NT isn't running an athletics programs as a charity.  The only reason they are doing it is because they are convinced it helps elevate their brand and value.  Like it or not a successful athletic programs raises the University's value with perspective students, business partners, staff, and faculty.

True!  The year after the few years we have had a good football season the number of freshman applications go through the roof and more importantly the quality of the applications goes up exponentially (test scores, gpa's, etc.).  Not financially quantifiable, but never would happen otherwise.  Also, donations go up not just to athletics but academics as well.

The problem of student reporters is that they have no real viewpoint of the world from actually experience; unfortunately as we all get older they keep staying the same age (quote kinda stolen from "Dazed and Confused).

It gets kind of cold up there in North Texas...I would use that paper to start a nice fire.

  2. The secret to happiness in life...don't worry about attendance.  Just like everyone on this board; I go to every game, I give to the scholarship fund and I talk up my school.  I can't do anything more than go to the games and bring a friend.  Unless my school wants to start paying me to solve the problem...it's someone else's problem.

Is it? Both schools still show the 17th on their respective websites. Not sure where the rumor started, but I've heard it.

We had schedule posters handed out at the Spring game with the revised Thursday date....I am hoping for a Saturday game, which would make it very possible I will come to the game, if its Thursday I will probably have to wait until Monday of game week to make a decision.

Since we're slowly whittling away at the off-season with big dreams and high hopes... how about this:  College Gameday at Apogee for FAU at UNT?

They usually pick one or two G5 games a year and if both of us are having an excellent season up to this point it could be an interesting G5 game for them to show up at in November.

    Things working for us:

    • ESPN loves Kiffin
    • Its a major market game
    • ESPN would probably have no problem getting people to show up for festivities even if they aren't UNT/FAU fans
    • Apogee has lots of room for Gameday to setup
    • I think UCF won't have similar performance this season turning over their whole coaching staff.  They will no longer be the G5 darling.

    Things counting against:

    • We may get smoked
    • FAU doesn't travel well
    • UNT has a questionable history filling the stands
    • It may be a Thursday game? (did this get confirmed?)

I hate Thursday night games.   Families with school aged kids often won't be able to attend.   Our daughter and grandson won't be coming.   Fans who live away from the DFW area have a hard time getting there for a weekday game with work the next day.    I hope we are getting a BUNCH of money to move this game.     What I REALLY hope is that this turns out to be one of those things that you hear about that never happens.   That would suit me just fine.

It looks like its happening.  I first found out about it on your board and then yesterday at our spring game they were handing out season schedule posters with the date change.  The previous poster they were handing out at the ticket office had the 17th.  I am kind of bummed, wanted to come up for the game will have to make a decision closer to game day maybe game week.  Oh well, should be a great game but short week prime time game pushes things in your favor a little bit more than a typical home game.  Such is life.  Odd no official announcement on either side.

  6. Ok guys...tell me your thoughts on your spring.  Based on what I read on your comments the offense is tighter and only improved from a year ago.  And your defense improved.  So did you guys close the gap?  Just assuming that FAU doesn't slip or doesn't improve at all and we just stay what we are.  Too early to say if we can repeat our performance from last year but for this question just assume we are the same.

Through six practices the offense has been very effective and fast temple is still the goal.  Weis Jr is calling the plays but of course that can and probably will change when the season starts.  I expect Kiffin to call the plays in the beginning of the season with Weis taking over as the season progresses.  The defensive line has been dominating so far, but the O-line is rebuilding and apparently struggling mightily.  We have a redshirt sophomore guard who has moved up the depth chart and taking snaps with the first teamers.  So that either means he kicking butt and taking names or things are a mess right now!

If you guys have another good year and we hold our end of the bargain up I am planning on flying up to Denton for the game in November.  Should be fun.

...sorry for the long post but FAU Con started this and this topic is too important (btw back in the days when FAU was in the SBC, Troy and FAU recruited the same type of (hs) players...)

