  1. I still say look at what Kragthorpe did at Tulsa. Tulsa had 2 two win seasons prior to Kragthorpe as HC. He had a winning season his first year as head coach and then won a conference championship. He has the tools to win at a mid major. Kragthorpe will have a sunbelt championship within 3 years. PUT IT IN THE BANK...

  2. Huge win for Tulsa with the victory at Notre Dame. Biggest in their schools history. I really love when the underdog wins. Then they lost me as Notre Dame starts to play their Alma Mater there goes the Tulsa band with their fight song trying to play over the Notre Dame band. Just classless all around. Maybe I'm old school but I would hope the Green Brigade would never do that to another school.

You win a game then you must ask the other team how to celebrate without hurting their feelings? Give me a break. If you don't want the other team celebrating on your field or in your stands then do not have a stupid coaching mistake at the end of the game.

Bottom line: If you win then you celebrate and play your fight song as loud as you freaking can....

  3. Just found this article from around the same time period.

Jim Leavitt reflects on life after USF

OK, now if anyone EVER questioned if we'd have a real chance at hiring Leavitt, the fact that he's contemplated taking a HS job should tell you all you need to know. I REALLY, REALLY hope Leavitt is, at the very least, interviewed for this job.

My understanding is that he will be announced as a HC but not at UNT. I dont think we have enough money to get into a bidding war.

  4. You realize we're going to have a hard time even getting a highly rated coordinator or FCS HC don't you? I'd be thrilled to get either. Part of the reason Dodge got another year is because there simply aren't any slam dunk coaches we are in a position to get.

Actually, I believe that RV wants excitement to bring in the new stadium. That is either with a Sunbelt Championship or a "Name" coach. The Championship will most likely not happen. The "Named" coach will.

  5. It will be Jeff Bower if RV can get him to move to Dallas. I think his wife is from Dallas. But they have a few extremely good personal reasons to stay in H'burg area. If not Bower, then I look for Kragthorpe to be the new HC. Both are solid choices but I do not look for them to be popular choices with the fans of GoMeanGreen.com.

Good luck this year I will make it to a couple of games.

  6. Doubt if TxDot would allow for individual painting of one of it's bridges, but it would be nice. Also, that bridge will be torn down as I-35E is widened, several years away. A new bridge at NT Blvd will include walkways on both sides, plus a walk bridge is planned north of NT Blvd to the new stadium from Fouts parking areas. See page 62 on the Masterplan...

    http://www.unt.edu/untmasterplan/documents/Final_Master_Plan.pdf

Nice! And I must say that the UNT Master Plan is fantastic.

  7. SO Miss has a painted bridge just north of MM Roberts stadium. I do not have the skills to post a link but you can see it fairly good from google maps street view. I think it is a great idea to paint the bridge just south of fouts.

  8. Baseball was not the main selecting criteria, just a good extra. I've heard the main reasons UTEP was selected over NT and La Tech (since UTEP didn't have baseball either) was they are a Southwest Airlines city (easy travel there, same for us), their football facility (Sun Bowl), and attendance (35K football, 10K basketball). We were told to get our football facility and other general facilities updated, increase donors and attendance, and try again next time.

NT80 this is the most accurate post on the subject.

  9. According to US News and World Report Troy is a 3 tier University with 1 being the best. UNT is a 4 Tier as is Southern Miss. For what it is worth the prep route and the JUCO routes are different in nature. By closing this "loop hole" it forces schools like Ole Miss to go the Prep Route like UNC. You try to figure out who pays for the Prep Route because I cannot and the NCAA does not seem to care. But rest assured this loop hole helps schools like UNT, Troy and Southern Miss. I guarantee you that if Dodge had the opportunity to over sign while "placing" 3 stars at a JUCO's while grades got in order he would. The fact is that Dodge does not have this problem and therefore it is not an issue.

  10. Where did you hear CUSA wanted to expand to 16? If that happened, I think it would be great for us, but I can't see how or why they would want to try and juggle 16 teams. I can't even think of 4 teams in their footprint that are worth bothering with, except us of course.

The presidents have discussed it multiple times. About the footprint.... We stretch from El Paso to the Atlantic Ocean. I like a lot of things about CUSA but a well defined foot print is not one of them.

Troy, South Alabama (because of basketball and baseball tradition and the hope that football will be grow quickly), and a couple of MAC teams.

