  1. I am watching the Cedar Park and Frisco Lone Star game on FSN. They interviewed Nate Grimm on the sideline. Apparently he won a state championship as a QB at Cedar Park in 2012. He is currently listed on the roster as a wide receiver. I wonder if he will get any looks at qb by this new staff.

So he can't play QB for his high school team....but you want him to play QB here?

  2. Washington State has these positions:

    Head Coach

    Outside Receivers

    Inside Receivers

    Running backs

    Offensive Line

    Defensive Coordinator / Secondary

    Linebackers

    Inside Linebackers

    Defensive Line

    Special Teams

They also have a host of Quality Control / Director of Footbal Operations / Chief of Staff / Manager of Player Personal / 4 S&C coaches / 4 GA's

The Indiana Hoosiers have the following:

    Head Coach

    Offensive Line

    Quarterbacks & Wide Receivers

    Running Backs

    Tight Ends and Full Backs

    Defensive Coordinator

    Linebackers

    Defensive Line

    Secondary

    Secondary

They also have a host of Quality Control / S&C assistants.

You can have many "off the field" roles like quality control and high school relations of you have the extra cash to pay them. They are technically not allowed to actively coach on the field.....but it's not highly enforced. It all depends on how much money you have in the assistant budget, or if you can get guys to volunteer.

  3. No, it is who designs the plays and creates the offensive game plan that matters.  Hopefully, whoever NT hires can do that; not many HC's call plays.

He runs the offense, he is over the two co-coordinators. They assist with the game plan.

He was also the OC at Indiana and Arizona. I'm sure it's heavily influenced by Leach and Fedora, but it's HIS offense.

Hopefully he wasn't at IU when we beat them...

    He wasn't.

  5. Football scoop disagrees.

North Texas: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting TCU OC Doug Meacham has accepted the North Texas job. We are told that is premature. We reported earlier Monday Meacham is still considering the job, and a UNT source said Monday afternoon no hire has been made.

A whole of getting excited for nothing, so no one knows and everyone wants to say. Sounds about right.

  6. Matt Wells is making $750k at Utah State, but is from this region.

    Quick Notes:
    -Prepped in Oklahoma.
    -Played QB in college.-
-Assisted at Navy under Charlie Weatherbie (http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/coaching/alltime_coach_year_by_year.php?coachid=2456)
-Assisted at Tulsa and Louisville under Steve Kragthorpe (http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/coaching/alltime_coach_year_by_year.php?coachid=2833)
-Assisted at New Mexico under Rocky Long (http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/coaching/alltime_coach_year_by_year.php?coachid=1398)
-Assisted at Utah State under Gary Anderson (http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/coaching/alltime_coach_year_by_year.php?coachid=2848_

That is a pretty solid assembly of mid-major coaches he's worked for.  So, he'd certainly understand the mid-major level recruiting.  Navy, Tulsa, Louisville, New Mexico, and Utah State may not sound sexy.  But, under those coaches, those programs had success or built up to success.

Got no information that says this is the guy.  But, you look at his pay, his background, and vicinity of his familiar roots, and it wouldn't be hard to conclude that this is a guy that maybe you'd target as a head coach who already has experience as a head coach.

I'll guarantee you this:  His first year at Tulsa, 2002, was my last year there.  I assure you, the facilities were worse than we have here, and the morale among both boosters and many of the board was much worse - they were seriously talking up dropping football down to I-AA.

So, he's seen far worse than what he'd step into on Day One here.

I don't understand bringing up names of coaches who are having success at FBS schools. They are already head coaches and winning, they aren't going to leave and risk a losing season or two which would hurt their chances at a P5 job. Money is not the answer to every question. Please stop. Rhule, Fritz or any other head coach having success at the FBS level is not coming here.

  7. Because any of us know anything about that?

We aren't personal friends with Chico. We don't know him. We only know the very little he allows us to see.

What I do know is that his evaluation and development of QBs put this team in a huge hole the last 2 years. Not one FBS QB on the roster after the man responsible has been here for 6 years.

Yet some would still give him the head coaching job today...

    Well, we are UNT fans.

What you see is what he is. There isn't an ounce of phony in that man, he is the most genuine person you will ever meet.