I know you are but what am I.  If you were truly sorry you wouldn't have written such a long post defending your shady recruiting practices of the past...but the fact of the matter a conference is best when you have a bunch school with similar academic standards, which Troy does not have.  Not saying FAU is some juggernaut in academia, but a school with no standards such as Troy has a competitive advantage.  I like our current conference partners and any future additions that include Troy is a BIG no for me.  Just my humble opinion which is not helped by your bending of the rules to the point of why have them with your gray shirting of the past.

What do you think of this concept as it appears to be gaining traction in C-USA and Sun Belt BBS.  There would be 5 divisions separated by geography which is inline with what Arkansas State Fan has proposed.

Southeast FIU FAU Georgia State Georgia Southern Troy Coastal Charlotte USA

Texas UTEP NMSU UNT Rice UTSA Texas State Ark State ULM

Heartland ULaLa USM UAB WKU MTSU ODU LA Tech App State

Northeast JMU Liberty Marshall Buffalo UMass Ohio Akron Kent State

Midwest CMU WMU EMU NIU Ball State Toledo BGSU Miami (Ohio)

The steam is someone's imagination.  I believe, for any conference to be successful it can only afford to have one school with ZERO academic standards (you know who I am talking about), so Troy will always be a no vote for me in this fantasy endeavor!

His actions were the same at OU, being suspended for a good while would do some good for his character. Lets be honest, Kiffin doesn't give a shit about character, it's all just a face that is being put on. Only got a year left of this Kiffin bullshit. Preach "fam"

P.S. - nothing against FAU or their fans, this has just become old news coming out of FAU. Shit like this happens and no one should be shocked.

I find it amusing you think we have a dirty program, but that is ok think what you want.  This is a little different than OU he was arrested for public intoxication up there.  They looked the other way when a future Heisman winner was caught doing something similar.  Kid paid the price....he's at FAU not OU.  I don't know how long he will be out, but reading (not just on this board) other boards saying that this is a joke suspension because it won't carry into Fall is silly.   He missed a tutoring session.  Be careful about how clean you think you program is, we are all dealing with 18, 19, 20 and 21 year olds, they tend to make mistakes...as they say youth is wasted on the young.

Regarding Kiffin's tenure, last year he was 1 and done.  So we are already playing with house money.  I am not really concerned when and if Kiffin leaves, most successful coaches do.  But I will say this about Lane, he's really enjoying living on the water in Boca Raton, he's really enjoying being able to go out in public and not being mobbed or being interrupted at his kids birthday at a restaurant unlike a certain city in Alabama.  He doesn't need the attention, 1 tweet and he can be on the home page of ESPN.  If the public knows nothing about Kiff they do know he is an untraditional thinker whereas one might be out of here as soon as possible, he might not be.  He doesn't have to leave for money, he's already cashed in at the Raiders, UT, and USC whereas your coach gets the 2 or 3 million a year offer he has to take it, just the nature of the business.  We all know a love affair with a coach quickly ends with a couple of bad seasons in a row.

    Legit question here.

How are attendance numbers calculated ?  If a person buys a ticket and sits in a seat they should be counted.  If there is a seat that has been paid for but not sat in, how should that be figured in ?  Both were bought and paid for, right ?  The "paid for/not sat in" seat is unavailable for anyone else to sit in.  For all we know the ticket holder got tied up in traffic and will get to the game ASAP.  Maybe late in the game.  What about the person that comes to the game, gets his ticket scanned and leaves ?  And what about people like me that come to the basketball games with 2 tickets in hand but no second person ?  I'm only one person but I want to count as two.

    GO MEAN GREEN

I think you might be analyzing a bit too much.  The institution will use the number that makes them look the best in a box score (which might have no reflection of reality).  My guess would be a combination of tickets distributed and actual attendance, therefore double dipping!

  11. What will ODU do with all those C-USA championship trophies and banners they have accumulated?  How bout dominate the league then consider moving on.  I love how Marshall, USM and now ODU reason that their failures at not competing in C-USA has to do with the league and not them.  The only valid argument would be travel cost.  But it they want to string a bunch of FCS teams together go ahead, i think most FCS are content at where they are at considering the changing collusive environment of FBS.  Silly columnist, but it worked we all clicked on the article.