  11. If CUSA expands to 16, who are they going to take?

Good question. My guess is that CUSA plays it cards in hopes of a 8 team playoff system. With 8 conferences having a tie in. Meaning that the Mountain West and the WAC somehow combine their top teams to form a very good conference. Then CUSA grabs a couple programs the help us to be the other conference no matter what the other conferences do. With an 8 conference tie in playoff system teams can schedule more difficult out of conference games that do not hurt their chances of playing for a national championship.

A more pointed answer is that Troy always comes up a the next addition to CUSA.

  12. What would losing one football school mean to the Big East? If Rutgers, for example, left, the remaining seven football schools would have a decision to make. Do you go out and add one football school (such as Central Florida, East Carolina or Memphis) to get back to eight and proceed as presently constituted? Or do you use that opportunity to add two or three to the mix and get to nine or 10 members for all sports? That would allow the football schools to say goodbye to the eight basketball schools (such as Providence College) and divide the East and Midwest even further.

Marinatto would not comment on any such talk, and for good reason. The Big East is currently secured with a spot in the lucrative Bowl Championship Series in football, is as strong as any conference in basketball, and owns lucrative, long-term TV deals. So life is good, right? Not until another 12-18 months, when the Big Ten could re-start the conference musical chairs.

IF the big 10 expands look for Pitt to jump. The Big East has a problem in that some of those football schools would rather stay with the basketball schools. The basketball schools do not want to expand. CUSA is talking about expanding to 16 teams. I think that we will benefit GREATLY from the next shake up.

  13. I'm going to be Mr. Negative here....

I think the rivals Star Rankings are a crock of sh*t. Just look at past stars given to people that are superstars now. I think its a better indication to look at other schools that offered. Not that were interested, that offered. I think that gives a good preview of the future ability of these guys. But then again, someone can be overrated just as easy as underrated.

Hope they all work out. And I hope we land that QB.

Ummm. The number of schools that offered does weigh in on the Star system. It is not a perfect system but I would rather have as many stars a possible on my recruiting roster.

  14. I perused acouple years starting from the year after we were in their conference(and owned a winning record over them in the Big West mind you). They did go on the road a few times, but I only counted 1 game against Top 25 OOC opponents in the 3 years between the Big West and playing Georgia.

The other Power League schools they faced were unranked, and a few were in really bad spells(they got Oregon State a few times when the Beavers were very down for example, and still lost once)

UCLA, Washington ST, Arkansas, Louisville are all cupcakes. Look you cannot help if one of those teams have a down year. You schedule them, you play them and you continue to do so until you are beating them. Boise was in div 1 AA in 1994 and look at where they are today with fewer resources then UNT.

  15. Or focus on getting winnable games and building your program that way? Boise State didn't schedule anyone worth anything for years(Georgia in like...2005 was the first time right?) - but got noticed because they won their league for like 5-6 seasons straight and kicked the hell out of 1-AA schools.

Do you want to check that yourself or would you like me to correct you?

  16. It is not as if Mr. Dodge did not have a fair chance or honest opportunity. He did!

That is an opinion that you and I do not share. The FACT is that he was not prepared for the task at hand and was not given the resources to get the job done expeditiously. Having said that I am impressed with where he has this team and feel like it is too early to "pull the trigger".

  17. 1. If TD remains - Will his recruiting be damaged by lack of success on the field ?

    2. If TD goes - Will this recruit class be basically a wash ?

    3. Will the new stadium help to overcome our lack of success on the field and the will he or won't he coaching situation ?

    1. No!

    2. It depends. RV obviously wanted to change the type of football being played at UNT. The rebuilding pains could have been limited had he hired a HC who was "pro type" offense oriented VS running the spread. So if there is a change you would think that RV would find a HC who wanted to keep the spread. So the rebuild to the new Coach's system should translate.

    3. Not at first! The stadium is for the fans. The more fans the more money the more money the more..... the better the recruits. Players want to play and win. They will go to a school with an inferior stadium to play and win. Coaches sell a bill of goods to recruits and the stadium is pretty far down the list. High on the list is playing big time programs. I wish the UNT fans would embrace the scheduling of the big AQ BCS teams rather then calling them body bag games.

  18. Hopefully someone can help clarify this -

6 wins makes a school eligible for a Bowl - The Sun Belt will have at least 4 teams with 6 wins

2 teams will have at 8 wins - with a couple of upsets 4 teams could have 7 wins or more

Question - Do teams with 7 or more wins get preference over 6 win teams? Could a 7 or 8 win Sun Belt teams stay home while a 6 win team from a BCS conference gets selected?

    Thanks

The odds are in your favor that if there is a 7 win team there will be room for them in a bowl game. It looks like the Sunbelt will have 2. A 6-6 team will likely stay at home no matter the conference.