  8. Miami (FL): The Miami Herald reports that UM officials are under the impression that Charlie Strong and Tommy Tuberville could have interest in the Miami job. The paper also reports that there have not been conversations between reps of the school and Alabama offensive line coach Mario Cristobal, despite a report, and Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula will not pursue the job. Additionally, Butch Davis is getting a “fresh look.” When asked about the Miami job last week, Tuberville said, “I’m good” at Cincinnati.

  9. Texas A&M: Kevin Sumlin denied a report that offensive coordinator Jake Spavtial will not return next season, saying on his radio show, per the Houston Chronicle, “I’m not going to talk about where that came from. … There’s nothing factual about that report.”

  10. Nobody hates you, and nobody hates Chico. Just because I don't think Chico is the right person for the job doesn't mean I hate him. Just because I think your posts are kinda suspicious dissent mean I hate you.

Juzt because I don't think RV should be allowed to hang around without producing doesn't mean I hate him.

This is a juvenile game played by  some supporters of RV and Chico. "If you don't want my guy to be here, you have a personal ax to grind."

If you want to argue for your guy, do it using facts, not emotion. Part of the problem is there are hardly any facts to defend RV and really no facts that justify Chico as the next head coach. Hence the "you hate my guy" arguments.

Nothing could be further from the truth. I'm sure Chico is a great guy, I just don't want him to be the next head coach of UNT football.

I was being sarcastic brother, it will be alright.

  11. He'll end up at one of the F_U schools and trounce us and our flashy SEC positions coach from somewhere super Texas related like Kentucky on the regular.

Insert requisite "Only at North Texas" here.

If we hire the next incarnation of Knute Rockne, it'll piss people off because it'll justify the continued employment of our athletic director, and the personal hatred for that is strong here.  "Only at North Texas" do we give an AD enough chances over the course of a decade and a half to stumble into a good decision in spite of himself.

If we hire the next incarnation of Todd Dodge, and we continue to be perpetual denizens of the bottom 10, it'll piss people off.  "Only at North Texas" can we consistently fail so miserably.

If we hire someone who keeps us at .500 ball with a bowl game every three or four years, it'll piss people off because "Only at North Texas" do we accept such mediocrity.

If we start selling out every home game, and have consistent 6 game schedules against OOC opponents that people recognize, and tickets become hard to come by, it'll piss people off.  "Only at North Texas" did we lack the foresight to build a stadium with enough capacity to meet demand.

If the attendance for home games continues to be 10,000 with a strong wink and a nudge, it'll piss people off.  "Only at North Texas" do we ignore the hundreds of thousands of area alumni and fail to market to them.

If it rains, it'll piss people off.  "Only at North Texas" does the cloud ceiling matter.

If the sun shines, it'll piss people off.  "Only at North Texas" do we have to bake in the September games.

In conclusion, no matter what happens, "Only at North Texas" will it stoke the anger and ire of the fan base and university employees alike no matter what happens, controllable or not.

Now I suppose I should get my first cup of coffee and calm the hell down.  "Only at North Texas" would I write such a rant without having sufficient caffeine intake first.

You sir are the true master of this board!! That made my morning.

  12. The point is Chico "really wants to be here" because he has zero shot at getting a head coaching gig at any other FBS and probably FCS school.

Thats what happens when you don't recruit a QB for 6 years and are in charge of one of the worst offenses in college football.

And if you want to believe that DMac prevented Chico from recruiting a QB, answer me this:

Why didn't Chico leave UNT for another coordinator gig? If he lacked so much control at UNT, why wouldn't he go somewhere else?

The answer is no one else would hire him as OC. Again, that's if you believe the Mac conspiracy theory (I do not).

So, ya, Chico wants a head coaching gig and knows this is his only shot. Probably in his lifetime.

    Hence the campaigning.

it's just a coincidence that you start posting when Chico becomes interim head coach and almost every post has to do with Chico for head coach?

    Color me extremely skeptical.

I understand your skepticism, but you don't know me. You want to get to me, I'm around and I would love to really know more people who are proud of being part of the Mean Green because there aren't enough.

I read this board all the time, have for almost a decade now. I never joined or commented because I know all these people you talk about personally and I knew nothing out of my mouth was going to be friendly, eventually someone insults your friends enough, you stick up for them.
