  1. I wish him the best of luck, but I'm afraid his actions on his way out, coupled with his archaic offense will keep him from HC positions.

    Bingo.

I think he shot himself in the foot for future jobs with the way he acted....at least future HC jobs.

Right now, if he gets an offer to be even just a position coach, he should jump on it and be thankful.

  2. I bet we don't know a third of what has been going on behind the scenes during the years Mattress Man and Dickey had their vice like grip on our schools athletic program.

The whole story needs to be told.

I hope people who know the truth will have the courage to speak out.

I know this much...it's no coincidence that a certain Board of Regent's term is ending at the end of the Spring.

Want to talk about a vice grip? Try being the AD or President of an institution when one of your underlings (i.e. head football coach) has a Board member in their back pocket.

I find it not the least bit coincidental that the firing of Dickey came when this Board member will be stepping down in a few months.

  3. O.k., folks, let's just review this for what it is. There are two sides to the story. That means someone said something not true, or said it wrong, etc.

Now, we narrow it down to the three entities involved:

    1. RV

    2. Southern Miss

    3. Newspaper reporter

My vote is, and always will be, #3. I have learned from being misquoted several times in my own past that only about 50% of an article is typically correct. Reporters misquote, omit, and take out of contest most everything.

So to answer the question, "Someone isn't telling the truth...", most likely it is the reporter who simply got it wrong.

    My 2 cents.

  4. FIU football coach Strock to resignBY PETE PELEGRIN

    ppelegrin@miamiherald.com

Florida International University football coach Don Strock, whose team is 0-9 and mired in the longest losing streak in the team's young history, will resign after the season.

Strock, who has a 15-38 record since the Golden Panthers began playing in 2002, will coach the team's final three games, starting with Saturday's home game against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Well, at least he owns their longest winning steak as well. So at least he has that going for him....which is nice.

  5. Am I really that bad in calling out people for reading comprehension?  laugh.gif

My point is simply that in the Big10 - every game is entertaining because of the level of talent involved.  I've enjoyed our close wins in the conference because I am a diehard and I understand the Sun Belt and our short history with it.  But people outside UNT or even semi-interested alums are not.  So... What do we need?  We unfortunately need a gimmick.  The gimmick that has been working for most teams these days is the spread types of offenses.

Bottom line is that most of the on the fence crowd would be enticed back into the stadium with the spread.  And that is the most important factor - attendance.  All things being equal (wins) please give me the spread team vs. the grind it out teams.

    Thanks and goodnight.

    Well said.

  6. My point has been missed entirely here.

UNT is not the Big 10. The Big 10 has a football tradition unmatched by nearly anyone. You cannot expect to run Big 10 style offenses here at UNT and expect to be successful. They have NFL talent, UNT does not.

Dickey went how many years undefeated in the Sun Belt? Three? Four? What did it produce? Other than when Baylor or TCU came to Fouts, when did we ever go over 20,000? Maybe once or twice? Wins doesn't necessarily generate the excitement needed to put butts in seats in the metroplex. You have to give them more for their dollar.

My point is...boring wins do not entertain the masses. Yes they entertain the diehard fans...but UNT needs more support than that.

Some of you say you would be happy with 22,000. Well, that won't pay the bills folks. You want a new stadium. You want a new conference. Well, average attendance less than 30,000 won't give you what you want, and a boring yet semi-successful offense will be slow to increase attendance in the timeframe you want it increased.

  7. No - people will come to see wins - with a caveat.  If you are winning squeakers against the Baylors and SMUs of teh world, people probably wouldn't care what is on the field.  But guess what - we are in the sun belt and we play 3/4 of our games against sun belt teams.  Therefore you need to beat them with style points.  Otherwise it is just another no-name team you just squeaked by.  But crush them by 34 points with a spread offense - that's something different.

Just ask my Mom.  rolleyes.gif  She's the typical slightly interested "on the fence fan" who asks me who we are playing this week when I ask her to come to the game.  If I tell her - oh just some sun belt team - but we will probably win - the answer is let me see what else we have planned.  If I say - it doesn't matter.  We're going to hang 50 on em and will throw for 400 yards - she's in no matter who it is.  And I'd be willing to guess most "on the fence-ers" are in the same boat.

