Sorry RV: "res ipsa loquitur".

Yes, even the RV haters agree on this.
I don't know. Sounds like what he said when he went out and hired Dodge.

finishing 6th and we are excited. wow, just wow
It would be a big improvement over where we have been....and with a young squad.

The latest Sporting News magazine is fairly high on the Mean Green despite our pessimism. They are projecting North Texas to finish 6th overall (ahead of Western Kentucky, Rice, FIU, FAU, UTSA, Marshall, Southern Miss and Charlotte). They seem very high on Combs and J'Mycall Reese. Unfortunately, they went to press before Aniefliok left the team. They also like the upside on Harris, if he can control his emotions.
Interestingly, the point out that it took "Jones six seasons to ramp up the Mean Green" and wonder if Benford will be given that time to build his program.
At least some people think the program is on the upswing.

Up and coming programs need up and coming coaches. Make that a slogan of this board!
So by way of reference, do down and out programs need down and out coaches?

Benford has make significant improvements every year. Many will never forgive him for messing up the most talent assembled by NT in decades, but that is in the past.
I am not advocating that Benford stays if he doesn't have a real good year, but am waiting to see what he puts on the court this year. The front court is really suspect and someone is going to have to come through to take some of the pressure of Combs.
As far as recruiting; I don't like the high turnover style but probably the majority of teams now do the same thing. It is not like football, in basketball; it's pretty much substantially contribute or your gone. In three years, imo he has only hit on a couple of recruits Combs and Voss. Judging by his stated evaluations of his additions, he is not a very good judge of talent at all. Having said that I like his two commits and his freshmen this year. Brice is definitely a project, but he is a big 7' one.
I agree to a point, however some of that "talent" was fatally flawed regardless of who the coach was.

The keep rolling him out because he makes his plays from outside the pocket, gives him the run pass option, less to look at meaning he only has to read 1/3 of the field.
He has thrown about 100 less passes then McNulty and has thrown more TDs
He definitely gives us more of a home run threat. Hopefully they will be working on the passing accuracy and coordination with the receivers.

His transfers in are mostly of the one year variety or not very good (Keith Coleman). He just can't get more than a couple of HS kids on campus and in the games. The entire roster is his and there are zero preseason all conference players.
JJ's last few classes had some serious talent and more of his transfers turned out to be good (or very good-great) players. Think of guys like Wooden, Tramiel, Odufuwa. Jordan was a very good HS recruit along with CJ.
They are not signees (yet), merely verbal commits.
I'm referring to Brice, Brown, Fuller and Holston, who are already here and on the team. The commits are just gravy. Future looking good for the Mean Green.

I wouldn't call him a great recruiter, but will think that the is good if the new signees and Reese turn out as advertised.

Considering our track record of late....I would just as soon go with a blindfold, a dart board and some posted names.

No way is this attributable to Benford. This is self-inflicted.
This can not be. Benford'd

I really want him to focus on two things. Getting the offense working and finding out which of
our young players will be in line to make major contributions next year. Of course, the two may
not be totally compatible goals, but we do need to play the rest of this season with an eye to
rebuilding next year.

I'm happy to hear this. Julius is one of our bright hopes for the future....and goodness knows, we need a few of those.

An excellent commitment. Hope all the rest are of this quality..

Just so we know what kind of company we're looking to keep. Comfortable company in SMU, Houston, FIU, Southern Miss, and Western Ky.
Edit: If you're looking at this on mobile, you can scroll the table to the right for record, points for/against, and Opps record.
We need to find out how those programs came back and do the same

I personally think that this team will be a pleasant surprise. J-Michael Reese is reportedly that good.

Hate to say it, but Hayden Fry was the AD who made the decision to leave the Missouri Valley
and go independent. That gamble did not work out and we ended up dropping to 1AA as a result.
A big miscalculation on Fry's part. We could not get any bowl bids as an Indy despite winning records.

The only point of interest for me is that we are a young team and I want to see how many of the freshmen and sophomores develop this year. Beyond that,
the season is a bust as far as I am concerned.

So we are clearly out of the game at SMU and we don't even put Greer in for a couple of snaps? Is there not anything to be gained by evaluating some other guys?
We know DaMarcus is way down the bench but what about Means? Is this another season like 2013 where we never get another guy snaps so we are up shit creek in 2014? I sure hope not.
Mac is going to ride that horse until it dies, apparently

INSANITY IS DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS

Wish you would tell the coaches about our QB and our offensive play calling.

Maybe, maybe not. Booger Kennedy was not too much heavier as a junior in high school.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if certain SMU boosters pushed them to drop the series. However, Coach Morris seems to see this as a true rivalry so that may play heavily into it.
Aha...."the double secret clause".

Some of the other young ones who didn't make the two-deep and may redshirt still
appear to have at least some native athletic ability. Hopefully, they will come on as
we move into next season.

Should be an interesting year. I am curious to see how the young talent performs and develops.
