  1. Okay. I'm a Junior at UNT, transferred after my freshman year and I've lurked these boards for almost two years now and I have never had the urge to contribute to any conversation or felt I had anything meaningful to say. With that being said, I've made this account to specifically address this attendance issue that grown men are pissing themselves over.

Here are the reasons students did not show up to this game specifically, but all of them for that matter:

    1. It is not UNT culture to be highly involved in football (or any other sport). It is not advertised around school. The administration, in my opinion, makes no effort to get the regular student involved with sports. Occasionally they will put up small plastic signs at 4 locations on campus on game week. Great. What an advertising lure! ... Not. UNT needs to make football BIG. There is nothing around campus that shouts, "WE LOVE SPORTS! GO MEAN GREEN!" Zero advertisement.

    2. History of losing. Most students see UNT sports as a joke- They don't care. I've had one professor in my 1 and 1/2 years talk about the football team in class. No students cared. Why? Because of losing IN ADDITION with the lack of culture. It's not something for the average student to get excited about because they've been let down for years and don't expect anything. When you don't expect anything, why bother? They don't want to show up to a game to just be let down. Students feel it is embarrassing and are ashamed when the football program has done so bad in recent years. They don't expect anything to change. Even with a new stadium.

When I came here Todd Dodge was at my student orientation, he gave us the sales pitch that UNT will do great this year in football and it's time to turn the program around and it sounds similar to what McCarney has said. Do you think the average student who is only familiar with losing and the lack of football culture and lack of sports knowledge is going to see ANY difference between the same hopeful speech by two different people? No.

Only with this much improved season will students realize "Hey, maybe this is worth checking out now." It takes a season of doing significantly better to gain any recognition and that's what happened this season. Not next season, but the next will UNT be what you ranting immature adults WANT the student fan section to look like.

    3. The HISTORY of UNT football or Lance making any accomplishments is NOT known to the average student. NCAA breaking records, what do you expect them to know about it? Again, I put this on the administration and/or the Athletics Department for NOT making it known. One email. Great. 1. Not everyone checks their email. 2.Emails are easily overlooked, we get so much crap emails from the administration already can you expect us to read through every one? No. Most people see the block of text we received and blow past it. NOT to mention it wasn't even from the Athletics Department or have FOOTBALL anywhere in the title. It was sent by freaking MARKETING in the name. We see marketing, we think it's spam. Maybe try titling the letter: "NCAA RECORDS TO BE BROKEN" with football as the email name. Not marketing@randomname.com Try: MEANGREENFOOTBALL@UNT.COM Maybe that might catch more attention.

    4. WITH all of the mentioned aspects above, it was raining and cold. And most of you raving alumni are foul mouthing the students as you sit in freaking COVERED club level seats and seem to not think the weather is an issue. We found out at the FAU game we are NOT allowed umbrellas. This is a huge issue. As students, we are not going to sit through bad weather and be rained on terribly and be cold when there is no spirit for football and it really doesn't matter if we win or lose anyways because there is no tradition or culture to care. If I could sit there with an umbrella. I would have gone. But nope, because I knew I would have sat there, gotten wet and cold and gotten sick the week before FINALS (education and health come first). This part, I blame on the staff at the stadium. (which this is not the only issue with a stadium staff, I originally wrote a lot more, but decided to drop it.) This game was the first game I missed and I had to listen to it on the radio. I live in the dorms, I was disappointed and mad that I had to miss it. Yes. Had to. As I'm sure every other student who WOULD have gone if it wasn't raining felt. If you were there during the FAU game, which we won, you would have seen the student section was big, then dwindled down as the weather got worse. Weather is a huge factor. We don't live up north, we do not have full weatherproof clothing. The most winter suitable clothes we have is jeans. Jeans get wet. With no overhead protection we are going to get soaked and be uncomfortable and cold and get sick. End of story.

Yes. Panchos were available to be purchased, but this isn't known to students. We weren't told- how should we know? I sure didn't until I saw a picture on Scrappy's Facebook page. And they cost money. We're college students. Do you think we're going to pay for anything? No, lol.

Now I'll be the final word on the matter of attendance and the voice of the students:

"Shut up. Make us *feel more involved and we will care more. We want to care more. We want to be involved with our university. We want that classic university experience and we want it to be first class so don't blame us for being apathetic and disillusioned. Do you think we want that?"