  12. It was silly for them not to play the game.  The hurricane was suppose to directly hit Coral Gables and go up the east coast.  Fortunately it went west and saved us (South Florida) a lot of devastation.  They had a chance to get 100 kids out of a potential dangerous disaster area and they chose not to.  The best interest of the kids was their safety and I don't care where you hunker down there was no guarantee of safety riding that storm out.  I have been in South Florida for 40 years and this was the first one that had me concerned.  Write the check Miami.

here I’ll put it this way: Let’s imagine my dad is rich. He’s driving around an Audi. When I turn 16 he gifts it to me.

After driving around only a year, I join an Audi-only club that my dad’s friend runs that typically only admits experienced drivers.

That opportunity was available to me.

How can we expect an offensive analyst with 2 years experience to run the entire offense? We’re not. It’s pretty clear Kiffin is running it and Weis is being gifted this opportunity for one reason or another.

Yes this would hold true for you being an awful driver, but if your name was Dale Earnhardt Jr. then it would be an invalid point.

We're not knocking the kid, we're just objectively saying there is zero evidence of his potential as an OC.

He was a TE coach and an analyst for a few years.

Let's not vomit over semantics - his barrier to get to this point was greatly reduced by name and name alone. If I skimmed articles right: Florida QC under his dad, then Kansas team manager under his dad, then Alabama analyst, then Falcons analyst? Typical career paths don't start like that unless you have an in. Heck, look at one of the most storied college football players of the 2000s, who finally got a shot as OC at little ol' North Texas?

Who in their right mind would give someone the offensive reins to a 24 year old only a few years in as an analyst and a stint as TE coach?

A head coach who will actually be calling the shots at a low-risk place. Totally no offense to you or FAU, but let's be real here. He ain't no OC quite yet no matter how smart Kiffin thinks he is.

My point is after he left his dad he has impressed people.  Wouldn't you think coaches who have no connection to SR (Kiffin and Sarkasian) would have resentment towards him if he didn't have some ability?  Maybe Kiffin will be running the whole offense, maybe not, maybe it wil bel a combo, maybe it will implode to the benefit of the entire conference!  I take no offense, I am just more commenting on the point of how upset (not just a few on this board) with nepotism.  The reality is if Kiffin's name is attached it will automatically get a negative reaction in some circles.  Weis Jr took advantage of every opportunity that was available to him, instead of running around the practice fields in New England when he was 7 or 8 he was in the coaches office obviously learning things from his dad.  When at Kansas he was working with the football program 50 60 hours a week and taking a full slate of classes.  The kid is sharp. I trust Kiffin and whatever his plan is.  He has a non-traditional way of doing things.  It drives establishment crazy, I kind of like it.

Not sure how these two guys compare here, but ok.

Just to be clear here, seems like nepotism is ok as long as the person doesn't suck.

Also, to be clear, I am not saying that this guy is bad or anything, but I just thought it was more intellectually honest to admit that he is really only in this position because of who his father is.

I am not sure you know what nepotism is....nepotism = the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives, especially by giving them jobs.

Just cause he has a famous father doesn't mean he doesn't have abilities of his own.   Per my research Kiffin is not related to Weis.  But to end the controversy I will call the football offices and demand his resignation.

One other comment Sr hasn't coached since 2014.  So 3 years going on 4 this kid is making an impression on the football coaching community.  BUT, if I were you I would hope is nepotism and he is grossly under qualified and we suffer the consequences with multiple losses.

And does it fall under nepotism if you were never paid when you "worked" for your father or was it him hanging out with his dad at work learning the trade?

He is graduating with an Engineering degree, and said he has no ideation of playing at the next level, just wants to move on with his life.  His goal was to play football at the FBS level and has succeeding in that goal.  I respect this young man for this decision.  Not easy to walk away from something you have done your entire life....  I wish his all the success....though I doubt he needs my sentiments...

This.  Kid is graduating with a Civil Engineering degree in May.  He's got bigger things happening in his life than playing a 5th year of football.  It has nothing to do with not being able to compete for the job he's always the underdog and he keeps winning the job.  My money would have been on him next season had he stayed.  He was the 3rd string QB this summer.  Great leader we will miss him.
