I think it will be Arikawe and Simmons who could be battling for the 5 spot.
    I view Temara a 3 Point Rebounder
I view Arikawe and Simmons as Paint Protectors. Although Simmons could develop into a Scoring Paint Protector

  2. Mean_Green09's post in UNT 2015 Spring game in review was marked as the answer
Sure there were a few missed assignments, but you can't judge on highlights alone. I mean was there really 8 mins of highlights from that game anyways?

When you combine both the 1st & 2nd defensive units you should be able to piece together a decent unit. Not a 2013 unit, but possibly better than last year. I don't envision a star studded D, but rather 11 guys with equal talent who combined together could make for a good D. It's gonna take all the pieces functioning together though. Because there isn't a Zach Orr, Akunne, or Trice to save someone's missed assignment.
  3. Mean_Green09's post in Is it possible the defense had one bad game? was marked as the answer
It's an average defense with average talent. To be good they have to play with great discipline and fundamentals. There are times when they do those things and we feel really good as fans. Then there are the games like LT and IU where we don't and we look really bad.

We need guys like Lee Jones and Buyers to always play above their skill set bc we are forced to throw extra guys against the run. When those guys have bad games we give up large chunks of yards.

Are we as bad as we played against IU? No.

Our defense walks a fine line every week between playing good and not good.

Typically teams that are balanced give us the most problems.
  4. Mean_Green09's post in Why Dajon Williams and the zone read can bring new life to the Mean Gr was marked as the answer
The first TD run by Dajon was not a typical "zone read" play. It is called an inverted veer play. This one specifically you call an inverted veer power. The RB and QB are attacking the same side of the field.

In traditional zone read plays your QB is reading the backside DE. If he crashes the QB pulls, if he stays home he gives to the RB. Most coaches prefer the QB hand off to the RB on traditional zone reads.

The inverted veer play is much like the Power O concepts that we use and thats why you see this play more than a traditional zone read. Y'Barbo is the pulling guard on that first TD.

Dajon is reading the DE #99 Cole Frazier. Frazier is the best DL for the Colonels. Its typical that you force the opposing teams best player to be the one being read or zoned.

What needs to happen to stop this play is for the DE to crash the QB and the LB's to scrape over the top to the RB and not over pursue.
  5. Mean_Green09's post in Jalen Adams used the doubts of others to motivate him was marked as the answer
He is no longer on the team. I think he transferred before the season started. Kind of a shame. Was hoping to see big things from him.

He plays at Oklahoma Baptist University now.

  7. Mean_Green09's post in So any thoughts on Ball State? was marked as the answer
Overall talent wise they are about as good as Ohio. They are a top tier MAC team. Offensively they are going to put the ball in their QB's hands and say go win us the game. Their WR's are outstanding, their RB's are good but not great. O Line is their offensive weakness. Have to put pressure on their QB if we want to win.
On Defense they can be scored on. I would say its an average defense that does what it needs to in order to win games. They have a good pass rushing defensive line, and a good secondary. Their Linebackers are a weakness. Going to be another good test of where UNT is as a program.
  8. Mean_Green09's post in McCarney Names Thompson UNT Starting QB was marked as the answer
First off I’m proud of Derek for not pouting and crying about having to fight for his job. Competition never hurt a team or made it worse. In this case I never felt like it divided the team either. Part that was due to the fact that we just don’t know what the other guys can do in a game situation. In the end I felt like it was the best choice to name Thompson the starter. He knows as well as all UNT fans that a big improvement is needed in order for UNT to go to a bowl game. Last year I felt like Thompson wasn’t always put in the best situations and he was lacking some talent around him. That being said I also felt he didn’t quite perform when UNT needed him too. He was too inconsistent at times, missing open wide receivers and also his inaccuracy was a big concern. Let’s hope he has corrected the mistakes and taken his game to another level. I know the most level headed and sane UNT fans are not expecting him to be Superman. All we want is an efficient QB who moves the chains and puts points on the board. If Thompson goes out there and Throws for 2700 yards 17 TD’s, 3 INT’s and rushes for another 3 TD’s and UNT has a winning record, well I think we will all be happy UNT fans. I wish him all the best of luck. Derek you earned the nod now go make Mean Green Nation proud!