This post has been promoted to an article

The no umbrella rule is common for outdoor stadiums. Nobody wants to sit behind your umbrella and not be able to see and the people sitting under you do not want to be dripped on. Imagine if we allowed umbrellas and it poured for the Houston game....Nobody would be able to see because everyone would have their stupid umbrella up. Also, you can bring your own panchos into the stadium. You are not forced to buy them at the team store. I think if you have this many excuses, you can't really say you're a UNT fan. I've seen PLENTY of marketing on campus for football and McCarney made it to every freshman orientation. Sure, UNT students aren't the most excited bunch for football but that takes time and a winning seasons. Personally, I am really tired of all of these pathetic excuses and complaining. I know many students who toughed it out and went to the game to support their team. Whether you decided to stay home or not is your own issue, not anybody elses or the staff of the stadium for not letting you bring an umbrella that wouldn't really keep you dry from horizontal rain anyways. Good day sir.

  2. Spawled out tailgating is my biggest complaint. Why don't they face the bandstand/stage toward the parking lots (where the people are) instead of uphill (where there aren't many). I think being able to hear the band would help the atmosphere greatly (at least in that area).

At Fouts, we would walk around the Village and there would be 3 or 4 vendors selling MG gear. Now, there's only one. What happened?

They moved into the two teams stores within the stadium. DUH!

  3. What circumstance????

The circumstance that we're on a 3 game home winning streak and playing for a potential .500 bowl eligible season? With no Rangers, Cowboys, Stars, major college game conflicting? A perfect weather evening for late November?

This is an outrage. Any fan that's ok with 17k at our brand new stadium after 3 straight wins should be ashamed. We deserve better from our students and alumni.

Speaking of the students, did you see them filtering starting early in the 3rd? Hell, some of the alumni too left soon after.

You can blame that STUPID wrist band/spirit march promo for third/fourth quarter attendance. They gave away free stuff by gate 4 at the end of the third (shirts, flip flops) for people who participated in the spirit march. WHO DOES A PROMO THAT TAKES THE STUDENT SECTION OUT OF THE GAME!? I think that was the dumbest idea....EVER! So thank you to UNTactivities and Housing or whoever put on that ridiculous promotion. Clearly they weren't thinking. Most students just got their stuff and walked out because they had already left the stands.

  4. If they wanna stay on the hill that's their own business. My only problem is how do they get all their stuff there? Are they allowed to park where only MG Club members do? Do they have help in towing their stuff to the hill? Because I know even big frat guys can't walk couches from greek row.

I attend the games and pay for a ticket and I have to walk all the way from campus. I'd love to be able to tailgate, but sorry, $125 or whatever the MG Club fees are, are just a little too high for that priveledge. Why should greeks get the free ride if they're not even coming in the stadium?

Parking is just ONE benefit of the Mean Green Club. So the fees aren't just for a parking pass. You get one at the $250 level with at least one football season ticket. The donation counts for the whole year and there are benefits for basketball as well as the Olympic sports.

  5. You do realize its up to each individual vendor as to what they offer and if they take cards or not. UNT concessions all take cards and I know sonic makes a carbon copy and charges the next week. Maybe you should take up the cash only issue with Metzlers themselves. As for ATM machines, those are also owned by an outside company and if they say out of service that usually means they are out of cash. They have several around the concourse though so I don't see why it's so hard to walk to another. As for sonic, they don't have grills in the concession stands for them to run a full out sonic drive in. Think about where we are now from where we were at Fouts. There is a larger variety of vendors and stands all around the concourse instead of just 2 or 3 in the stadium.

  6. It is a long way - maybe not a mile but pretty close to it - because there is no direct route. You either walk up hill to N Texas Blvd and then over the highway - and then down the access road to the stadium... or you walk down to Bonnie Brae, under the highway - and then back up hill.

Again, I have a green parking pass and am very lucky in that regard.. but there has to be a better way. When I exit for my parking, I see people with young children or are fans that are a little older and they look wore out. That is a heck of a walk...especially if you are carrying your stuff for tailgating over to the Hill.

