The win in our FCS game has me has saved us in a couple of seasons. The big surprise in terms of needing the FCS win this season was UNC. The Heels were in the Top 10 in the preseason poll. They needed the win over Wofford to get to 6-6.

Not making excuses, but these are our OOC losses since our last win over Army in Oxford back in 2011. We took Army to 2 OT in 2018 at West Point, blew an 11 point lead with the ball and 2:38 left on the clock at home vs. Cincy in 2017 and lost 31-25 at bowl bound Minnesota this year. Not exactly a murders’ row slate but damn challenging.

You could add the Rams’ Sean McVey’s name to the list of current NFL Coaches. Other noteworthy college football coaches were Sid Gilman, Randy Walker Bill Mallory and Terry Hoeppner. 
 

We have one fairly noteworthy QB currently playing in the NFL named Ben Roethlisberger. In hoops we claim NBA legend Wayne Embry, three time NBA champion Ron Harper and Wally Szczerbiak. We got a bunch of guys who have played in or are still playing in the NHL. 

KC Royals former left hander Charlie Liebrandt and former Red Sox second baseman Billy Doran also played at Miami.

Yep. But we sure as Hell picked the wrong year to play them in football.  Our 5-6 team was drubbed by them in November 1987 in the old Orange Bowl. They just happened to finish 12-0 that season, winning the National Championship after beating Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl game. We open with them at the Hard Rock on Labor Day weekend in 2023. 
 

im sure we’ve probably played them in other sports - like basketball, baseball or softball. I don’t really remember if we did or didn’t. 
 

Even though we’re struggling in the NCHC this season. I’m also pretty sure we could whip their butts if they wanted come up to the Goggin and play us in ice hockey.

Miami is the only university in the US to claim a President (Benjamin Harrison), a Super Bowl winning QB (Ben Roethlisberger), a Miss America (Susan Perkins 1976), and an NBA first round draft choice/NBA Champion (Ron Harper). Known for decades in football as the Cradle of Coaches, we currently have two alumni serving as head coaches in the NFL - John Harbaugh for the Ravens and Sean McVey for the Rams.

Founded in 1809, Miami is the second oldest university in Ohio behind Ohio University in Athens (1804), making her the 10th oldest public university in America. Our Oxford campus was once called “the prettiest campus there ever was” by none other than legendary poet Robert Frost.  

With an enrollment of about 19,000 on its flagship campus in Oxford, Miami University is a public research university with a primary emphasis on undergraduate education. It is consistently ranked among the Top 50 national public universities in the US News and World Report annual college rankings - currently tied for #46.  It was named one of the original “Public Ivies” in a book by author Richard Moll. 

Miami has two additional campuses in Southwestern Ohio located in Middletown and Hamilton and the Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg. The university’s total enrollment is about 24,000 - a little less than half of UNT’s. 

Athletically, Miami Football teams were considered “giant killers” throughout much of the past 50 years - with wins over LSU, Kentucky, Indiana, Purdue, North Carolina, Maryland and others. Miami was the only team to beat Northwestern’s 1995 Rose Bowl team before its loss to USC on New Year’s Day. In 1997, Miami ended Virginia Tech’s 14 game winning streak in Blacksburg. In the mid-70s Miami teams went 33-1-1 over three seasons, beating Florida, Georgia and South Carolina in consecutive Tangerine Bowls. Miami’s 2003 team, led by Big Ben, defeated Louisville by 20 points in the GMAC Bowl and finished the season ranked #10, it’s only loss coming in its opener at #6 Iowa. It marked the second time Miami finished the season ranked at #10 (1974). 

Miami’s 2010 team became the only team in NCAA football history to go from double digit losses to double digit wins kn one year when it beat Middle Tennessee in the Go Daddy Bowl. 

And the RedHawks became the only team kn NCAA history to win its last six games after losing its first six in 2016) - losing its final game 17-16 on a blocked last minute FG to Mississippi State in the St Petersburg Bowl. 
 

limited to playing only 3 games in 2020 due to COVID, Miami is working to restore itself to its former place as football’s giant killer. Approximately 75% of this years roster is classified as either true freshmen or redshirt freshmen. There are only 10 seniors on the 2021 RedHawks team. Miami’s 2022 recruiting class is currently listed as the #1 class in the MAC.

The primary driver of the resurrected Red Box Bowl (Frisco Football Classic) was to insure Hawaii could host a bowl at 6-7. They were facing sending A team from the mainland to face Memphis in Honolulu because 6-7 Hawaii could only be placed after ever 6-6 team was placed. . They were also faced with saying a highly embarrassing  “you’re not worthy” to exactly one program - probably Miami, UNT or Liberty, an Independent 7-5 team without a conference bowl commitment. Liberty quickly sealed some kind of deal with the Lending Tree Bowl to avoid being the team left out.  The NCAA was also faced with a technicality involving both Miami and  WVU. LIU, both of those teams’  FCS wins - did not provide the minimum number of football scholarships to be considered an valid automatic FCS victory. According to the rules, the NCAA would have had to drop both teams to the bottom of 6-6 list, meaning WVU, as a Power 5 team, would be the # 82 placement and Miami would be on the outside looking in. Re-certifiying what had been the canceled Red Box Bowl and playing it as the Frisco Football Classic proved to be a win-win for everyone. Let’s play football!

Thanks! I’ll let our folks know. I’m told we have about 2,000 Miami University alumni in the Metroplex. Hopefully a sizable contingent will turn out to bowl events and the game.

Legendary Arena Football QB Dan Radabaugh - from Coppell, Texas - played at Miami U. According to several sources of information online, he’s currently the OC for the Frisco Fighters. Who knew?

It appears the executive director for the Frisco Bowl - Sean Johnson - is also coordinating the Frisco Football Classic. I would guess our bowl events will probably be carbon complies of those of the Frisco Bowl.

Yes. The guy on our board who answered that question has a daughter who is a member of the Shakerettes, the band’s dance team. Our kids are taking finals this week but she surfaced to tell him they are going to the bowl. Details will inevitably follow. It is good news that the band got the notice they are going while it’s  members are still on campus this week. It might allow us to increase band member participation before everyone scatters next week. .

I looked at a YouTube pregame performance. You do have a very large, high-quality band. I’m not sure what percentage of our 270 piece band will be available to travel to Texas during the holiday break and on relatively short notice but we’ll no doubt bring a contingent worthy of a bowl game appearance. Update from Miami that I shared on the Green Brigade thread. One of the dads on our board just got word from his daughter the the Miami University Love and Honor Band will be traveling to Frisco. That probably means they’ll be a traditional “battle of the bands” the night before. Great news!

Hello, Mean Green football fans. I’m an old alum of Miami University who’s a member of the RedHawks’ fan board. Although I’m not able to attend the Frisco Football Classic due to an influx of Christmas company on Dec 20, I am tracking what’s going on and sharing information on bowl d ents, etc. with the folks on our board. Looking forward to the first ever meeting between the two teams. We’ve only played in Texas twice since our football program began in 1888 - once in a Sun Bowl win over Texas Tech in 1948 and most recently in a loss at Houston in 1984. I am a retired Miami Alumni Chapter Founder/Long-term President and I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have about our campus, history and traditions. We sure have the most appropriate uniform combinations for a game being played during Christmas week. I’m hoping both times decide to wear their traditional colors instead of alternate uniforms.
