  1. Brett Medeiros / Senior Staff Writer - UNT has gone through monumental athletic changes in the last 10 to 15 years. Before the changes, there were part-time coaches and inadequate facilities, and UNT simply was not able to attract the best athletes to the school. I spoke with Athletic Director Rick Villarreal earlier in the week, and one of the things he mentioned was that about 30 years ago UNT had ignored athletics and only had sports at the school because that was what you were supposed to do. What hit me the hardest was Villareal said UNT actually contemplated [...] View the full article
  2. Tyler Owens / Staff Writer - Despite three players scoring in double digits, the Mean Green (13-12, 6-6) fell short against Florida Atlantic on Saturday, dropping its third straight game. Junior forward Sara Stanley led the way for the team, notching a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. It wasn't enough, though, as FAU (14-9, 9-3) defeated UNT 71-63. "We didn't pick each other up, and that's what we needed to do to win," senior guard Tamara Torru said. "I don't think we played very much like a team." Coming into Saturday's game, the Mean Green had lost its [...] View the full article
  3. Ann Smajstrla / Staff Writer - Occupy Denton held a vigil Monday evening in remembrance of Darwin Cox, the 23-year-old man who was found dead at the occupy site Saturday. About 100 people filled the Physics Building Room 102 to attend the event, said Occupy Denton member and physics doctoral student Ricardo Correa. "it's a great pleasure to see this room nearly full with people sharing their pain, Correa said, Sharing their hopes, sharing what experiences [Cox] has left us with and the things that we will miss most about a very idealistic and generous young man. 4. OPINION This week we close out what has been an exciting year for the North Texas Mean Green football program. With the opening of beautiful Apogee Stadium and the tremendous support of our students and season-ticket holders it has been a historic year. With a 3-2 record at home, we have already won as many home games as they did in the previous three years combined. With your help this Saturday we can improve to 4-2, which would be the best home record by a Mean Green team since 2004. We are also just 12,143 people away from breaking the [...] View the full article
  5. OPINION Sean Gorman / Sports Editor - As the semester comes to a close and many students plan to head home for the winter break, theres no better time to reflect on what has been an eventful fall season for UNT athletics. While there was plenty to enjoy, nothing stands out more than the revival of Mean Green football, a crucial late-season win for the soccer team and a surprising home sweep for the volleyball team. Elation at Apogee The culture change head coach Dan McCarney wanted to create at UNT came to fruition during the football team fourth game [...] View the full article This post has been promoted to an article
  6. OPINION Paul Bottoni / Senior Staff Writer - Around this time last year, UNT hired head coach Dan McCarney with the hopes of bringing UNT football from the depths of mediocrity back to a respectable Division I-A program. The hire was the right choice. In his first season at the helm, McCarney and his staff have not only improved the team's on-field performance as the team went 8-40 in the past four seasons but also re-established good habits off the field, from academic success to staying in shape. 8. Ian Jacoby / Views Editor - Situated in a hot bed of talent and in a conference that produced two of the past five World Series MVPs, UNT could be taking a swing at adding an NCAA baseball team. Members of the Mean Green athletic department have discussed bringing a Division I baseball program to UNT in recent months, but acknowledge that there are several steps needed to make it a reality. "This s a huge emphasis for the athletic department,"said senior associate athletic director Eric Capper. "We've discussed it at great length and it seems to make sense in [...] View the full article

  11. BRIEF Staff Reports Earning its first conference victory of the season, the UNT football team used four turnovers to defeat Florida Atlantic 31-17 Saturday at Apogee Stadium. Despite being out-gained in rushing and passing yards, the Mean Green (2-4) won its second straight home game for the first since since 2004, scoring two touchdowns off Owls (0-5) quarterback Graham Wilbert interceptions. “This was a big win for us. It was a very good team win,” head coach Dan McCarney said. “We should great effort on both sides of the football.” Senior running back Lance Dunbar led the UNT offense with [...] View the full article
  12. Paul Bottoni / Senior Staff Writer - UNT football player Brelan Chancellor is, quite literally, turning heads. The speedy wide receiver and kick returner ranks No. 15 in all of college football for all-purpose yardage this season. Described by his coaches and teammates as a man of few words, Chancellor has impressed with his work ethic and talent. “He’s a great athlete and player,” redshirt sophomore quarterback Derek Thompson said. “He is quiet; he doesn’t do a whole lot of talking, but [rather] with his performance on the field. He comes to work every day, and it shows.” Inspiration from [...] View the full article
