at best to buy out remaining years on coaches contracts.

I can't see RV having the cajones to fire a guy just two years removed from a five-year extension with an option for six.

  6. The only probable wins are Portland State and UTSA if we get the bounces - see last year when we were a fumble recovery/bad punt return away from salting the game away.

UTEP and Rice posted pretty easy wins against us last year so unless our front seven significantly improves I can't see whatever offense we put out keeping up.

WKU is a longshot because it's a program that appears to be run right.

This will be the year Mac posts his first losing season at home unless we see something special developing over the spring/fall camps. Especially with Canales back as OC I have no faith in our offense though Mac seems confident in the defensive adds. If they're as advertised I think our defense will come back to it's lights-out 2013 level.

  7. Is it reasonable to expect RV and the AD to explain what's going on with recruiting? Obviously replacing the Tulsa series is hogwash; it's been multiple years since that series was cancelled to find a replacement.

But I find it extremely hard to believe that there aren't solid teams around the country who would pass up the opportunity to come to the DFW area and play a team (that, lets be honest) is a feasible win. If there was more transparency could that help the fans understand (if not accept) why 5-game seasons are necessary?

Because right now it appears that RV is only putting a token effort at best into scheduling and standing up for UNT's best interests. It's not in our best interests to have an opening week bye, along with home games on three significant dates for the metroplex.

If President Smatresk's big deal is marketing and pushing UNT's brand out there, this football schedule is appalling. I wonder if he'll have the latitude to shake it up in Athletics. He's already shaking up academics with his program review and now being able to appoint his own Provost with Dr. Burggren returning to the faculty ranks (though for how long is another question - he'll be Provost or President elsewhere within 12-18 months I'd wage).

  8. Yeah, no doubt. There is no excuse for the Union being behind schedule, no excuse. It's a renovation, not a new building. 2 years is more than enough time. Fall 15' it must be up and ready to go. The Union will attract a lot of students and interest at UNT. Construction really kills campus vibes and current and prospective students feed off of said vibe. Due to the construction going on that vibe is lacking a little bit. Long drawn out construction projects are so annoying. Since I'm on the subject, University Dr needs to hurry it up. Also, I read somewhere that this I35 expansion isn't suppose to be done until the summer of 2017!! I hope that was read wrong on my part. GMG

Where did you hear that the Student Union is behind schedule?

And actually, yes, it is a new building. They're using the skeleton of the old building so it wasn't a complete demolition job like the old Kendall Hall but they're also adding on around the whole building. It's not like the renovation of Sage Hall or Marquis Hall where they gutted the interior and reorganized it.

UNT can't control the I35 expansion project, and that's a long project because of the length of I35 that's being expanded (from 635 to 380) so to expecting it to happen overnight is silly.

~2 years for construction projects - major ones like the BLB or the Union or Apogee seems reasonable to me, especially when site work is necessary such as demolition or foundations need to be set.

  9. No offense, and I'd rather us win in those sports than lose, but nobody cares about either of those sports, except for the friends and family of the players. If you have to prop up an ADs job performance (not saying you are, BTW) by trumpeting soccer, softball, tennis, golf, track, etc...well, that tells you all you need to know.

At other schools in the country, if you cannot win at one of the big 4 sports, football, mens hoops, womens hoops, or baseball, you aren't gonna stick around as the AD for very long. But here, you keep your job for 15 years, receiving numerous extensions. Look, its not just athletics, either. Lee Jackson got extended AFTER the accounting fiasco that still totally hamstrings the entire university from knowing what they can budget for as we move forward. The BOR here literally looks at the cheapest path forward on everything--tuition, budgets, capital expenditures, etc..."value" is all they care about.

For the record, I think RV has taken UNT as far as he can with the restrictions (self-imposed or otherwise) he's had. His record of coaching hires in revenue sports is disappointing and his hodge-podge of a marketing campaign to get more fans involved is weak. His strengths are related to the explosion of facilities for athletics, and while some can argue they've fallen into his lap he's still the athletic guy who has to sign off on them. For comparison, it's like blaming the sitting president for a bad economy or praising him for a good economy. Sure, he can help or hinder but ultimately it's out of his hands.

I highlighted soccer and softball in response to a previous poster asking how UNT did in non-revenue sports.

  10. I predicted 4-8 last year and can't see us doing any better with the shape the team was in at the end of last season. As many have pointed out, QB play will be key as well as seeing how this signing class fits in and meshes with the coaches.

Right now I think 4-8 with the schedule we have is the best that can be hoped for.

We could be as bad as 2-10 with the only wins being SMU and Portland State. The Apogee factor could get us a couple more wins, and this is when the road-heavy schedule with no bye week(s) really hurts.

  11. Wishful thinking, what CUSA Championships have we won and advanced to national championships?

Women's soccer were C-USA champs last year and were finalists the year before. Got bounced in the national tournament after a tough game when our all-American, all-Conference goalkeeper was knocked out of the game with a pretty serious cheek/face injury.

Softball played solidly though I can't remember off-hand how their season ended but I know they set records for wins.

  12. OOC Opponents:

    2015: @Iowa; @Tennessee; @Smu; vs Portland State

    2016: vs SMU; @Florida; @Army

2017: vs Army; @Iowa (How on earth do we schedule an 0-2 with IOWA!?); @SMU

2018: @Army; vs SMU; vs Incarnate Word - at least this season we should be guaranteed six home games with the opportunity for seven.

    2019: vs Army; @SMU

    2020: @Army; vs SMU
    2021: vs Army; @SMU

At least RV figured out to have reverse fixtures with Army/SMU each year rather than the current C-USA schedule of all three Texas teams home one year then all away the following year.

But still. That schedule is hardly going to draw fans into Apogee, and getting FCS teams plus one of Army/SMU is not the vision fans were sold when Apogee was being built.

  13. 2015 was always going to be a clusterf***.

But now that we have Tennessee out of the way, what does 2016, 2017, and 2018 look like? I have a feeling we'll see 5 home games again and again and again and that's only because 80% are conference games that are handed to the AD. I have yet to see anything from RV to suggest that he'll bring exciting, watchable teams to Apogee. He couldn't sell a bucket of water to a guy with a house on fire. -_-

This season has 3-9 written all over it, and that's if we're lucky. SMU under Chad Morris will be tougher than people think, especially at home, WKU and Marshall are flat-loaded, MTSU are dangerous, LaTech will have an SEC-quality QB replacing a guy who torched us up and down the field, Iowa and Tennessee paid for us to come to their place for a reason, and UTSA seems to have our number. And Rice will dominate us like they did last season. Portland State should be a gimme. UTEP is a toss-up as they're coming to Apogee and SoMiss are a team we should beat.

This is going to be an ugly season unless the JUCO class are above-expectation hits.

  14. Slowly but surely it seems like Mac & his staff are putting together a solid signing class. JUCO-heavy, but that's what they need to do to re-energize the fanbase and start being competitive in Conference USA. I still think that we're currently no better than a 6-6 squad, but with the QB, DB, DE, and WR additions/redshirts there's more hope then existed at the end of the UTSA game.

  15. "If LA Tech play better in the first half we lose this" - maybe they didn't play well because UNT made it difficult? I'm all for saying that perhaps LA Tech came out assuming it was a gimme win (who wouldn't with the run we've been on?) but lets give credit where it's due - the players showed up and we got an unexpected result. Pretty much like the Creighton game.

I bet Benford is going nuts trying to figure it out but if the players are inconsistent that's on preparation - and that's on the coach.
