  1. Just thinking about how our attendance ranks with the other members of the SunBelt. Per the NCAA Accumulated Attendance Report dated 09/30/07:

    UL-L, #89, 23368

    ASU, #92, 22620

    UL-M, #94, 22022

    Troy, #99, 21188

North Texas, #101, 20479 (Note we could not rank higher than #81 (30212) as our stadium would be at beyond full capacity)

    MuTS, #107, 18846

    FIU, #115, 12201

    FAU, #117, 11079

    and others of interest

    WKU, 17532

    SMU, #98, 21317

Do you guys have a place for "overflow" crowds (if needed)? Cajun Field has a 31,000 capacity; but with extra space on the endzone hills we had 33,828 for McNeese this year, and have had more on a couple occasions in the past. Just curious. Hopefully we'll have a decent crowd for you guys this saturday; but I doubt it will be much over 15K if that.

  2. I'm considering making the drive out there. I love the city of Lafayette, and I had a great time at the New Orleans bowl when it was transplanted there. What's the gameday atmosphere like for a Cajuns game?

That's a very good question! I was at the home game against McNeese and it was awesome. The place was packed with tailgating going on everywhere and an overflow crowd at the game. Unfortunetly we lost some "casual fans" that night, and the team's performance since then isn't attracting more fans right now. Can't blame it on a first year coach either!

I think the hardcore fans/tailgaters will be there as usual; and there are some really good ones too! Most are very open to visiting fans, so you can still "pass a good time" at the game. You might want to visit the Cajun Delphi site (even though you can only get into the open access folder) or visit Raginpagin.com. I'm certain you will get an invite or 2 to some of the tailgating. You will have a good time in Lafayette and the game "should" be very competitive for both teams.

  3. ull, loser of all including to a 1AA, opens as a 9 point favorite in Vegas. :shocking:

Is this going to be the pillow fight of the week on ESPN Bottom 10 list? Wouldn't shock me. Both teams desperately need a win so it will come down to who wants it more. Cajuns haven't done any better than NT wrt defense. If we can use a lot of clock and score TDs instead of settling for FGs; then I think my Cajuns win. Should be a shootout. I'll be driving over from San Antonio for this game. Anyone here going?

    P.S. Take the points!

  4. Surely you don't excpect LaLa and LaMo to be favored against us.... or FIU.

If you guys played the Cajuns this week, I'd have you as favorites. Our play against McNeese was terrible. Just hoping that was a VERY BAD night of football. It was a great football atmosphere in general (tailgating, attendance, etc); but we continually shot ourselves in the foot during that game.

  5. You'd think a start-up would use Alamo Stadium. It's dumpish but has around 23,000 seats.

I thought the same. Think its more like 20K. Local paper indicated the "vote result" was to be released on Friday (9/14). I know part of the resolution was to spruce up ALL of the athletic facilities to make them competitive with similar universities. I'm hoping the fee doesn't kick in until next fall (my daughter graduates next May).

  6. In fact, I'm gonna call my beautiful wife at work right now and tell her if she'd just get a boob job and lose about 5 pounds my self-esteem would go through the roof.

Disclaimer: Lera, if you are reading this board I would NEVER suggest such things. I love you.

Just do it for giggles then tell us about it. Disclaimer: if you are still alive!

  7. Shof, correct me if I am wrong, but aren't you a ULL fan? If so, the folks from Lafayette know a thing or two about grilling seafood and swamp critters. Better try the above!

Yes, "old" USL grad. There is some outstanding tailgating at Cajun Field. One of the more well-known groups is the "Krewe de Chew". I recall one of their guys mentioning that the NT cheerleaders spent some time with them last time in Lafayette. Wish I could make more games there; but its a hard drive from San Antonio-Lafayette for a short weekend. But the NT game is one on my list to make.

    Good luck this year.

  8. The best thing Ive come up with yet is Shrimp wrappd in Beacon, then grilled and basted with a combination of BBQ sauce and Beer

Curious - does it glow or just flash? I do a similar grill but add some jalapeno with the shrimp, then wrapped with bacon. Baste it with italian dressing (which the shrimp have been marinated in).

  9. What a refreshing concept: Talk turned into action ......................from the Rajun Cajuns.

Great link find, Emmitt........................ and yes, we now have a Sun Belt school (not its largest, either) who has taken the lead in this part of the facilities arms race.

One very reliable senior poster on this board told me several years ago that there were anywhere from (I believe he said) 14 to 17 of our wealthiest who would each dedicate $1,000,000 toward a new stadium; well, maybe this whole idea of an indoor facility (for basketball, too) may now have become our biggest immediate need that would help us recruit the kind of kids that would help us fill our (eventual) new football stadium out at Eagle Point Campus as well as the Super Pit. No matter how you slice it, our new football stadium is still going to need a T. Boone Pickens type of donor to get that project jump-started (and probably) built.

Nice home for Rajun Cajun basketball team, too. Very interesting....Would love to see the blue prints on ULL's facility and how much all that cost.

For more info on the Cajuns facility visit www.raginpagin.com There is a long thread on the facility with lots of pictures. It will have an airconditioned basketball annex; but the football portion will not be climate controlled. More than anything its to get us out of the rain since we get quite a bit down there. I'm pretty sure the cost was under $5M (3.5 comes to mind); so if we can do it, I'm sure you guys can too.