I did not mean to start the thread to complain - my real question is about the Denia "compromise" - how stuck are we with that decision? That old Radisson parking lot is just sitting there. It is University property and the athletic dept should have access to it 365 days a year. The police could set up so that people are not able to enter the neighborhood and only turn into the parking lot there. I think that it is made available for RV's on game day but it could be a really great cash lot (and bring in a nice stream of revenue). If someone is willing to pay $20 bucks to park at Sack and Save to walk over, they would easily pay the same amount to park there.

Is it free to park at Fouts? For free parking, I agree - someone can walk. We pay for convenience.

No, no, NO! See you have a parking pass so you have no clue. Once your cross the bridge there is a road that was put through the golf course that keeps you from traveling down the service road. Cuts time and increses safety. Also, the Radisson parking lot is used as a drop off for tailgating items at the hill. You just drop off and then proceed to Fouts.

  7. I watched the game on ESPN3 while listening to George & Hank on kntu.com because I don't live anywhere near Denton. Let's be real... and it's been repeated in this thread: the only thing that will get people in the stands is a winning football program. You can't demand loyalty from students or alumni... you have to earn it. The way you earn people's loyalty in college football is by winning.

Why should we be surprised that there were so many empty seats on a weekend when Texas & O.U. played and the Rangers are in the ALCS (and bad weather to boot)? How can we criticize those who chose not to attend a game featuring Florida Atlantic? Furthermore, why is the athletic department scheduling home games on Texas/O.U. weekend? We can beg everybody to attend through letters and other gimmicks all we want... but why try to fight that tradition head-to-head? It didn't work for the USFL trying to beat the NFL... it's not going to work for North Texas at this stage of the game.

People will start being more than mildly interested once the program starts winning consistently... and last night's win over FAU gives us hope that the winning program is a lot closer than it's been in recent years.

The conference schedule is set by the Sun Belt Conference, not our athletic staff. Since we are home and home with conference opponents, sometimes things just don't work out in our favor. Can't blame our staff for that.

  8. Baylor had over 35K last night for ISU. Yes, the are ranked (25) but they were playing ISU, were coming off a loss, with the same weather/ALCS issues as our fan base. They are also a lot smaller in terms of alumni/student base. If we can't at least draw half of what Baylor draws (regardless of opponent/record) were in bigger trouble than we realize. As said above - it's time to start giving away tickets . . . .holding high school band nights etc

FYI 35k is 10k less than their season average. They are a BIG XII school with a heisman candidate coming off a 1 point loss to the #5 defense in the country. They have a very loyal fan base and that is something we have yet to build. I wouldn't compare UNT to Baylor at this point. We just aren't there yet.

  9. There is no doubt that this is the biggest game we have played since 2004. Stop and think about that for just a second, if we win this one, all we have to do is beat one of ASU, Troy or ULM and we'll go bowling.

Last year we lost to ULL 38-34. I remember that game, because it was very close. This team has turned the corner however, but with the way the team is playing right now, specifically the defense, I think we have a shot. If we can stay positive in the turnover margin, we will win.

Nicholls St. played them pretty close for 3 quarters, and ULL will likely not give us the respect we deserve. I guarantee you the thing going through their players heads is, we've gotten past Troy and FIU, now we have three cupcakes coming up(Us, MTSU, WKU) I am anxiously awaiting this game, and this bye week for the cowboys makes it even more painful.

It was actually 28-27, not 38-34

  10. First of all, the walk from Fouts to Apogee is nowhere near a mile. If you can walk around a mall once, then surely you can make it from Fouts to Apogee with no problem. Signage could be better but the signs at exits are controlled by the city and not by UNT. A shuttle would not work in this case because it would take triple the amount of time waiting to board and get across to Apogee than it would to just walk. Considering how many last minute walkup fans that we have, I don't think that would go over well for those that show up at 5:30 for a 6PM kickoff and expect to make it straight over.

This being said, our fans need to SUCK IT UP! UNT fans have been spoiled for years and I am sure most would still complain even if we played the football game in their own backyard. You should know what to expect when you come to a sports stadium. A high volume of people will make traffic and parking difficult. There aren't many other options at this point and I think the lots and routes have been near perfected. If you think standing in line for an hour to get on a shuttle bus that would probably only fit around 30 people then you must be crazy.

Come early, be prepared, GO MEAN GREEN!