EXACTLY my point. Even if you don't win, but you lose a shootout 42-41 or some such, it will still be entertaining to folks. And that's what it's all about...entertainment.

I promise you that even if you went 11-0 with run right, run left, run right, win with scores 17-14, you are not generating an entertaining product that will bring the masses to the games. Boring wins are not entertaining enough to bring the attendance where we need it to get to a better conference and justify building a new stadium.

  8. We would kill for a 30K crowd! That would fill the stadium within a few of capacity.

If we can get our average crowd to around 22K, we could completely drop the body bag games.

But I think you're missing my point. Wins alone doesn't do it. 30k for a 10 win, Top 15 team is not good. It's very, very bad.

TCU won, but was boring to watch, and that's why their attendance was really bad considering their success. If UNT wants to consistently have an average attendance above 20,000, boring wins won't cut it. You need a game that is entertaining to the average Joe Q. Public to get them to come.

  9. No. we average as many or more per game than many C-USA, MAC, and WAC teams -not to mention other Sun Belt teams.

Win games, people will come. Get into C-USA and play teams that people have heard of and even more will come.

    Winning is the #1 thing.

Didn't work for TCU. They won games and played good opponents (Utah, BYU), and still struggled to get to 30,000.

    30,000 fans for a 10-1 team? That's ridiculous.

So wins isn't it....it's excitement. You have a boring offense, and people don't want to come watch, even if you do win 17-10.

But if you have an offense that lights up the scoreboard, people are entertained, and they will come to watch it.

  10. At the same time, Patterson touted his own offensive coordinator, TCU's Mike Schultz, as a "good candidate" for UNT. Schultz interviewed for the Rice job last year.

Oh hell no. Why would we replace one boring offense with another? That would be a monumental mistake by RV to go in that direction.

What this all boils down to is not wins and losses...but rather attendance. TCU has how many 10-win seasons in the past 6 years? And what does their attendance look like as a result? Not that much better than UNT, relatively speaking, to be completely honest.

UNT is in a very precarious position right now. It NEEDS to drastically up it's attendance or it's bye bye Division I. You need an exciting offense more than you need wins to get people to come to your games. ATTENDANCE should be RV's ONLY focus in determining the next head coach.

A pass-happy spread offense is the only way to go. It worked for Tech, Louisville, Boise St., Hawaii, Kentucky...the W/L records didn't really improve THAT much for these schools, but the attendance numbers skyrocketed. That in turn brings more money to the program, which means it can afford more capital improvements, which attracts recruits, which improves the program, which increases attendance, etc. etc. etc.

This hire by RV is his watershed moment as AD. This is how his tenure as AD will be judged. He has the chance to bring in someone that will take UNT to a new level in attendance and excitement about the program. Hopefully he realizes this and realizes that bringing in an offensive coordinator from a boring-ass offense like TCU's would be a screw-up of monumental proportions.

  11. Sonny Dykes for all the reasons mentioned in previous posts.

UNT needs that spread passing attack to give it a chance to recruit talented skill players AND get the locals interested and wanting to come watch the games.

Run right, run left, play action pass, punt ain't gonna do it. The spread-run that is so popular ain't gonna do it. UNT needs to air it out...often.

Dykes is the way to go.

  12. 1. 2-man rotations at QB do not work. I shudder to think what kind of trainwreck a 3-man rotation will be.

    2. Scale back the Dickey offense? SCALE BACK? I mean, come on, it's already 90% run, 10% PA pass. By the way, I wonder if Dickey noticed how they scored their only TD of the game? It was a pass....to a wide open receiver running across the endzone to the corner...against the defending national champions in their house....a team who many consider has the #1 defense in the land.

  13. Strange, thier Dline is considered the strength of the team.

The didn't blitz much at all, any pressure they created, they made with those four down linemen.

No, they didn't blitz much at all, and they only got to the QB really once...but that was with a blitz.

But I was watching the SMU D-line from two perspectives. One as a Tech fan, I watched how they got pressure on the QB, which they didn't. But as a UNT fan, I watched Tech's running game against them thinking about how UNT will do, because Dickey ball is run Jamario 90% of the time, and PA pass the other 10%.