  10. Not sure how the committee came to the conclusion that the weight training gave the appearance of it being "mandatory". Heck, we can't even afford to keep the players in school over the summer, much less make them attend weight training! And, that compliance officer has been gone for a couple years now. stAte: you're welcome!

The only part of the probation that really hurts is the basketball scholorship loss. Football already completed the reduction in spring training hours (from what I've heard) and the money loss from tournaments was minimal.

  11. Tonight had to be one of the best performances of this team for this entire year.

Several guys in double figures, huge spread in rebounds.

Our guys out hustled the other team.

    FG% was good.

Just an all around great performance, I think it was the best this year.

Congrats on the win. Your guys really brought it last night. I like your chances in the tournament bracket. UL-M hasn't been good on the road, and you guys have already won in Lafayette. Good Luck.

  12. Both Tina and JJ need to be shown the door.

There is NO, I repeat NO reason for the Men to beat a BAD ULL team only because the last-second shot went up a split second late.

Yes, we are weak this year; but I really thought we were going to steal one last night! Enjoyed listening to the game. Enjoy the win. Lord knows we (the cajuns) can only get better!

  13. Don't know if SBC bylaws would prohibit it, but La-Monroe managed to go SBC for football and Southland for their other sports until recently.

But that was also done because the SBC "needed" them to form the 1-A football conference. If you are a full member, you must participate in all SBC sports in which you field a team. Suspect this horse has done been beaten to death. biggrin.gif

  14. I still don't think that YOU'RE getting it. I'm not necessarily pushing for a WAC membership, I just think it should be something for NT (not ASU) to consider if the opportunity presents itself for a FOOTBALL ONLY membership in the near future. I would prefer a comprehensive USA membership or a two division WAC, but that may not be feasible anytime soon.

OK, so if NT were in the WAC for "Football Only", where would the other sports reside? It wouldn't be in the SBC! Conference by-laws wouldn't allow for that (I believe).

  15. The name escapes me but the famous artist that does all the "blue dog" paintings has a place there. It is great. anyone in town should be able ot get you there.

I think it is the Blue Dog Cafe. Very easy to find. From Cajun Field go south on S. College all the way to Pinhook. Turn left on Pinhook and go a few blocks. Place will be on your right on the corner of Pinhook and Audobon Dr (I think).

Only problem with most of these places will be the timing. Game ends around 7, which is pretty much when the rest of the town is headed out for dinner. biggrin.gif

For those of you going, have a safe trip.

  16. I hope to see UTSA field a football team soon. The university has grown past its "commuter" image and with no other D-1 team in SA, it should succeed. However, it would take years before they were even SBC worthy much less CUSA worthy. I for 1 would like to see them grow to a SBC level and bring some good football into San Antonio. One thing they have going for them over Texas State is that they are a little further from the large shadow cast by the Longhorns. Sure, there are still plenty of Longhorn and Aggie faithful here; but there's definitely enough room for football to succeed in San Antonio and grow into a respectable program.

  17. FIU has played some close games but FAU and ULL have been hopeless so far.

As much as I hate to say it; we (the Cajuns) deserve to be here right now. But I suspect we will be off the list after the next 2 games. Nobody is happy with the first 2 games; but we did expect to compete better.

  18. I draw the line at UTSA... PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF...!!!!

Don't worry, by the time UTSA is ready for the SunBelt you guys will already be in a BCS conference biggrin.gif Regardless, they (UTSA) aren't even talking about the SunBelt. They have visions of a "CUSA type of affiliation to match their metropolitan area". cool.gif Realistic, probably not; but those in positions of influence don't seem to mind talking about it. At least they're not bashful.

  19. Completely agree.

    Rick

There are 2 schools currently in the SLC that I wouldn't mind seeing in the SunBelt some day; Texas State and UT-San Antonio. Texas State could probably make the move any time. UTSA is still a ways from making the move. Interestingly, today's SA Express-News ran an article on the state of athletics at UTSA, and as you might expect, football was at the forefront of that discussion. I don't see them having a viable football program (D-1A) for another 5-10 years; but if they do make the jump, I think the Sunbelt could be a good fit. Now, my opinion is biased on 2 fronts - first, a daughter currently attending UTSA, and second, another opportunity for me to see more of my Cajuns without having to travel 450 miles. biggrin.gif Still, either of these schools could be solid additions to the SBC if the chance arrived.

  20. I live in Austin and am subject to Cat Osterman fever !!!! But lets face it , Softball has outlived its field.  This is a sport where one can dominate if she is head and shoulders above the rest of the players. This is evident with players like Cat O or Jenny Finch. They consistently throw no-hitters, 1 hitters, 2 hitters and their ERA's are .0007 or something crazy like that. When did Softball decide they would put the pitchers mound 40 feet from Home plate? This is too close! Can anyone name any other players off the USA team or UT team besides the two mentioned. As for UNT we all know Fowler but that is it. When I go to a boys little league game and see that 8yr olds pitch from 40 feet that puts it in perspective. When will softball grow the field? I know it will be never but this is why I don't really care about the sport. I want to see the SS make plays. I want the game to be about the players not just how dominating the pitcher is on a given night!

    suggestion:

Make it 46 feet from pitchers mound to home and grow the basepaths 4 more feet. Push the fence back 25 feet and lets play ball....

    EE's Softball Blog..................

I think it is at 43 feet now (moved from 40 a few years ago for college). Still, you are right about a single player being able to dominate if she's that good, and Cat is.
