  1. Any word on if DT is still holding onto the starting role???????

Did not know DT was on the bubble?

Kicking, Olen is not going anywhere. Mac said he was the man in the Thurs interview but that he would make changes if things did not get set right?

    Time well tell the tale!

    Go Mean Green!

  2. But how has he done in college and how has any training and preparation he has done in the past year impacted his abilities? Was he coming off of missing two field goals in the same game? Where was his head compared to Olen? Stats are a nice indicator, but sometimes you have to look at the situation and make the best determination in the moment. This one game was not the big picture, it was the small picture. The coaches looked at the situation and made a decision. Just because it didn't work out doesn't mean that it was wrong. I probably would have done the same thing given how things had gone to that point.

I agree, the coaches went with their gut and made a change, but it was the wrong change. I stated in a different post that the MG have 3 kickers (2 being freshman) and Olen. Olen is the veteran and should be leading but when you make a change you go with the best next in line, Paul was not the best next in line.

Never the less the MG are going to get things going right against FAU and Thompson is going to lead us to a 14 point victory!

  3. One thing I had noticed sitting at the games was it seemed that Olen had gained a lot of weight. While good for some, I'm just not sure how good that is for a kicker. It seems to me that a drastic change could throw all sorts of things like balance off for a kicker. Looking at his listing on Rivals recruiting page shows him at 5'10" 185 and now is listed on the UNT roster at 5'10" 228. I am certainly no kicking expert, but I have to think that 40 extra pounds could affect distance and accuracy both.

i dont know, the saints kicker Janakowski (sp) is about 265lb, so one could argue the point, but then again kickers and punters do need to look good on the sideline drinking their gatorade, right? ;P

  4. We've had red zone issues for several years now

all the better reason to strengthen our kicking game. i know that we have beaten this issue up for the past few weeks but from i have found after researching our 3 kickers is that we have the tools we just have to use them.

Olen is a dang good kick off man but lacks in FG dept over the past 2 years, Frosh year was good?

Paul (Freshman) did not fair well last week and was not a proven FG kicker in HS 4a

Tamez (Freshman) lead the state last year in 5a FG and punting

looks to me like we should use a 1-2 punch and try it out, just might work

  5. The one thing I just can't get over is this. If Thompson had been accurate OR Olen had been accurate, we win on Saturday. It wasn't as If our offense didn't move the ball. This is both reassuring and soooo frustrating.

On one hand it makes me think all the doom and gloom people aren't realizing just how far we've come when both the passing game and the kicking game can be broken and we're still in a game until the end. On the other hand it worries me deeply that both can disappear simultaneously.

Hopefully the next two weeks will tell us who we really are.

I agree, but look at it this way: If we can stay in a game where our QB is off, our running game sputtering, and our kicking game just, just...well you get the scenario.

Then with just a little work and maybe a few changes we will be high powered!

The defense showed up and did their job now the offense and special teams need to do the same, results will be a WIN!

  6. Have faith we will turn this season around and get back to back wins this year.

Yes we are 1-3 but look at it in a positive way, we lost to (2) top 15 ranked teams respectably.

The loss to Troy was upsetting because it could have very well been a win, so lets build off it and get stronger.

  7. People can make snarky comments about recruiting rankings all they want, but in the last ten years we have picked up exactly twenty one three stars and four four star ranked recruits.

All of those four stars were from JUCOS. So in the last DECADE we haven't been able to pick up a four star kid from high school.

Our recruiting classes have averaged out to about 102nd in the nation during that period, why in the world are we expecting mid 60s (or higher) finishes on the field?

Yes, I know ranking aren't perfect, not every player lives up/down to his ranking, but I think in the long run they are a good measure of success. I would KILL to have a 4* like Mike Pruitt terrorizing opposing centers and guards.

We all go to the games and love it, but this is college football, the real winning and losing happens during recruiting season. With the new stadium, student fee, conference change, etc, I think Coach Mac has a chance to turn this all around. But we have got to start winning in living rooms, once we do that we will win on the field.

Gotta think positive and gotta have some faith, we will get on track and go at least 500.

Long shot...but I will go out on a limb!

  8. Since Paul had not ever kicked in a college game, how do the stats suggest that Olen had a better chance?

Olen is 8 out of 9 between 20-29 yards (per an earlier post). That equates to a 89% chance of making it!

I am looking up stats on Paul and he made 7 FG's in 2010 and 0 through his first 4 games in 2011 per max preps.

Does not take rocket science to see the big picture. (IMO)

  9. Does anyone else find it funny that Olen, who was 2nd team all Sun Belt under Dodge, has been shell-shocked by this coaching staff and their inability to coach FG blocking. If I had every other kick blocked, I would be off as well.

When kicking there are other factors that set up the miss, such as the snap, the hold, the wind, and the rush.

I posted on another thread that maybe Mac should use a 2 kicker system to take some of the pressure of the kicker.

Hey but I am just another Monday morning QB,

"if's and but's produced nuts, we would all be squirrels"! lol

    GMG!

  10. I did a little hunting on percentage of field goals made. The data is from 2005 and based on the NFL so I would expect the college numbers to be a little worse.

Olen mised 2 47 yarders. That has a 72% chance which is good but not automatic. Your going to miss 28 times out of 100. At 48 yards, the percentage drops to 62%. Olen just had 2 of his 28 in a row which is unusual, but within the normal stats for an NFL kicker.

My personal thought was Olen should have been given the chance at the 27 yarder, certainly over a true Freshman who had never kicked in a game before.

I still think losing was a group effort and certainly not Olen's sole fault.

I'm pasting the link below if I can from my iPad.

You know I agree Olen should have taken the 3rd FG attempt, going by the stats he had a better chance of making it than Paul.

If you are going to let a new kicker kick it is better to start off with that kicker or at least use the 2 kicker system that Alabama uses.

They kick off with Foster and use Shelley to kick FG's up to 45 yrds, beyond 45 they use Foster again?

Hey could not hurt look at what it did for them last year, I think Shelly had like 5 FGS in the Champ game?

  11. The freshman kicker is now 0-1. Chip shot at that.

I checked on this and found out that there are 2 walk on Freshman kickers on the roster.

Zach Paul is out of Wakeland High School made (140 out of 140 PATS) in his HS career and lettered 2 years

Travis Tamez is out of Mesquite John Horn made 16 of 18 FG his senior year and was an All State kicker his junior and senior year.

Sounds to me like they let the wrong kicker kick. SMH