Tech's O-line isn't really designed for old-fashioned rushing up the gut blocking...yet the Tech RB, Shannon Woods, was flying past the SMU d-line without them even knowing he was there.

As a rushing defense, I was not impressed with their D-line at all (or Tech's O-line is much better than I'm giving them credit for).

  14. I was at the Tech-SMU game this weekend...some observations:

    1. Justin Willis is a competitor. I was impressed with his running ability. He had one play that was very reminiscent of the wild run Seneca Wallace (Iowa State) had against Tech a few years ago.

    2. SMU's running game is sound. I know the stats don't seem to agree with me, but they did have some impressive runs.

    3. SMU's defensive players are good, fundamental tacklers. I was VERY impressed with their tackling. There was not a lot of YAC for Tech unless there was no SMU defender anywhere close at all. When they made contact, they were sound and followed through.

    4. I do think UNT's offensive line should be able to handle the rush by SMU's defensive line. I didn't think they (SMU's d-line) were very good.

    5. SMU's kick and punt coverage teams were either very good, or Tech's protection was very bad, or it was a combination of both.

    6. I would like to report on SMU's passing game, but they didn't attempt enough passes to be able to report on anything.

    7. I feel a bit dirty that I'll be watching SMU live back-to-back Saturdays.

  15. None, and will never have one.

I also think a tattoo on a girl is about the ugliest thing there is. I will see a beautiful girl, and then she'll have some ugly-ass tattoo on her ankle, arm, or back that absolutely ruins her appearance.

  16. Letter from a Michigan fan site to the Sun Belt...pretty humorous:

Michigan Zone Letter to Sun Belt Officiating Coordinator

    Mr. Lucas,

If the officiating in the Alamo Bowl last night is the standard for the Sun Belt, you and the entire conference should be embarrassed. Those referees were so bad, even the ESPN announcers working the game were pointing out how atrocious they were.

In the future, here are some helpful tips for your crews. First, the easy ones:

    * When a runner drops the ball before his knee hits the ground, the rest of the conferences in America call that a fumble.

    * When the ball goes through a receiver's hands and hits the turf where he traps it, that is NOT a touchdown, even if the receiver is in the endzone.

    * When a DB wraps his arm around one of the receiver's arms preventing him from catching the ball, that is called pass interference. The DB does NOT need to grab both of his arms, draw blood or rip off the WR's helmet first for this to be called, contrary to how they may call it in the Middle Tennessee State/Louisiana-Monroe game.

    Now for the tougher ones:

    * With the game winding down to a thrilling finish, one team desperately trying to get the ball back for one final drive, once the ball is set, the play clock normally starts within, oh, a day or two of being spotted. Most refs in other leagues don't check their dinner reservations or email first.

    * Finally, when one side has their entire team, coaching staff, trainers and the kid who carries the coach's headset on the field DURING A LIVE PLAY, you might want to consider calling a "Too Many Men/Women/Children on the Field Penalty." Just a thought.

Well, hope this helps so in the future the Sun Belt refs don't conduct themselves on a national stage in a way that would be an embarrassment even at the Pop Warner level.

    Sincerely,

    The M Zone Staff

  17. 1. Kids don't go to UT, Nebraska, Colorado, Miami, Notre Dame, etc. thinking they will be 2nd or 3rd or 4th string. They go with a big enough ego thinking they will beat out the guys in front of them to win the starting job.

    2. Even if they go knowing they won't get immediate playing time, many of them would rather be a 2nd or 3rd or 4th stringer on a potential national championship team playing in front of 80k people than be a first stringer on a team that is fighting tooth and nail just for a bowl bid. TCU just won their conference, and their reward? They're going to the Houston Bowl. That is their reward for winning their conference. For their Big XII counterpart, the Houston Bowl will be viewed as a failure to their season.

Now you tell me...you're a big time recruit coming out of high school and you get a full-ride to a UT, Miami, Tennessee, etc. Are you going to give up the chance to be a member of a National Championship team so you can be a starter on a team that considers a lower-tier bowl the epitome of the season? Hell, even schools in the Big XII (Tech, Okie St., Baylor, Iowa St., etc.) have a hard enough time attracting these kids...and they are in a BCS conference.

This is why not every D-1 team in Texas is loaded with top Texas talent.
